You Are What You Eat Do you read the labels on the products you buy? Do you know what is put in the food you consume? There are many health risks associated with the additives in products. Most Americans are unaware of the risks that are linked with the additives in commonly purchased products. My daughter was one year old when I realized she was allergic to artificial coloring. One morning we woke up and I made us a toasty bagel. I topped the warm crunchy bagel with light pink, strawberry, cream cheese. We enjoyed our bagel as we watched Sunday morning cartoons. Suddenly I noticed her face was as red as a cherry. In a panic I took her to the bathroom to check for other symptoms. She was red from head to toe with red raised bumps all over. I immediately called the doctor, who advised me to take her to the emergency room. After the doctor examined her she told us it was a food allergy. I realized she broke out after eating food that contained artificial coloring. Once I started to look at labels, to avoid buying harmful products, I realized almost everything contained added coloring. Many manufactures over use artificial coloring in the United States, which can lead to serious health problems. Americans need to become aware of what is added to our food, and ban artificial coloring. How can we find a solution to a problem, if most of us are UN aware that a problem exists? First, we must find out what is in artificial colors. Artificial color, food color, and
There has also been a shift in marketing for these harmful products, most of which is funded by the lobbyist for these unhealthy foods. There are pharmaceutical companies and food companies that fund organizations such as the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association and even the American cancer society, this is a complete conflict of interest. (What the Health) These companies are advertising their products, for example Danon on the American Cancer Website, when we know that Dairy has strong links to breast cancer! (What the Health) As a direct result our population has become sick, and unhealthy and disease prone. There has been an exponential increase in diabetes and heart related issues, as well as cancer. My generation in particular has been exposed to this nonsense as children, in the school system. This is still happening today and it is a huge problem. We might be the first generation to not outlive our parents. (What the Health) The historical play in view of food and consumerism in my generation has played a big part in my historical sociological imagination.
The American people cannot stand for injustice, and must collectively fight back at the unethical business practices that are performed at the expense to the consumer. As long as we keep buying the products that give us cancer, diabetes, and a number of other diseases, we are telling the companies that we support what they are doing, therefore we must vote with our wallets. The only way we will change is if the big companies do not get our
Some interesting questions were brought up that I was thinking of as well, questions such as, shouldn’t some of these additives be banned from usage in the foods we eat or shouldn’t they carry warning labels for users who do not know the dangers of these foods? I believe they certainly should be banned because we lived without these chemicals in our foods long ago, and we used natural flavors and colors in the previous years of humanity and according to research and studies the chemicals in the foods we consume today have obviously proven to trigger and increase the chance of getting many disorders. While reading The New York Times one of the studies mentioned and brought up was the selection of several hundreds of kids, and some kids were in a control group that received some special treatment by basically being given an additive-free placebo drink that looked and tasted the same and all of the children in the study were evaluated for inattention as well as their hyperactivity by their parents, teachers as well as a computer test and in this study neither the researchers nor the subject knew which drink the children had consumed. In conclusion of the study the researchers discovered that the kids were significantly more
Most Americans love the low cost, prepackaged, great tasting food that is convenient to buy and prepare. These prepackaged or processed foods are normally made to be faster, cheaper and usually taste great but they are loaded with bizarre, unpronounceable chemicals that, if you saw them in their pre-processed state, you would never consider putting in your mouth. Emulsifiers, preservatives, colorants, stabilizers, artificial sweeteners, texturizers and even bleach can be found in most processed foods. On average, Americans spend 90% of their food budget on these types of foods which is found to contribute to the leading causes of obesity, auto immune disease, diabetes and even cancer.
The state of the American Health in the U.S has become an increasing concern of many Americans. An article entitled “11 Facts about American Eating Habits,” addresses the state of food in the U.S by stating, “Healthiness of the food we eat decreases by 1.7 percent for every hour that passes in the day.” Experts and scientists in the U.S has raised questions about regarding the different ways food is now being produced. While individuals are usually not aware of the ingredients that food contains, many people continue to have unhealthy eating habits. In the past few decades, food production has included numerous artificial ingredients that are said to be the cause of various health problems. Various artificial ingredients that are commonly
An innocent child is standing in a candy store and looking at all his favorite options from which to choose. He slowly reaches for the bag of M&Ms, and he does not know what all the chemicals in that bag will cause him. The M&Ms have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) causing carcinogens in them called food dyes. These food additives help the food products stay vibrant and eye catching but America’s youth does not know what the consequences are when you eat these products. Children think they are nice and colorful but they do not know what lies behind the wonderful rainbow of colored M&Ms in that bag. That is why The United States needs to ban food color additives to make our nation healthier. The main points on food dyes are the problems they cause, the counter argument against them and the steps the country can take to solve these problems.
As children, we rarely look at the back of our chocolate bar or care what elements are in the french fries we indulge in. Whilst getting older, we become more conscious of what is going into our food, and what we put in our bodies. We are more aware of the places that we go to eat, and are constantly looking at reviews. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a government federal agency whose purpose is to ensure our safety as consumers. There are various factors that the FDA oversees, thus requiring a substantial budget. Last year, the over-all spent was 4.8 billion dollars, which is generally made from taxes and user fees from the drug industry. They regulate food consumption,
With the sales of organic foods rapidly increasing in recent years, jumping from $1 billion to $21 billion in just eighteen years, it is important for consumers to be well-informed when choosing either organic or inorganic (Bradbury et al, 2014). These products, with labels boasting claims such as no artificial fertilizers or pesticides and the use of ecologically friendly farming techniques, have become somewhat of a trend since their arrival in the early to mid twentieth century. As the public becomes increasingly cautious of what they eat, concern has been growing regarding the adverse health effects of ingestion of pesticides and artificial fertilizers in food products. It is not surprising, therefore, that perceived health
The things the American consumer eats are not what they seem to be. Much like pollution, the major food companies are treating America to unhealthy products that can cause physically damage to the human body. From motivational competition to company rivals, people aspire for greatness, to be the best at what they do. Some people desire to be the best will even go to drastic measures to get what they want. Companies like General Mills and Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, Nestle, Kraft, and Nabisco have more than their friendly share of competition, some could even say that they are fighting for the monopoly of the food industry.
Food companies are worried less about what people are consuming, and what it is doing to their bodies. Companies are worried more about convenience, cost, and efficiency. Companies making food know with the substantial amount of chemicals that are available companies can stockpile millions of chemicals into one batch of food and make it cheaper, and taste the same. It is becoming extremely convenient for people to go to a gas station grab food filled with chemicals, and leave. Chemicals in food are only going to progressively get more out of
America is known for being one of the unhealthiest nations in the world. This true statement is able to be traced all the way back to what is in our foods: corn, sugar, salt, and fat. Each of these ingredients are generally okay to consume small amounts. Unfortunetly, many Americans are consuming extremely high amounts of these products, simply because the ingredients are in nearly every meal you can think of. In order to fix this dilemma, the government must take action for their responsibility by requiring food labels to be clear and accurate, boost incentives for marketing healthier foods, and end subsidies for corn and soy, all while encouraging the population to consume healthier foods.
Corporations that produce processed foods add so many chemicals that can damage the body in ways that are deadly. Important organs to the body can be destroyed by consuming too much of the chemicals. Some of these chemicals can even cause or increase the chance of getting cancer. A lot of restaurants have the infamous sign that states “This product contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer.” People would see this in the restaurants they consume from but wouldn’t question it or even stop consuming the toxic food. At this point people have stopped investing in the betterment of their own health and lives. They believe they can’t change, it’s too hard for them to stop, or they have no choice because it’s their only option. So once a person gets ill from consuming all the chemicals in processed foods they turn to their health care provider for medical assistance but they would do anything to not waste money and not cover any medical cost. When health care companies waste money for doctors appointments, medicine, or any treatment they might need they start looking for loopholes so they won’t be responsible for the bills. The insurance companies would sometimes blame the client and name it a pre existing condition because they don’t cover cases like those.. Many health insurance companies don’t cover it when it is pre
Many scientific researchers have said that our environment has been filled with toxic chemicals, which us humans have had a part of. There are many different issues that should concern us surrounding these toxic chemicals. The major concern is that many of these toxic chemicals have been claimed to be causing damage to the health of humans and even other life forms. Another concern is that most of the theses toxic chemicals have just recently been produced; and by our environment changing everyday there is no telling what effects these toxic chemicals may have in the long run on the public 's health. Just about all of these toxic chemicals exist in the way they do because of humans. As humans we practice a lot of different activities that cause toxic chemicals to pollute our environment such as, agriculture, industrial, and many domestic activities as well. Many of the toxic chemicals that we produce and use don 't get used in a effective way, which causes them to be wasted, left abandoned, and disposed of. When toxic chemicals are not disposed of properly they effect the environment and the public 's health in a negative way.
Advice the stakeholders about the problem, so he can avoid the problem in the future and all of them together take an action about the problem and deal with it, creating a common sense that suits all, stakeholders, professor Ballistico and customers. I believe that the researches should be done about the problem and try to solve it. In case they don’t announce the
Throughout the years, there has been an incredible amount of speculation as to what ingredients are being put into the food we consume. The same food manufactured by major food corporations that can only be approved by the FDA. There are many techniques that these food corporations can use in order to gain consumer loyalty, but the main focus is the way their advertising works. Along with these advertisements, comes a target market as well. The food industry is constantly in speculation because there are always new foods that corporations want approved to sell. Some of these businesses are part of the fast food industry and others are international food companies that sell their products around the world. As adults and parents, we need to
