Guantanamo Bay has been a location for torture and inhumane methods, for the past 10 years. No one should be thrown into a detention center and undergo a series of torture methods without being given a trial. Everyone who is arrested deserves a trial to prove their innocence. As we say in America, “You are innocent until proven guilty.” The unlawful treatment of detainees has gone too far, and as promised, Barack Obama needs to put an end to the United States occupance in Cuba as well as putting an end to the torture of many of the detainees at Guantanamo Bay.

On December 17, 2014, President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced the restoration of full diplomatic ties following a swap of a U.S. intelligence officer who had been held in Havana for the three remaining Cuban Five prisoners. On May 29, 2015, The U.S. State Department removes Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. Soon after, The United States and Cuba reopen embassies in each other's capitals. Both had been closed since 1961. These actions taken by the United States, help build the relationship between the two countries. The only problem left, aside from Guantanamo Bay, is The U.S. trade embargo against Cuba. Sadly the embargo cannot be lifted without congressional approval and with a majority of conservative Republicans in congress, this will be very difficult for Obama to achieve.
On June 12, 2008, The U.S. Supreme Court rules 5-4 that detainees have a constitutional right to challenge their detentions. This was a huge step forward for the detainees, in order to challenge the abusive authority that put them …show more content…

The occupation of Guantanamo bay dates back to 1903, when President Theodore Roosevelt signed an agreement with Cuba, to lease the land. The lease satisfied the Platt Amendment; this amendment stated a naval base at "certain specific points agreed upon by the President of the United States" was needed to "enable the United States to maintain the independence of Cuba.” Guantanamo Bay is currently used to hold some of the world most dangerous men that are still alive. There has been over 700 detainees in Guantanamo Bay since it opened. Many detainees at Guantanamo Bay underwent many human rights violations. Such as waterboarding, sleep deprivation, sexual humiliation and much more. Under Article 5 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights; No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. It’s such a shame to see what is being done to these innocent people. The United States has to make the right decision and close Guantanamo
