Harvey Milk: Civil Rights Activist

Knowing this man is to love this man. He has been a great role model for and during the civil rights movement and so much more. This man’s name is John Lewis Others may say he is someone who just wanted to start trouble and he should leave things the way they were. By analyzing his early life, his education, becoming a civil rights activist, and a U.S. Congressman, I will be able to show you why I think he is a great person all around. It is also clear that John Lewis shaped his time.

Harvey Milk was one of the first openly gay officials in the U.S in 1977 who was unjustly assassinated because of jealousy and his lifestyle;however, others that disagree with his choices think he deserved to die. Harvey Milk was murdered do to political reasons and differences in opinion. Some people argue that he was murdered instead of assassinated.

My topic was a very unique one, for it has an important meaning to history. I chose this particular one, first, because it falls under the NHD theme, and second was the amount of empathy I felt with my topic. I had already knew who Thurgood Marshall was, but I didn’t know a lot about him. My curiosity to research more on him, pushed me to do this topic. This subject was important to select, for he was a civil rights activist, Supreme Court Justice, and he changed U.S. laws that discriminated against colored people.

His words still resonate today with anyone who is struggling with their sexual orientation. During the 70's the "LGBTQ+" was just the "GAYS". There was no education or resources for people who didn't fit in the majority view of American norms. The people of the LGBTQ+ were the voiceless people living in the shadow's of America or just in the closets of America like the Boogie Man. Milk gave the LGBTQ+ community a voice and a face and allowed for a start of acceptance of LGBTQ+ into mainstream America. Through his political and social activism he became known as the Mayor of Castro Street. His political life was cut short after just one year in office, who knows what kind of legacy he would have offered the world had he been allowed to live? He was named in "Time" magazine as one of the 100 most influential figures of the 20th century. Not a bad for a short political career that was just over 4 years and tragically cut short.

Civil Rights Activist W.E.B. Du Bois tackles a difficult era in American History following the Civil War which is known as Reconstruction. The era itself is well known for its lack of objectivity in the ways it has been viewed by white historians prior to the publication of this book in 1935. Du Bois book, Black Reconstruction in America: An Essay Toward a History of the Part Which Black Folk Played in the Attempt to Reconstruct Democracy in America, 1860–1880 attempts to revise the writings of pervious historians, who were devoted to their own sectional causes, partisan viewpoints and racist beliefs on Reconstruction.

Malcolm Little was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. His mother was Louise Norton Little, she was always occupied with taking care of the family. Malcolm’s family was made up of Malcolm’s Father Earl Little as well as his eight brothers and sisters. His father Earl, was a minister and a civil rights activist and leader. Earl also supported Marcus Garvey, Black Nationalist leader very much, this had resulted in many death threats from the white supremacist group Black Legion also making Malcolm’s family move twice before Malcolm had turned four. Courage is defined as the strength to withstand danger, to venture into the unknown, and to persevere in spite of difficulties that one may face. Marsha P. Johnson, a transgender woman of color who lived during the civil rights movement, is credited for throwing the first brick during the Stonewall Riots of 1969. Her choice to stand against police brutality in a time when most psychiatrists still viewed any break of the status quo as an issue or mental illness would eventually lead to the reformation of detrimental and unjust Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) policies and the nullification of sodomy laws. Michael King was an amazing Civil Rights movement leader. At a young age he knew racism was not only bad against his race, but was against God’s will. He was raised with the church background of The Dexter Avenue Baptist Church of Montgomery. Martin Luther King Jr. believed everyone was equal, he fought for African American rights, and spoke for equality until the end.

Have you ever notice a person that is or was courages or even brave ? Rosa Parks is the person that I believe that courageous and brave. Rosa Parks is courageous because she tried to make blacks and whites equal because she didn't like being separated by a skin color. “Rosa Parks was born on February 4 , 1913 in Tuskegee Alabama”. For the people that doesn't know she was a Civil Rights Activists.

What is freedom? Freedom is the state of being free without any confinement mentally or physically. It is the liberty from any external control or any restriction from the simple things in life. Africans were free before the Europeans started sailing across the ocean. The Native Americans were the original slaves in the United States but they were dying rapidly. The Europeans settled in the United States and started to rape the Native Americans women, killed the weak children and forced the men to work endlessly on the fields (Carson 1991, p.6). Rosa Park was and African-American civil rights activist she refused to give up her bus seat for a white passenger on December 1,1995 .The bus driver noticed that the whites only section was full and more whites were coming on the bus the bus driver ordered that three other blacks in the next row to move to the back the two others moved to the back of the bus but Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus and she got arrested after this happened Montgomery had no choice but to lift the law requiring segregation on public buses.A Officer on the scene said they asked rosa if she was tired they said her response was “I was not tired physically… No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”so this show that rosa was tired of getting

MLK was an important activist during the civil rights movement. He is most known for his non violent protest and his speeches. Most people don't really know that he had much about his speeches they usually only know one of them but he actually delivered 450 speeches a year.

Milk is a biographical film based on the life of gay activist and politician Harvey Milk. He was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California. He was a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Dan White, a city supervisor, assassinated Milk along with the mayor at the time George Moscone. Harvey Milk’s journey to become a member of the board was a difficult one. It took him several attempts before he was elected. However, he persevered and overcame the hatred pitted towards the gay community so that he could make a difference in ways society viewed gays.

This phenomenal movie is about the true story of Harvey Milk. He was a politician in San Francisco responsible for one of the most intense gay rights in American History. According to focusfeatures.com, Gus Van Sant is the director of this film. He has directed several other films like Good Will Hunting; according to the site, he was nominated for the Best Director Academy Award. A woman in the film begins the movie trailer stating that, “if homosexuals are allowed civil rights and so would prostitutes, or thieves or anyone else.” The main character of the movie, Milk, states that he is “40 years old and haven’t done a thing.” The setting of the trailer is 1978.

The world was shocked when Martin Luther King Jr. stepped up to protest unfair civil policies in the United States. King gained civil rights for African Americans and other minority groups. He was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, the second child of Reverend Martin Luther King Sr. and Mrs. Alberta Williams King. As a child, King faced racial discrimination from his white peers. As King grew older, he married Coretta Scott and had four children; he was also a reverend. “He was one of the greatest orators in American history and could stir the masses with his biblical cadences” (Sullivan 47). King changed America by advocating civil rights.
