Catherine writes on page 33; ”My uncle George was brought gaiety and wonder into my life. I will not give him to Aelis and satisfy myself with wormwood cordials!”Catherine was stubborn and selfish, and wanted to have her uncle only for herself. She had feelings for him, and couldn’t stand the thought that George and her friend, Aelis were getting together. She plans to find a curse or potion to bring them apart again, and succeeds. Then, only 12 pages later she recalls , “I said the turn-love-to-hate chant under my breath…”She believes the curse to work, as George drinks and is miserable, and does not acknowledge Aelis anymore. This is of course, not because of Catherine, but because Aelis is forced to marry another suitor. Born the second son of a royal family, Henry Tudor lived a very interesting life. His future was intended to be the head of the Roman Catholic Church and that fate ended with the death of his brother, Prince Arthur. Henry’s majestic life was full of sports, women, and faith. The young King acceded his father to the throne, married six women, and began the English Reformation when he broke away from the Roman Catholic Church and created his own religion.

Henry VIII's Reformation In 1529 Henry VIII started to reform the Catholic Church in England, however there are different opinions as to why he began these controversial changes. The orthodox view concurs that there was a vast anti-clerical feeling in 16th century England; the corrupt church was unpopular with the masses. However the revisionist view claims that the reformation was actually due to politics. Henry needed a male heir and therefore needed a divorce.

After his failing business Henry married to Sarah Shelton 3 years later. She was the daughter of a local innkeeper, in 1754. When he married Sarah he received some land he tried growing tobacco, but this didn’t last but 3 years.

King Henry VIII was an important figure in helping to kick start the Reformation in England, even though it was not his intent. His break with the Papacy and his constantly changing ideas on how the new Church of England should be run gave the Protestants the foothold they needed to gain popularity in Europe. Although his intentions were purely politically motivated, he started a change in the way the layman viewed the church and how it should be run.

As king of England, Henry has the power and the unquestionable authority to act based off his own desires even if they are not legally or morally acceptable. Because his current wife, Catherine, who was also his brother’s widow, has failed to birth a son, he wishes to divorce her and take Queen Anne as his new wife. Without a male heir to the throne, Henry’s lineage will come to an end and England will be left without a successor. He admits this to More during their meeting in Act 1, saying,

History remembers King Henry VIII and his many wives. Very few remember his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. She was known as being quite beautiful and a great queen.
