Harry Potter : Identity And Identity

In today’s world identification is key. Whether it be politically, nationally, economically, or even sexually, identity is a key element of our everyday lives. However, many people identify themselves through the things that they love whether that be a TV show, a movie, or a book. There are several subsections of nerdom that many do not know a lot about. For me, that subsection is Harry Potter. While I am quite friendly with many people who are well versed in the fiction and mythology of the book series, I myself have never gone deep into this world of fans. Yet, there is a major group of my fellow students who identify as “Potterheads.” Not knowing a great deal about this community and their ways of interacting with one another, I decided to go to a meeting of Chapman University’s Harry Potter club, the Chapman Marauders to answer a simple question: how can the Harry Potter novels connect students from various backgrounds to one another on Chapman’s campus?
The meeting that I attended was the Marauder’s first meeting of the year, and from my own understanding, their most important. This meeting was going to what is called their sorting hat party. It would create the beginnings of connections among those attending by sorting them into their Hogwarts house. In the books, students at Hogwarts are sorted into one of four houses at the school, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.
