The Great Gatsby Movie Review I watched the film The Great Gatsby, in order to deepen my understanding of the social life during the 1920’s. The Great Gatsby was produced in 1974 and starred Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Bruce Dern, Sam Waterston, Karen Black, Scott Wilson and Lois Chiles. The story is told from Nick Carraway’s, played by Robert Redford, perspective. Carraway is a midwesterner who has just moved to Long Island, so he can learn about bond business. He goes to have dinner with his cousin Daisy, played by Mia Farrow, and her husband Tom, played by Bruce Dern. Daisy seems to never have a care in the world and Tom is undoubtedly selfish from the time he is introduced. While at dinner, Nick also meets Daisy’s friend, Jordan, played by Lois Chiles. Jordan is pretty independent for a woman at this time. During dinner, Tom goes to answer a …show more content…
The wealthier characters are never seen working, while the lower class citizens are always working but make significantly less money. The movie also has a high emphasis on the flapper lifestyle where women drank, smoked, and had short dresses and hair. Jordan is also noted to be a professional golfer, showing that women were gaining some independence and status with their new ability to vote. Before the 1920’s, there was not enough leisure time for many people to enjoy sports like Jordan does. This film opened my eyes to the type of extravagance the big business owners experienced. The whole film, the upper class characters act like they don’t have a care in the world. The magnitude of the parties Gatsby threw were ridiculous considering he was only doing it in hopes of having Daisy find him. It also showed the obsession with material possession to have a higher social status. This film really helped me understand the social aspects of the
F. Scott Fitzgerald created a modern masterpiece in his work The Great Gatsby, despite the novel's earl ill reception. The work is a complex piece which tries to make sense of a strange concept of modernity within a classical sense of history. In the work, Fitzgerald illustrates the importance of allusion in the creation of character building, but also as a way for Fitzgerald to stray away from previous literary techniques and create motifs and themes that were entirely his own creations.
Bridge: This is a truth that is found in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, novel full of unlikable characters, two of which are unhappily married women having affairs. The Great Gatsby is about a guy named James Gatsby. He buys a house in front of a woman named Daisy. He throws parties hopping she will come over but never does. It's a person named Nick that helps him out with Diarys. Daisy and Gatsby have history together, way back even before Daisy meet Tom. Gatsby does everything in his power to win back Daisy.

The Great Gatsby was written during the 1920s, which is also known as the Roaring Twenties. In the narrative F. Scott Fitzgerald gave a critical view of this time. In the 1920s and the 1930s there was a lot going on, for example bootlegging, drinking, criminal activity, and an evolution of jazz music. The women were also going through an evolution, in 1920 they got the right to vote and since then they changed a lot and they became known as Flappers. Women not only wanted to take care of their families but also wanted to have a career. “The independent New Woman, who rejected marriage for career and political action who often rooted her emotional life […] was gradually discredited. In her place came the flapper, who celebrated her sexual independence
The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald and Passing by Nella Larsen are two significant historical novels that highlight the problems of the nineteen-twenties. These two stories, written within a decade, contrast each other deeply as The Great Gatsby investigates the deep socio-economic tensions of the early twentieth century whereas Passing investigates the deep racial tensions throughout the beginning of the twentieth century. An aspect intrinsic to both books is how these tensions relate to and hinder the American Dream, the idea that every American has an equal opportunity to achieve success through hard work and determination. Both novels present characters that
Fitzgerald expresses his social commentary in The Great Gatsby by revealing the true form of people. His charisma in the writing of The Great Gatsby gave him the ability to capture the mood of the nineteen twenties in a socially and politically vital and muddled time of American history. Through the characters in the book, he was not only able to capture an image of the upper and middle-class in the nineteen twenties, but he was also able to exemplify a series of contempt as well. Fitzgerald also made it a point in his book to show how people like Tom, Daisy and Jordan are at the “top of the totem pole” and how they liked to keep it that way. Fitzgerald also shows examples of people like Gatsby who work hard to get to the top, but are never accepted because they weren’t born into that social class.

In F. Scott Fitzgerald 's novel, The Great Gatsby, all of the characters attempt to achieve a state of happiness in their lives. The main characters are split up into two groups: the rich upper class and the poorer lower class, which struggles to achieve a better, happier life. Although the major characters only seem to look to make their lives even better, the ideal and reality of the American Dream is almost completely destroyed by the harsh reality of life, leaving them with pretty much no hope in improving their lives and making them feel hopeless.

Koko had been in our lives for so long, it was hard to even accept her passing. It seems like forever ago that I came home from a friend 's house to find that little brown and white puppy on the couch, when in reality it was nearly 13 years ago. I fell in love at first sight, her petite brown body was adorned with white patches on her paws, chest, and a single stripe running up her snout. We had visited her mother and the rest of the puppies weeks before, but I was completely clueless to the fact that my mother was going to bring one home, clueless to the fact that in a short few weeks I would have something I 'd dreamed of for all of my then 6 years: a puppy to call my own.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is by far one of the most interesting yet congested books I have ever read. I feel as if the story is shifting as soon as I was able to tell what was happening. One idea that was constant was the themes, symbols and motifs used throughout. Love and the seduction of money, to me, were the most influential themes that I noticed in the book.
