Gun ownership is embedded in the fabric of America. The United States has the highest gun ownership rate in the world with 88 guns per 100 people. This is a staggering amount of firearms in the U.S. which our forefathers would 've never imagined when writing the 2nd Amendment. The 2nd Amendment states that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Not everyone interprets this right the same way. We live in very violent times. There are daily accounts reported in the media about shootings. We do well to ask, Is there a solution to this growing crisis? Yes! It is call gun control. The lack of stricter gun control has damaged our communities. How so? Well, in order to answer that question, first we have to understand what makes up a community. Then we will explore the history of our gun control laws.

I’m sure that you have heard all the ramble about “assault weapons” (these weapons are actually called AR-15s) and how they should be banned from use of the public. Well I disagree; there’s much for politicians to learn about these weapons, which is one of the biggest problems. These weapons are actually not dangerous tools for murderers and psychopaths, as they are made out to be. They are sporting and hunting rifles that can be outfitted for a variety of jobs for the public. The United States of America is a nation of massacres by military-type assault weapons. Aware of the deadliness of these weapons and due to public safety concerns clearly outweighing the benefits of personal ownership of military-type assault weapons, the United States passed the 1994 Federal Ban on military-type assault weapons. This ban was notably effective during the 10 years it was in effect. However, the Ban automatically expired in 2004. Since that time, the number of U. S. mass murders has markedly increased. Attempts to reinstate the Ban, most recently the stricter 2013 Ban, have all failed. Nevertheless, the less restrictive 1994 Ban did pass the Senate and House of Representatives at one point and was successful. Therefore, the 1994 Federal Ban on military-type assault weapons should be reinstated.

People all across the world are debating about whether to require the start of reducing gun violence. Guns have always been a part of American culture, even before we became the America we know today. In colonial times and the days of the Wild West, guns were an essential part of survival. They were needed to kill animals for food and to protect against unwanted trespassers and predators. However, in these modern times, because we have conveniences such as Hannaford and organized police systems, guns have gone from tools of necessity to novelty toys. November the 5th, 2017 Devin Patrick Kelley shot up a Baptist Church in the small town of Sutherland Springs, killing 26 people. Amongst these murders was the pastor's daughter, who was only 14 years old. Another being a 8 month baby. Nobody in the church stood a chance against the countless firearms being held against them that sunday morning. Gun violence is nothing knew to this world. Every year people lose their lives to gun violence, majority if the time being a deliberate attack. When are we as a state, or as a country going to rid ourselves of the machines that have claimed millions of lives. When are we going to put down are foot and say “enough is enough?” Will it be the next time someone decides to shoot up an elementary school, slaughtering the lives of children? Or will it be when you come face to face with gun violence yourself. It is time that we take action to control gun violence.

School shootings, gang violence, drive by shootings, murder, and thousands of acts of violence are committed every day. Members of our society criticize their own people for this violence while they continue to sit back and do nothing about it. These acts of violence have many contributing factors. Violence in our country today is escalating because we don't control the distribution of the guns sold. There are not enough restrictions on guns sold legally. The illegal purchase of guns through the black market is out of control. There is not enough education on the usage and storage of guns.

Guns have been is society for centuries. They have been used for hunting, war, and even safety. However, in the past several years they have begun to take the lives of many innocent victims, often young children. In response to the killings in Newtown, Conn., it has been noted, “If this were a country, the number of children killed by gun violence would violate international law.” (Browne-Marshall) F.B.I. data shows in 2011, 1,668 African American children were killed due to guns. Day by day gun violence is rising and it is not only in ghetto neighborhoods.

Most do not realize this but, over 62% of the deaths that occur are suicides, and just over 1,642 people killed by gun violence were accidental. In order to have a peaceful community, and for everyone in society to feel safe again, we need more restriction on guns such as who handles guns, when they are handling a gun, and what they are needing the gun for. Violence is a part of history, that has always been talked about. We don’t need violence anymore, and not having restrictions on guns, is just making the violence worse. We need to know the problems that guns have caused in the past, and today, and the real reason why people who are against gun control.

A common controversial topic that is discussed universally is the issue of shootings and gun use. Citizens views on the topic range from the wishes to completely ban guns, to the total allowance and ownership of such items. In comparison, some drugs may be illegal, although people still possess them. Would the same be for guns? Should more be done to implement the control over guns? Or should more freedom be given to gun owners? One can visualize the positives and negatives regarding gun control by learning more about the following: the suspected terrorists list, the black market, increase in gun crime, rarely using guns for self-defense and how extensive background checks would prohibit unqualified people from obtaining firearms.
