I volunteered at W.B Sweeney Elementary School in Willimantic, Connecticut. I was with children in grades kindergarten through fifth for two hours after school every Monday this past semester. I thoroughly enjoyed helping them with homework, doing activities, and just getting to know them individually. I grew as a person from this opportunity, learned more about the field I am planning on entering, and broadened my experience with children overall. The environment of my site for volunteering was in an art classroom where the afterschool program met after the final bell every day. The school was a little run down with chairs and tables cracking, but that did not bother the children one bit. When we arrived, we would sit with the children who were at tables in groups eating their snacks. We were to talk with them and since our day was Monday, we typically discussed how their weekends went with them. After snack, the groups moved from the art room into separate classrooms. Week one I was assigned to a group and got to go with them each week. I grew especially close to these children as I spent the majority of the time with them apart from the rest. This was beneficial because each group had children from each grade so I was able to see the differences between ages in a small setting. Each group also had a paid coordinator, and an Eastern volunteer. In our separate rooms, groups were to complete their homework for that night. The coordinator had a worksheet with the children’s
So far, all throughout high school, I have done my best in school. I strive to get the best grades I can. There are many opportunities out there, college related, that many people out of high school don’t have. I make sure I take advantage of these opportunities because all the hard work will be very rewarding in the end. During my sophomore year of high school, I had the chance to get into a four-year program that would have me take college classes while still in high school. Also, I would be able to job shadow different careers, practice interviewing skills, and get an internship. By the end of this program I would have an associate’s degree and have developed very useful skills necessary for a career. This whole program would be free.
One of my first volunteering positions growing up was at a local elementary school assisting children in core math and reading subjects. Not only did I help the students but I also helped the teacher with grading and developing new assignments. This experience gave me great insight into how one can effectively explain education materials to young children.
Every summer between 7th grade and my freshman year of college, I would volunteer at a local summer program. This consisted of helping the teachers come up with lesson plans, activities, and games to play. During my last two years, I gained more responsibilities as the “Head Leader in Training” and managed the other volunteers, while designating tasks and responsibilities. I continued working with and coming up with activities during undergrad through the organization Project Literacy. After going over the lessons with the students, we would have a group activity or play a variety of sports with them. Working with children
I volunteered at the Atrium Court Apartments as an aid to a Tutor that would come in and help the kids who lived around the apartments with their homework and any other necessary needs. At first, it was difficult for me to balance my work schedule and volunteer schedule but gradually I learned how to manage work, school and volunteering and it felt like an accomplishment. I worked with and helped all the kids with the Mrs. Farrow, who was the Tutor in charge and conducted this after school program. At first it was hard for many kids to accept a stranger who would help them besides Mrs. Farrow but eventually, they were okay with me teaching them. As I started going gradually I started getting to know the kids a little more. Some louder than
I started writing my first real essay in the Eighth grade, and I never knew why I was given such an awful task. I am a terrible English/Writing scholar and I never could comprehend the concept of writing. I put a lot of work and heart into my first essay, but that still didn’t get me the grade that I wanted. Needless to say I got a “D” on the essay. I was extremely disappointed in the grade I made and I wanted to reject writing all together, but that is not the kind of scholar I am, so I began my journey during my Eighth grade year to become a better writer. I had many academic goals that year, but my main goal was to excel on the English state writing test at the end of the year. The test would determine if I moved on to ninth grade English or if I would get placed in a pre-high school English program. To achieve my goals I knew that I was going to have to work hard not only on developing the papers I write, but also making sure they are grammatically correct, interesting, and that each story or essay gets the main point across as well.
I have had previous volunteering experiences throughout my life but what was special about volunteering at the cultural center was that I primarily spent most of my time with children. It was truly a different experience and was extremely fulfilling because whether it was during reading/story time or during a dance or musical lesson, I was always engaged with the children and there was a lot of active communication and learning. Not only did the children learn about the
Some students who were in second grade would ask to volunteer because they wanted to do what we were doing. There is nothing that feels better than knowing that you are a role model for young kids and your community. I felt as if I was shaping those kids’ future by showing them that making a difference in your community is a good thing. Another great encounter I had was getting to see middle school students teach adults how to use gardening tools. This program also won a state award. Just getting to be a part of that is an amazing thing. Even though I did my hours over summer, I still continue to volunteer. I also landed a job with PLAY as their intern. I love my job and the experience is
Some of the kids spend a little more time with different leaders because their parents also volunteer. There are some weekends that are harder than others to want to volunteer because it’s been an exhausting weekend or just been crazy. What I have found out by volunteering is that the kids that I have now, have had in the past remember that time you spent with them. It makes my heart melt every time I walk in my room or just walking through the church lobby and you hear your name being called by a child and them running up to you giving you a hug. It’s not only the kids that I see every weekend, it’s also all the leaders I volunteer with, they are some of the most caring, loving not only parents but friends that I have come to know. This experience has changed my life and wouldn’t want it any other
High school ended, as well as summer. I was on the plane ride back from vacation to start college. I was in the tight and rigid economy section, while my sister, my father’s only princess, was enjoying herself in the luxury of business class. But that wasn’t the issue. I can’t say that I was fueled with excitement starting this new chapter in my life. I mean why would I be, I was on the honor role all of high school, took Ap’s, captain of all sports, manager, president of the student athletic council, I was even an assistant to the principle for large school events, and yet I couldn’t get into the school that I was most interested in, the Grove School of Engineering.
I've done a lot of volunteering work at my school working with the teachers’ kids . Looking after them
To begin I volunteer at the boys and girls club in Santa Ana, for one of my field work classes of human serivrs. Im there on Mondays and Wednesdays from three thirty to six thirty. I help them with everything, from homework, to lecturing them at times, monorting them, and making sure they’re on task of what they are suppose to be doing during class time. The children I volunteer with are from first grade to six grade so from five to ten year olds. Ive been doing this for about three months now and its crazy but fun at the same times yet the stuff you’ll experience here is surprising.
The purpose of me volunteering was to share my knowledge, better the community, and to help the school that is giving me this opportunity. I assisted Coach Reyes, my supervisor, at the Seco Mines Elementary School, in Eagle Pass, Texas, by teaching students the
I have volunteered and worked with children throughout my highschool career. It started with volunteering for a few weeks at the Vero Beach Museum of Art at their children’s art camps. I enjoyed working with the children and helping them with different art projects. My favorite group was the princess themed class. There was lots of glitter, tiaras and pink. I loved connecting with the children and being a role model to them. I also volunteered at Vero Beach Elementary as a reading mentor for a semester. I was paired up with a young boy who I met with once a week for about an hour and helped him with English and reading. I loved helping him one on one because I feel like it made an impact on him and helped him succeed in school.
You walk in scanning the badge I gave you the night before you go up the stairs and look no one sees you . walking up to the room I told you about you go in and lock the door , in the middle of the room you see an abandon desk. in the corner is filing cabinet and there a door on the left side
High school is supposed to be the place where you have fun and a time in your life you’re supposed to enjoy. Movies often trick you into believing that high school is an amazing time in your life and there is nothing but parties and fun. In Bring it on, they portrayed the fun and exciting part of high school cheer-leading, however they intentionally leave out the tough times high school students’ face in school and in their practices. In other popular movies, such as High School Musical the students have no pressures other than the next basketball game. In reality, this doesn 't happen. The constant pressure is affected by the grade level you are in. In high school, students can be classified based on the pressures that are faced in each grade level into the categories of freshman, sophomores/juniors, and seniors. I am here to help you make your high school experience less stressful.
