Romanticism is an intellectual, spiritual, and literary movement that begins at the start of the nineteenth century and concludes at the beginning of the twentieth century. Of the many characteristics that are associated with Romanticism, the characteristics that are most evident in literature from this period are the characteristics of individuality and imagination. The author Edgar Allen Poe exhibits these characteristics in his works “The Black Cat”, and the “The Raven”.

In “Tell-Tale Heart” written by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator was driven by an “evil eye” to undertake a murderous and dreadful exploit. In the 1800s, when it supposedly took place, people believed the superstition upon “evil eyes” about how they had a painful curse. The narrator had been vexed constantly by a vulture-like eye that belonged to an old man who he especially loved. He was particular and conscientious towards the entire slaughter. This could immediately conclude that the murderer was insane since he took the extent to assassinate someone over an eye. However, the narrator possibly could have been sane and just extremely anxious, therefore guilty, despite how hysterical he may have acted.

“My Appearance”, written by David Foster Wallace, revolves around a 40 year old female actress, Edilyn, who has made notable achievements in her acting career- including an Emmy nomination- and has been invited to David Letterman’s late night show. Her second husband is against this as he is worried that her appearance on the show could be problematic and terminate her career in the film industry. He believes that the sole purpose of Letterman’s show is to ridicule people and thus wants Edilyn to ridicule herself before Letterman has the chance to do it. Along with his friend Ron, they prepare Edilyn for the show and provide her with an earplug so that they can control how the show goes. They both believe that such a television appearance can either make you or break you depending on how well one handles David Letterman. At first the show is a disaster as things do not go as planned, but once Edilyn sets aside the acting and becomes her true self, the show ends up being a success. However, her husband still believes that she was acting and insists on the idea that no one is as they appear to be. In the end, despite her husband’s objection, Edilyn is convinced that Letterman is a sweet guy misunderstood by her husband and his friend.

How “bad” can one be when put in a seriously “bad” situation? “Greasy Lake,” written by T. These various situations, as well as the characters themselves, tell the reader something more than what is actually happening in the story. Mary Wroth alludes to mythology in her sonnet “In This Strange Labyrinth” to describe a woman’s confused struggle with love. The speaker of the poem is a woman stuck in a labyrinth, alluding to the original myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. The suggestion that love is not perfect and in fact painful was a revolutionary thing for a woman to write about in the Renaissance. Wroth uses the poem’s title and its relation to the myth, symbolism and poem structure to communicate her message about the tortures of love.

Sadness, guilt, and fear are some of the most negative emotions that humanity can experience, however they are also the strongest. The book even discusses the roles of a Mexican fiesta and cultural aspects of the Latino culture. By having Mexican holidays celebrated in Los Angeles, the city has become more invested into the Latino culture with the adoption of its cultural belief of death and celebrations techniques, which include excessively drinking, usage of guitars, letting off fireworks and celebratory gunshots.
