In the state of California, an issue has formed regarding who should and shouldn’t be allowed to carry firearms on school grounds. For twenty years, it has been considered illegal to possess a firearm within 1000 feet of an elementary school, secondary school, or on the grounds of a college, trade school or university. The Gun Free Zone Act supports this measure, however, it exempts persons possessing a permit to carry concealed weapons. In this case, retired police officers. The Times Editorial Board believes that during a time where school shootings are an issue, this exemption should be addressed and reviewed, and although Sen. Lois Wolk has proposed a bill, it doesn’t do the job. The Time Editorial Board revealed that Sen. Wolk’s bill
Imagine a world where school shootings did not exist. Parents could send their children to school without having to worry about them being shot. In 2013, thirty school shootings took place in the United States. The most devastating school shooting in U.S. history was the Bath School shooting. On May 18, 1927, Andrew Kehoe entered the Bath Elementary School killing thirty-eight people and injuring fifty-eight. Kehoe then returned to his truck, and committed suicide by using explosives. School teachers would have a better chance, in high risk situations if they carried guns.
There have been many pieces of legislation on the state level and on the congressional level regarding guns on school property. A very polarized piece of legislation was introduced in the Nevada Senate. Nevada Senate Bill 286 was created in response to several violent acts involving school shootings (Taylor, 2008). The bill would have given teachers the right to possess and carry guns on school property regardless if the school is a gun-free zone as long as the teacher possessed proper permits the bill specifically required the teacher to possess a concealed weapon permit along with a proof of completion of a specific firearm training program (“SB286,” n.d.). The bill did not pass in the Nevada Senate, but the bill did help to start the much-needed conversation about the ineffectiveness methods of the prevention of school shootings.
Because of the changes of brutal criminal acts on college campus, numerous professional weapon extremist have recommended that both the college student and college instructors ought to be permitted to carry concealed weapons on campus. Those for this may assert that their rights have been damaged on the grounds that numerous school grounds decline to permit weapons of any sort on grounds. It is not the privilege to convey a firearm which is in level headed discussion here, yet rather it is whether firearms ought to be permitted on a school grounds. The Constitution of The United States of America as of now concedes nationals the privilege to carry concealed weapon, and being in the south, I am by a wide margin no outsider to seeing a firearm every once in a while, however it is not proper for firearms to be in a defenseless region, for example, a school grounds. There are as of now an excess of firearms accessible to the general population, and permitting them on an instructive office would extraordinarily improve the probability of harm or demise. Americans, as beforehand specified, have the privilege to carry weapons, and this ought to be held sacrosanct, and not encroached, taken away, or restricted. Then again, stricter gun control ought to be executed for the individuals who decided to convey a hid weapon, and firearm control ought to be carried out by having stricter accreditation forms before a gun or firearm grant is issued, escalated mental assessment for the
Over the past several years the topic of gun control has been very relevant. With the increase in crime and the school shootings, everybody felt the need to have a concealed weapons permit. They wanted to be able to protect themselves and their children. No where is safe in this day in age everybody is fighting and angry. The one place you wouldn't think to worry about, the one place you trust your children to go to being "school" is now a dangerous place. Why would someone want to target a school with innocent children you may ask? Because these people are sick. This reason being why the teachers need to be allowed to have their concealed weapons permits and be able to carry a weapon on school grounds so that they can protect our children
On April 20th, 1999, two students brought guns to Columbine High School in Colorado. They injured 20 people and killed 13, one being a teacher (Columbine High School Shootings). After this tragedy occurred, many people began to believe schools are unsafe, which lead to the idea that firearms should be allowed in school for teachers and students to use in case of an emergency. However, many oppose and believe allowing guns would lead to more chaos and tragedy that is unnecessary and can easily be prevented. Concealed carry of guns by students and teachers should not be allowed because students and teachers cannot be trusted, there are other ways to ensure safety, and students and teachers could feel unsafe in schools.
Idaho Senator Jim Guthrie is discussing the pros and cons of allowing teachers and administrators to carry guns at school. A school district in north-central Idaho decided that some of the teachers and administrators should be trained and carry a gun. “I think we should give districts the maximum flexibility to make those decisions”(Journal Staff & Wire Reports). The National rifle association's believe all action to help keep children's safety should be considered. “ When a threat occurs, a quick and timely response by law enforcement professionals is what everyone hopes for, but in these when time is clearly of the essence we strongly believe that trained school personnel can also serve a vital role”( Journal Staff & Wire Reports).
Concealed carry is allowed in the public why shouldn’t it be allowed in schools? If adults had weapons they could protect students. I believe in school’s adults should have the right to carry a concealed weapon.
Campuses across the United States continue to grow vulnerable every day. Since the Columbine Shooting in 1999, the nation has witnessed over two hundred and fifty shootings that were committed on a school campuses (Pearle, 2016). These shootings have been committed on school grounds, starting at the elementary level all the way through post graduate school. With the rise of social media and the internet; campus shootings have grained more attention nationally. In October 1990 Congress implemented the Gun Free School Zone Act (GFSZA); for public federally funded schools to create a barrier around designated school zones, to prevent gun related violence. The GFSZA designates a predetermined distance of 1,000 feet from school’s grounds as a gun free zone. This keeps a law-abiding citizen defenseless when entering a campus premises and allowing any potential criminal a safe-haven to commit a crime. Law abiding citizens should be allowed to concealed carry on school campuses because not only is it a Constitutional right, but it also
“The first thing Violand saw was a gun, then the gunman, ‘I quickly dove under a desk, ’he recalled, ‘that was the desk I chose to die under.’ “(Maraniss). While the U.S. constitution says Americans have the right to bear arms, firearms continue to threaten our schools, work and religious areas. Regardless of the danger that guns possess some states have passed a bill to allow campus carry, which grants professors and college students the choice to carry a firearm on college or university campuses. Although, we have seen the amount of influence that firearms have caused in the past a good amount of public still supports the claim that guns are a reasonable source of protection. However, while many in favor of campus carry view it as a safety precaution, campus carry should not be allowed because there is no evidence that proves campus carry will keep students safer and carrying a concealed weapon can distract from the learning environment.
This website provides a lot of meaningful and relevant information as well logical opinions which are closely related to the idea that teachers should be allowed to carry guns at school. Throughout the article, the writer does a great at emphasizing on a few of the major reasons why many people are so against teachers being allowed to carry guns in schools. Thus being that for many, it is simply an ideological objection, while others believe that instead of providing guns to teachers solely for the purpose of protecting themselves and their students we should be working to keep guns out of the hands of homicidal maniacs. He proceeds by efficiently explaining the reasons as to why these objections can be considered faulty. While reading this
Watching the news every afternoon to see another victim assaulted, killed or abused with the use of a gun makes my fear grow immensely. Many things can occur with someone that has a gun in hand. In colleges and universities individuals have used their gun power to brutally kill students. Recently the State of Texas approved open carry in school grounds. Open carry should not be permitted in Texas colleges and universities.
There has been many school shootings in the past two years, and the government and schools have been trying to find solutions to the gun problem. A few school districts have established, and been approved by the government, to permit some teachers and staff members to carry a concealed weapon on school grounds. Other school districts oppose the idea of gun handling on school grounds, and wish to find a different solution to the gun problem. In my opinion, schools should have teachers carry concealed weapons.
The sate of Texas perhaps is seeking to give all college students the right to protect themselves while they are outside of their homes, due to all of crime and corruption going on. However the state of Texas is also looking into passing this law not only for students but also professors and staff of the university or college. However in order for students to be able to carry a handgun they need to have their CHL license and must be 21 years old. I do not agree with this decision at all. I myself as a college student will not feel safe walking around campus knowing that any of the students walking next to me could have a handgun. What if student provokes a another student and he is in a possession of a handgun, he could feel in power to take
Teachers should not be allowed to carry guns during school because students could discover it and use it on somebody at school. A student could harm another student for no reason it will not be safe for teachers to carry guns because students feel like that will not help reduce the problem of school shootings. There is no reason teachers should have guns when students could find it and use it in school. When a teacher has a gun in the classroom students, don't feel safe. Parents of students should talk to their child about gun safety to help stop gun violence during school.
Laws in many governments prohibit carrying a knife. However, carrying a weapon is permitted in come cases, such as the Kirpan, a ceremonial sword worn at all times by followers of the Sikh religion. Nevertheless, ethics and morals do not determine a law. Instead, what is just and unjust is what matters, as John Austin believed, and to some, religion is not a recognizable purpose to carry a weapon. Possession of a knife in itself is not evil; rather the potential for violence creates a need for control and so elimination of the possibility is vital.
