Grendel, by John Gardner published in 1971, takes a different view of the original novel, Beowulf. The plot of Grendel is analogous to the Shakespearean play, Macbeth in numerous ways. Macbeth is a familiar play that originated during the 1600's which incorporated aspects of sorcery, witches and violence. In the beginning, Macbeth is a honoured warrior in Scotland, but lust after for power; hence, he kills the king. There were three witches who provided him with prophecies of the future. The two prophecies were that "Macbeth shall never vanquish'd be until Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane hill" and "for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth." For instance, a thane called Macduff was born from the caesarean section of a woman, so an abnormal birth. Also, the soldiers disguised themselves with bushes and trees which made it seem like the forest was moving. Both of these prophecies were ambiguous and created false hope for Macbeth. Likewise, Grendel's mother states "Warovvish" which means to be aware of the fish (Gardner 145). This is an example of foreshadowing and reminds Grendel to be cautious, but due to his impertinence, he goes to the mead-hall. Next, he battles Beowulf and comes to a conclusion that it was an "Accident."(Gardener 171) Beowulf cuts his arm off, but Grendel thought he was unbeatable; hence, he was negatively influenced by the dragon. Both Macbeth and Grendel display their egotistic nature which leads to their downfall. Moving on, both of these characters demonstrate the theme of isolation. Macbeth was respected and loved by his kingdom, but goes from a state of lightness to darkness. During the time, the Great chain of being was in role; this was the natural balance and order in a society.
