Why is training as a professional gymnast so demanding on gymnast’s bodies? To partake in gymnastics it takes a vast amount of upper body strength. This strength alone is hard to build and maintain. ‘Trainings are extreme with any hours, lots of physical demands as well as mentally challenging’ . Great bursts of energy and power are needed to use this strength. Also a great amount of advanced physics come into executing skills perfectly. All of these aspects effect gymnasts can be positive and or negative. One of the major issues that effect gymnasts is the age they begin. Most elite gymnasts begin from the ages two to five From these young ages there is no holding back, overstretching strenuous hours, immeasurable amounts of conditioning all …show more content…
Also early preparation for gymnastics is one of the most important aspects. From personally knowing older gymnasts who started at ages three to five I know that this early intense training affects them immensely, both physically and mentally. ‘Recreational coaches have stated that a the age of three children should not be training or competing competitively.’ However elite Coaches believe that beginning to learn and over stretch children will assist with their gymnasts in later in their career, however this is not the case after this career is over. ‘The current methods for teaching gymnasts are extremely demanding at advanced levels, require that children give up many areas of their lives. This can have extremely negative effects on developing children.’ ‘Girls in gymnastics are especially vulnerable to delayed puberty. Menstrual cycles are often delayed and or stopped for an extended amount of time. Both girls and boys are susceptible to stunted growth due to over training and excessive dieting and the extreme stress that is associated with gymnastics.’ A gymnast’s career is usually from childhood to possibly early adult hood ages four to twenty seven. After this time many gymnasts begin to break down either physically or mentally. Their bodies cannot handle the pressure and they no longer have the power or strength to do the hard skills. Starting gymnasts at such a young age is mostly to get the most of their time and effort into gymnasts before they ‘burn out’. Its not necessarily the gymnastics that is disadvantaging the gymnasts it’s the amount of strenuous hours and injuries that occur during the trainings. ‘Some retired gymnasts had to retire at a very young age because or joint injuries. The intensity that they had to train at was extreme, and it was stated that it was hard to train when their joints could not
In elementary the student at the informing stage and just getting acclimated to gymnastics and dance. These student will learn basic body management from general space, body management, performing symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes, and narrow and wide stances. A teacher should make sure every student is learning the skills needed, so when they get to middle school they will not be discouraged. In middle school the students are in the refining stage, and should have a basic understanding of their body, but have not mastered it. These student have enough learned skills to start putting sequences and/or routines together starting from shapes, rolls, and using some equipment. This knowledge shows the cognitive understanding of what was learned at the elementary level. Also, they will be able to flow with music. A teacher at this level should have the student make sure student can make a routine and practice. While high school student are in the applying stage, and will have the knowledge to put a well-defined routine together for display. This students will have a good understanding of
According to Chris Mallac, the Sports Injury Doctor, gymnasts suffer many growth problems. This includes back problems. One problem includes Scheuermann's disease. One is diagnosed with this disease when the front portion of their back does not develop. In fact, gymnasts are commonly diagnosed because of the repetitive flexing and arching of the back. This disease leads to hunchback. Specifically, the spine starts to wedge out. Scheuermann's disease can take gymnasts out of the sport for periods of time to let their spine grow and function properly. Gymnasts are also commonly diagnosed with premature osteoporosis. This is when the bones weaken, leading to bone loss and severe back pain. These problems are caused because the back never has time
It is important for children to be involved in sport because active participation helps children develop skills. Research shows that there are many physical benefits to youth sport. Some of the developments that a child can make from participation in sport are agility, coordination, endurance, flexibility, speed, and strength (Taskforce, 2013). The research from “Maximizing the Benefits of Youth Sport” says that there are more specific developments that children develop from sport. The specific developments include: enhanced functioning and health of cardiorespiratory and muscular systems, improved flexibility, mobility, and coordination, increased

It all started when I was going to gymnastics with my friend Annabelle, before the elite tournament. When we got there, we started with stretches in the class. Our teacher Ms. Wilson thought we were ready to do level six gymnastics. Annabelle and we gave it a try. I doubted that we could do it but I had to just believe.Level six one of the hardest levels in our gym. Most girls on this team were 12 and 13 and Annabelle and I were 9.
I was pretty young when I began gymnastics, the age of three to be exact and I ended when I was about nine. Even though I didn’t participate in gymnastics for that long and advance to much in my own skill level, I watched people ahead of me and on the olympic stage. I was able to see how gymnastics is an art form, and how much talent it takes to advance. Gymnastics requires a lot of talent and determination because it takes time, patience, and perfection to learn new skills. A skill is a new flip on the mats or a trick on the bars or beam. I think this is what is amazing about the sport of gymnastics, it is not something that can be perfected overnight but it must be practiced and practiced to achieve perfection.
Gymnastics has been around over 2000 years ("History of the Sport of Gymnastics"). People have done gymnastics for various reasons, including to have a good time, compete against other gymnasts’, and to get in shape. Gymnastics has played a unique and vital role in American History. It was used to get men ready for war. The skills that it involves is very important to those going to battle. The running, mounting, jumping, and dismounting was all important to learn before going to war ("History of Gymnastics | ISport.com"). It combines grace, beauty, and strength. It is now a popular Olympic Sport. According to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association there are approximately 4.5 million gymnasts in the United States. Seventy-one percent of the gymnasts are females (Deusen). Males do participate in gymnastics, but a lot of the gymnasts’ are female.
Gymnastics is unequivocally one of the primary facets of my life, and consequently, becomes the preeminent vehicle for many of the successes and challenges in my life.
Since sports are such a big part of this world; at a young age kids see the super stars of the sports world and they want to be like them. This is what leads to kids wanting to specialize in a sport at such a young age. Kids want to devote lots of their time to training for a certain sport so they can reach an elite level by high school or college. Specializing in a sport means participating in the same sport season after season, and when you are not playing you are training for that sport. Many people believe that this is a major cause for injuries in the young sports world.
Gymnasts are known to be strong and have good coordination. I was a gymnast for eight years, and never once had gotten injured, or even gotten hurt the slightest inside the gym. Although outside the gym, that wasn’t the case. My coaches had always told my teammates and me to be careful outside the gym because that’s where we would get hurt the most. Boy were they right. That is why I have come to the conclusion and stand by the statement of, things aren’t always what they seem.
For this research paper, I will be researching the gymnastics scoring system, the controversy that the scoring has created over time, and the general history of the sport. Gymnastics started out as just an exercise program of different moves in Greece. The modernization of gymnastics began in the late 1700s, its been around for about 2,000 years. This is one of the oldest forms of exercise in the world. The scores are completely different not only because the system changed, but because the level of difficulty was also higher. In the sport of gymnastics ‘the perfect 10’ scoring system was changed the most.
In a research study, it was found that the risk of drug abuse was reduced in the adolescents due to physical training programs. Lowered depression and anxiety, reduced tobacco and alcohol use and balanced human development occurred due to the sport activities including gymnastics.

Gymnastics. One of the biggest and most recognized sports in my family. It was March 8th, the day of my gymnastics meet and also national women's day. What a coincidence. We constantly travel back and forth. From Marinette to a location that’s 3 or more hours away and then back. Some of these destinations can be miserable, long, and terrifying. Crazy and memorable things occur during these seasons. Hilarious to devastating moments and laughing so hard that our stomachs hurt. These feelings and moments are what we discover and live for.
Participation in sports and various physical activities during childhood are rewarding opportunities that stimulate growth, improved health, and enjoyment. Moreover, youth sports participation may also serve as an opportunity for cultivating future elite athletes. Today, a generation of parents is creating a trend towards early single-sport specialization, in order to develop their children into star athletes through long-term intense training of one sport (McIntosh, 2009). Although children may acquire a jumpstart to the development of athletic skills, young athletes can become vulnerable to develop permanent psychological, physical, and social consequences from extreme training in one sport. Ultimately, extreme training in one sport can hinder a child’s sports career for the rest of his or her life; therefore, children should not engage in early sports specialization.
