There are several signs one can look for to recognize a possible victim. They may be seen with a much older boyfriend and show off new gifts life a designer purse, expensive jewelry, or a new phone. The victim may have a very sexually explicit online profile. Emotionally they may exhibit depression, anxiety, fear, or anger. Many have low self-esteem. Physically they may show symptoms of drug or alcohol abuse, appear malnourished, or have visible bruises and scars. International organizations such as Shared Hope and local groups such as Harvest House provide direct assistant to victims and training to those wishing to get involved. Harvest House works closely with the Beaumont Police Department and its sex trafficking task force. The organization was started by a local women after she became aware of the statistics of sex trafficking in southeast Texas and felt a call to become involved. Its purpose is to rescue and restore children under the age of 18 who have been caught up in the sex trafficking industry. The organization provides southeast Texans with an opportunity to help these victims. Their goal is to purchase a home for rescued girls through a variety of fund raising events. One of these fundraisers was a 5k Fun Run held in Lumberton last month. In January they will host a gala at the Elegante in Beaumont. The dinner will include a live auction and a silent auction. Along with a home for rescued girls, the proceeds from these events will fund needed counseling for rescued girls. It usually requires a year of intense, specialized counseling to break the control pimps have over these young girls. They also plan to distribute, to local hotels, bars of soaps which contain a hotline girls can call for help.
