Gun violence in schools is becoming more common and out of control. The Freeman High School shooting was a total tragedy. Caleb Sharpe was a ongoing bully victim. I believe everything could have been prevented if he was assisted properly by the school. I feel like the school didn’t help Caleb at all. In the article it says that Sharpe’s classmates alerted the counselors, but it wasn’t clear what the school staff did in response. Classmates reported troubling signs from Caleb, saying they knew videos he posted online playing with guns. Evidence like that is clearly a cry for help. Freeman High School consist of 300 students compared to other schools who have 800+. The school have no excuses why they couldn't catch the warning signs earlier.
Imagine a world where school shootings did not exist. Parents could send their children to school without having to worry about them being shot. In 2013, thirty school shootings took place in the United States. The most devastating school shooting in U.S. history was the Bath School shooting. On May 18, 1927, Andrew Kehoe entered the Bath Elementary School killing thirty-eight people and injuring fifty-eight. Kehoe then returned to his truck, and committed suicide by using explosives. School teachers would have a better chance, in high risk situations if they carried guns.
The problem with society, is that people tend to wait for the problem to occur before making a change. Troubled children and teens have always existed but unfortunately now we’ve entered into an era where shootings are no longer just seen in action movies, it has now become a reality in our schools. Why do these children end up killing their classmates and why the number of school shootings in America have increased in the past several years? These articles try to give some kind of explanation into why these tragic accidents occur. As well as preventions that teachers, parents, and the community as a whole can partake in. This paper will focus on these two main ideas or themes.
Numerous studies have been conducted to determine if teachers should be in possession of a firearm while on school properties and if this will decrease the number and magnitude of school shootings. Many scholars believe equipping teachers with firearms will be costly and end up unnecessarily endangering more students, but many scholars claim that a teacher should be the last line of defense against a school shooter. The question this paper hopes to answer is how can equipping teachers who teach grades K-12 help to prevent school shootings in the United States. This paper will attempt to answer that question by examining the perspectives of school administration and law enforcement, the impact on student’s safety and education, the
Allowing teachers to carry guns will allow teachers to prevent school shootings on the grounds of preschool through college campuses. Everyone has their own opinion about teachers being able to carry guns including other teachers, parents, and government officials. Depending on what state the teacher is teaching in determines if they can carry their gun now, if they are in the process of being able to, or if their state is not passing a law to allow them to carry their gun while at school. Teachers would not stand out like police officers or security officers would while in the school which would allow for other teachers and all of the students to have normal days if schools did not have officers before. Research shows that allowing some teachers to carry guns in their school promotes school safety, protects the teachers and students, and promotes gun safety while still teaching their students.
More than 270 gun sightings have been reported in schools in the year of 2016 (Mascia). Overall, more than fifty million kids walk into school with firearms everyday, but nobody knows about it. Why? Because most school officials do not have enough rights to search through students’ belongings if they have suspicion about something. Schools should have the right to search students’ belongings because of behavior, ownership, and safety.
It is a somber event for those who read the newspaper when they see the risks that the children in this continent are subject to. Mothers and fathers become worried when they send their offspring to school, not certain when or if they will return. Lives are ended early and without reason, when these helpless infants are helplessly caught in a horrific situation.
Campuses across the United States continue to grow vulnerable every day. Since the Columbine Shooting in 1999, the nation has witnessed over two hundred and fifty shootings that were committed on a school campuses (Pearle, 2016). These shootings have been committed on school grounds, starting at the elementary level all the way through post graduate school. With the rise of social media and the internet; campus shootings have grained more attention nationally. In October 1990 Congress implemented the Gun Free School Zone Act (GFSZA); for public federally funded schools to create a barrier around designated school zones, to prevent gun related violence. The GFSZA designates a predetermined distance of 1,000 feet from school’s grounds as a gun free zone. This keeps a law-abiding citizen defenseless when entering a campus premises and allowing any potential criminal a safe-haven to commit a crime. Law abiding citizens should be allowed to concealed carry on school campuses because not only is it a Constitutional right, but it also
The gun that killed 17 kids at lest. There are protests planned, and nationwide school walkouts many more to come unless you do something. Seventeen deaths can make such a difference in school nationwide. Congress is telling people we couldn’t of done anything better to be prepared for this incident. Emma Gonzales a former student of Stoneman Douglas High School. “ Said, no law can prevent gun violence”. Also in the video she had with CNN she asked Dana Loesch “do you believe it should be harder to obtain semi-automatic weapons”. The whole time Dana was going around, and around she never answered Emma Gonzalez question. Until Sheriff Scott Israel, stood up said what Dana couldn’t say. He answered her question. “That Teens/Adults should be on
In 2015, a school shooting in Franklin, North Carolina occurred. At South Macon Elementary School, two suspects, Adam Conley and Kathryn Jeter, had told the sheriff and other investigators, “it was God’s will to shoot children and teachers”. Unfortunately, the sheriff had found the stray cat that all the students loved, dead from a gunshot wound. One of the suspects had told the sheriff, “the cat was defective”. Thankfully, no other injuries were sustained during the shooting. Attacks like this happen an average of every week throughout the United States. However, by arming teachers and having guns used for protection in schools, these occurrences would be fewer. It is less likely to happen, if the attacker knows someone on the other side is ready to fire back.
Schools across the nation have hired a police officer to patrol the buildings throughout the school. With an officer patrolling a school’s campus all day, fewer acts of gun violence would occur. The students would feel much safer if there was an officer patrolling the campus all day long. Also when an act of violence occurs on a campus, the officer patrolling would be able to react quickly and hopefully stop the violence. An officer at a school can do a lot more than protect the members throughout the school though. Schools will hire officers that have first aid training. Officers could respond to an emergency before any medical help can arrive. However, school officers might use extreme force on a student, and people think that is unnecessary.
What are the psychological effects on adolescents that have been exposed to gun violence on school grounds? Introduction In this project I will be talking about the psychological effects on adolescents that have been exposed to gun violence on school grounds. I will be defining key words before moving on to talk about the possible effects of being exposed to gun violence. In the main part of my project I will be discussing three case studies on different school shootings and exploring the psychological effects.
No doubt that there has been many alarming issues since the last century especially when it comes to homicide rate due to gun violence. Research done has proven and illustrated to audience on how adolescents are more likely involved with delinquency relating to gun violence. Gun violence are proon to cause mental health and child development issues, high numbers of homicide yearly, social, psychological, and political concerns. Nevertheless, taking little to no action will only rise bigger issue concerning adolescents and the way they grow up in the community. That why some researchers in articles talk about ways and recommendations on how to prevent gun violence to decrease the number of homicide and delinquency seen in adolescents. I believe gun violence is at its highest stake in adolescents and that government should be
How many more innocent children need to die before we wake up and prepare our teachers to fight back? The amount of school violence is on the rise as demonstrated in the five school shootings which all occurred within one week in 2008. Clearly, school violence levels will not decline if the current laws are left unchanged. The only solution is self-responsibility: arm school officials and give them a fighting chance. No gunman is going to target a school that can defend itself and fight back.
Another big thing people don’t realize is that whether or not there is a law saying you can carry a gun or not, people do it anyways. The number one reason campus’ are trying to get guns banned is because people feel very uncomfortable knowing there are guns around them. With conceal and carry you must have a gun in a case or hidden on you (not visibly showing), which is why many people do it anyway. Since it is not noticeably visible to people around them, no one even knows they have a gun on them. Also, just because someone has a gun on them doesn’t mean that they are going to be using it. Many people just carry a gun on them incase a “what if” situation were to happen, even if it does never come. One of the other big misconceptions about
each day, they had no doubts as to their safety. Today, it can be a
