On September 11th 2001, America experienced the most catastrophic terrorist attack on its home soil in the history of the country. The men responsible for this event hailed from Middle Eastern countries and identified as Islamic extremists. Two years after the attack, former president George W. Bush, announced that the United States would declare war on the terrorism and on the nations in the Middle East that harbored the terrorists group Al-Qaeda. The men at the top of this organization have been taken out of power and Al-Qaeda’s influence and leaders have been silenced to a certain extent. However, the United States still faces resistance in this unstable region and a new terrorist organization, ISIS, has appeared and is showing the …show more content…
By both of these distinguished economists standards the best course of action would be to immediately establish a free market and capitalism in Egypt. Friedman argues that if a country is given the opportunity to participate in a free market, the country will thrive economically and in turn the citizens quality of living will improve. He also believes that free market is the best remedy to any political matter as well. He as well as Hayek goes on to note that economic freedom is the best way to obtain political freedom for all . Under almost no condition would Friedman or Hayek ever permit government intervention in business, as it would create an unfair market and greatly deter good competition and …show more content…
Recently overthrown political leader Hosni Mubarak held the presidential position in Egypt from 1981-2011. He was only the fourth president to be elected in Egypt’s recent Republic government system starting in 1954. He abused his power and always won elections by massive margins. In the 2010 Egyptian elections, Mubarak’s party, the National Democratic Party (NDP), won 83% of the preliminary round of elections. He was widely accused of fraud and cheating on ballots . An Egyptian rights group called the Independent Coalition for Elections’ Observation commented that, “The elections were full of widespread violations that brough Egypt at least 15 years back” 3. This ballot fraud was a major contributor to Egyptian riots in 2011 during the Arab
For the past fifty years or so, Americans have had the great fortune of living safely in a relatively peaceful world. That perspective changed the moment a commercial airplane slammed into the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11th. Terrorists killed over 6,000 American citizens within a few hours. Suddenly, life as America knew it changed. Many stood in disbelief when they saw the joyous reactions of people cheering on the streets of Palestine. Our nation came to realize that we were truly hated, and that terrorist regimes rejoiced in our pain. The leader of one such a regime, Osama bin Laden, became America's clearly defined worst enemy. A war has begun between bin Laden and his terrorist followers,
On September 11, 2001 , the United States was attacked under the influence of Osama Bin Laden. Ever since these attacks took place the United States increased their security measures on who and what enters into the country to protect its grounds. The actions of Bin Laden came from a terrorist group named Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda was a terrorist group whose founder was Bin Laden. Al Qaeda led to evolution of Isis which is an insurgency and not a terrorist group. The evolution of Isis came from a book named Defense of Muslim Lands. Within this book the were the common beliefs and obligations to becoming a jihad. The key beliefs consisted of “ A Jihad is a personal obligation, Muslims have been humiliated by the hands of impure Regimes and western
On September 11 2001, an attack was made on United States. Four systematic terrorist attacks were pulled off by the group al-Qaeda simultaneously bringing down the World Trade Centre in New York and damaging the Pentagon in Washington D.C. As extensive and in depth as the cause for the attack may have been, September 11 is an event that has undoubtedly left its mark in American history. A turning point, as some would call it, of the political, social, and economic systems of the United States. Quickly following the terrorist attack on 9/11, President George W. Bush called for a “war against terrorism.” Instead, what truly occurred was an act of counter terrorism. After 9/11, the political system of America took a turn for the worst;
Al-Qaeda and ISIS have killed innocent people in the name of their religious ideology. A report by Dr. Sebastian Gorka “The Islamic State and Information Warfare: Defeating ISIS and the Broader Global Jihadist Movement” Indicated that ISIS was a full-fledged self-insurgency and is, in fact, the world’s first transnational insurgency. Their recruiting capacity is astonishing. Even Boko Haram and his group joined forces with ISIS. According to Dr. Gorka, ISIS is one the richest terrorist groups in existence today. In addition, ISIS is expanding rapidly; one of their missions is to overthrow “all the governments in Muslim countries and gain control” (Habeck). Both ISIS and Al-Qaeda have committed horrendous crimes against men, women and children. ISIS has displaced hundreds of thousands of people and many are migrating to other countries and asking for
Although, it did not take long before America realized that the Al Qaeda group was responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks. In addition, the organization was led by Osama bin Laden. Besides, the Al Qaeda group had declared war openly on the States of America (Capone, 2011). As a result, the group was ready to terminate lives of innocents’ lives in America and the entire world. Therefore, America started war against Al Qaeda with the aim of protecting the citizens, friends as well as allies. However, after 10 years of the heroic and tireless effort of American military with the tireless support of the counter-terrorism professionals American had yielded some fruits. In addition, America had strengthened its homeland defense and disrupted attacks by the
Within the last decade the United States has had to confront Salafi jihadist ideology (?Salafists?) both at home and abroad through the attacks of September 11th, the counterinsurgency in post-war Iraq, and the invasion and counterinsurgency (COIN) operations in Afghanistan. The Salafists ?call for the restoration of authentic Islam as expressed by an adherence to its original teachings and texts.? 1 The belief that violence was justified through Islamic teachings to realize political objectives provided an opportunity for modern terrorists to validate their actions through their religion.2 Al Qaeda, the terrorist organization led by Osama Bin-Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, have become the face of this ideological movement, while the original, modern thought leaders espousing such principles were organized by Egypt?s Muslim Brotherhood in 1928.3 Destroying this movement consists of stopping terrorists attacks, destroying terror networks, reforming terrorists, and preventing the creation of new Salafists. Many within the intelligence community (IC) believe the prevention of new terrorists must occur by winning the ?War of Ideas? and successfully managing the information space. The Defense
When the September 11, 2001 attacks occurred the United States responded in a manner which was seen as a traditional reaction to such an attack; it used its overwhelming superior military to invade the nation of Afghanistan. As Afghanistan was the operating base of the terrorist group responsible for the attacks, Al Qaeda, the invasion all but destroyed the group's operating capacity. But in response to the United States' apparent victory the terrorists have re-organized themselves into a looser confederation and turned to alternative methods of finance and operation. One could say that the success of the American military's answer to the September 11th attacks have created a new environment in which terrorists currently operate. This includes the use of the internet, unconventional alliances with international criminal organizations, as well the inception of the "lone wolf" terrorist. Faced with these new type of threats, the United States and its allies must find a way to identify and deal with them.
In 2006 al-Qaeda became known as the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) and eventually took its final form as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). ISIL is believed to be a response to western military intervention in the Muslim world. In fact, prior to the war in Iraq there was no Taliban in Pakistan and significant extremist groups. Also, before Operation Iraqi Freedom al-Qaeda did not even exist. This exemplifies the idea that whenever the United States gets involved in foreign affairs rebel groups form in response. Unfortunately, rather than take responsibility for the rise of ISIL, the United states only focuses on how they can get rid of the problem. This shows a lack of responsibility by the United States, and instills a level of distrust by United States citizens. ISIL groups have ravaged terror into this region since they were first established, and they have gotten more malicious in response to military endeavors in their country. For example, ISIL declared war on the Shiites in Iraq in response to their collaborations with the United States in attacking Sunni villages that were harboring ISIL members. This is believed to be a key event in the emergence of ISIL and the high interest that people had in joining. Although the ISIL members were once in collaboration with Sunni Muslims, their relations fell apart because ISIL could not follow the Islamic laws that pertained
My argument is that Friedman is not correct. Friedman’s description of the business process of undemocratic is agreeable. However, the corporate executive must be fully qualified to an confident in spending the stockholders or customers or employees money and must in fact know how to spend it. This is in total contradiction to one of Friedman’s essential claims. The corporate executive who accomplishes social responsibility outcomes with the limited time, funds, and effort allocated to him / her is doubtedly providing forward the profitability, awareness, and value of the brands which him / her represents. Customers express value in their purchases. Any causal reading will clearly indicate the value both the American and global customers place
Prior to September 11, 2001 The United States of America did not have the proper tools to proactively prevent and respond to a major terrorist attack. After seeing the preparation and planning of the attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York City and realizing that it happened within American borders, policy makers were left scrambling to come up with new laws and policies to prevent this from happening again. There are hundreds of terrorist groups throughout the world but
In today’s day and age, the United States faces a new evil which has risen from the ashes of “Al-Quada In Iraq.” It has taken the place of other insurgent groups where we deployed military forces in the Middle East and beyond. The atrocities caused by this group may go down in history on the same level of Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany during World War II, Khan, Stalin, and the Crusades. As stated above, the so-called “Islamic State” began as Al-Queda in Iraq, evolving into the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Now, they simply call themselves, the Islamic State, or IS. We must understand what this means ideologically. Ideology has been defined by many scholars as “religious extremism.” The statement made by ISIS to the west and the whole world has not been fully understood by all. It not only considers itself to be an Islamic Caliphate (an extremist Islamic government ruled by Sharia law), but THE Caliphate, hoping to encompass the globe. This threat is not to be taken lightly.
Today there is a new extremist organization that rivals even al -Qaeda (Beauchamp 1). This terror group is named the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria., or in short, ISIS. Three years ago, ISIS did not exist but now it controls parts of Iraq and Syria and has made its own state. Terror organizations like al-Qaeda are merely terrorists groups while ISIS has captured and created their own state. ISIS is a well developed organization that has shown their handiwork repeatedly on social media and YouTube (Khedery 1). ISIS is much more developed than most terror groups in that it has a, “...sophisticated command, control,propaganda, and logistics capabilities, and one that has proven its ability to take and hold strategically critical territory at the heart of the Middle East” (Khedery 1). ISIS is an international threat that can be stopped if the United States takes military action.
The world has been changed forever since the tragic attack on September 11, 2001. An observer described the atrocity by saying, "It just went 'bam,' like a bomb went off. It was like holy hell (CNN 1). " The new world will be different from what any American has known before. A new war has arisen, not against a foreign country or a major region of the world, but rather against a select group of people who have the capabilities to destroy the lives of so many. The war against terrorism which the United States is now forced to wage will not be an easily won battle. This war will not be fought solely on scattered battlefields in certain countries. It will instead permeate through every aspect of life as we
The world is at war. You ask with who? Terrorism, to be more specific though they are called The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). They have a few other names as well, The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Daesh. I will choose to call them Daesh in this piece because these terrorists find it insulting. The reason for this is that Daesh an acronym for ISIS in Arabic. This acronym though sounds exactly like the Arabic word dais, which means something that crushes or tramples. “In recent months many Arabs and Western leaders, including Secretary of State John Kerry, prefer to call it Daesh, the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State. But Islamic State members hate the term because in Arabic, the pronunciation is close to a word that can be variously translated as "to crush" or "bigot who imposes his will on others" (Reid, 2). Daesh do not want this title and have threatened to cut out the tongues of people who use it. Daesh are a product of instability in the Syrian and Iraq region plus a Syrian civil war. Unfortunately, America is greatly at fault for the instability in Iraq and helped fund the Syrian rebels, so you could say the U.S. helped create them. Daesh’s goal is to start a religious war. They want the world to fear Islam and want them to hate it. They showed us exactly what they were capable of in Paris France. The world needs to realize that this
The Islamic State formerly known as ISIS is the most secure international terrorist group in the world. Their goal is to create an Islamic state. They don 't value human lives and morality is nonexistent within the group. ISIS behead innocent Americans, holding the decapitated head of a victim up to the camera in order to recruit others around the world to join their fight. These gruesome propaganda videos are one of the many ways ISIS has recruited thousands of people around the world. Unfortunately, America, one of the strongest military nations in the world, procrastinated in taking action to eliminate ISIS and is still suffering the consequences of not responding in a more swift and forceful manner to the threat. Even though President Obama eventually responded to the ISIS crisis, his response was inadequate. ISIS has continued attacks on sixteen different countries around the globe. They are here in America and have been for awhile. They operate unpredictably and swiftly in order to attack blind targets, and America holds one of the top places on that target list.
