What the Word PLAY Means to Me.
Senior year has been great so far. I got my first job as a paid intern for the City of Sacramento’s Parks Department, I earned straight A’s my first semester, received a new phone, and turned 18. All of this is great but it doesn’t compare to what I learned and experienced during my senior project. I felt as though I learned so much but there is always something more I could do and learn.
The programs that I did my senior project with were Angelique Ashby’s Parks Leadership Academy for Youth (PLAY) and Youth Action Corps (YAC). A typical day for volunteers in PLAY would be a park clean up which consisted of raking playgrounds, picking up garbage, pruning trees/bushes, and pulling weeds. The activities that I participated in during YAC events consisted of marching in parades, running big festivals, participating in Santa in Natomas, and so much more. YAC events were always different so, there really wasn’t a typical day. The steps that I took to plan were to sign up for as many events as I could to get my required 30 hours done. I put every event on my calendar to make sure that nothing would interfere with those events.

Some students who were in second grade would ask to volunteer because they wanted to do what we were doing. There is nothing that feels better than knowing that you are a role model for young kids and your community. I felt as if I was shaping those kids’ future by showing them that making a difference in your community is a good thing. Another great encounter I had was getting to see middle school students teach adults how to use gardening tools. This program also won a state award. Just getting to be a part of that is an amazing thing. Even though I did my hours over summer, I still continue to volunteer. I also landed a job with PLAY as their intern. I love my job and the experience is
I volunteered at the Gonzales City volleyball clinic where I assisted the head coach by helping the young volleyball players learn how to set, serve, hit, and bump. I did this three times a week for three hours each day. The clinic consisted of children from ages 7-14 and each age group went in at different times. Also, I did community service at my local St. Theodore Church by helping in the jumping house at the church carnival. For the past four seasons I helped fundraise at the high school football games by selling food at the stadium snack bar. In every home football game I would stay for more than half of the game in the snack
One of my first volunteering positions growing up was at a local elementary school assisting children in core math and reading subjects. Not only did I help the students but I also helped the teacher with grading and developing new assignments. This experience gave me great insight into how one can effectively explain education materials to young children.
Volunteering and participating in service projects are two of the most rewarding activities in my opinion. Some people may find it was a hassle or only do it because they have to meet the minimum requirement for school or work. Helping others, for me, has always been somewhat second nature to me. Over many years of volunteering I believe I have developed qualities that will stick with me for life and benefit me in my career. As early as freshman year, in high school, I found myself looking for ways to give back. I started by looking for opportunities within school, where I came across the A+ tutoring program, and so my journey of giving back began. While tutoring, my patience for others really evolved, partly by choice and partly because
I volunteered taking care of children, at a recreation center, where parents couldn’t afford expensive day care. I spent time at feral cat clinics to help reduce the overpopulation of cats. I began volunteering at three square and placing applications to help hospitals and soon plan to spend time with soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Through my community service I learned to communicate better, take on leadership roles and earned life changing opportunities along the way. Through volunteering I grew as a person, I matured, learned responsibility, and realized what I wanted to do with my life.
For my community service, I have been going to Lyndon B. Johnson Head Start Program, or LBJ. At LBJ, it is my responsibility to look after children and clean up after them. The teachers there set up many activities for the kids to work on, most of the time they finger paint. The teachers also set up small field trips. For example, we once went on a field trip to a house that had set up a pumpkin patch and many other activities for the kids. The house we went to wasn’t very far from LBJ. The children had so much fun choosing a pumpkin and playing different games, and I had fun helping them and taking care of them.
I am very involved in volunteer work because working to make a better world is very dear to my heart. I was the Senior Class Representative of my high school service club and my job was to organize a lot of events. I was heavily involved in the committee for our Mini Dance Blue Marathon, and loved dancing the night away for the kids. I loved working with kids and helping to shape them so I have volunteered at day camps such as Winshape Camp Foundation and Camp Can-I-Go for a few years.
My two main volunteer experiences consist of: Outdoor School, and volunteering for Homework Club at Gordon Russell Middle School. I have only been able to go to Outdoor School twice, but both times were filled with accomplishments. I worked on plants field study, so learning all the information, which seemed overwhelming at first, and then being
My senior year has gone by so unbelievably quickly. It had been only four years ago when I first stood in front of the school a mere freshman. Throughout the years I gained a new experience that either made me a more global citizen or better prepared as an academic student. This year has been no exception and I feel ready enough for what’s ahead.
Since the summer of eighth grade I have volunteered at Essentia Health Hospital making tie blankets for inpatients. These patients are able to take the blankets home with them when they are well enough to leave the hospital. Moreover, I volunteer at my local church for a once-a-month food share. I help unload the food from the truck, sort out the rotten produce, and distribute the food among the shareholders. Additionally, I clean up highways and trails as a part of Green Club ,and I partake in numerous other volunteer opportunities within my school
This was a great experience I had and would love to do again in the community. I love working with kids and making their day. It’s always a great feeling knowing you helped a kid become better as a student or even as a person. I wished I had done this earlier because I had such a great time with my
My most recent community involvement activity was being a volunteer baseball coach. As a coach, I was responsible for running drills in practice, holding practices when no other coaches were available, and keeping the score book during games. Being able to share my live of baseball has always been a passion of mine, and it was the most gratifying part of being a coach. I loved being able to help others love baseball as much as I do, all while improving their skills.
Since the 8th grade, I had been an avid volunteer at Children's Museum,. I worked as a camp assistant and hosted hands-on activities like tie-dying, launching mini rockets and building boats, accumulating over 300 hours of community service there. During my junior year, Children's Museum restructured their entire volunteer program.
The first event I ever volunteered with through the Youth Council was The St. Jude’s Ranch Prom. It was a very worthwhile volunteer experience. Every child had a different story, a different background, and a different circumstance. For one night they were able to focus on something else; it was something they had been looking forward to. Most everyone wants to have that ‘Prom’ experience. It’s something people don’t easily forget. We knew that some of the children there would be unable to participate in such an event because of their situation. Fortunately the Youth Council was able to bring the Prom to them. I was able to meet many of the kids participating and it was a very rewarding encounter. They were elated that someone was doing so much to make them happy. It was evident how much work had been put into organizing the event. Every child from St.Jude’s Ranch was able to pick out a gown and suit to wear. The children were ecstatic. I helped them to set up all the clothes that was donated simply for that event and volunteered the day of the
From this experience volunteering I will hopefully be able to continue tutoring or helping students who are struggling in school. I am going to remember this experience when I am a teacher and be able to pay more attention to the students who are struggling and try my hardest to make sure that no one falls too far behind. I will also make sure that all my students get the help that they need in order to succeed. Overall this experience has taught me a lot and enlightened me with new perspectives from where people come from and their home
I personally loved my senior year of high school. However, I can see the pros and the cons in it. The pros of completing a senior year in high school could vary from person to person but things such as becoming mature. Many 16, 17 year old boys don’t know how to wash clothes, cook for themselves, etc. I’m not saying that an 18 year old boy does but they are more mature. A senior year in high school could help them learn what they want to do in their career. I had no idea what I wanted to be until my senior year during a Biology class. There are so many plusses to senior year. You have seniority, prom, and homecoming. On the other hand I would have loved to get a head start. If you’re ready that’s great. I think that if a student wants to graduate
