From what I have learned about the Hero’s Journey, I could relate it to myself as an example in numerous ways. I believe that the day since a person is born until the day they pass away is a hero’s journey. There are different situations that a person has to deal with during their journey of life. During a person’s life, there is always at least a mentor. For me, my mentors are my parents and teachers. The mentor's job is to help and guide the hero. My parents, who act as a mentor to me, provide guidance, direction, and protection. They motivate and support me to see me reach my goals and be successful in our lives. When I am going on a wrong path, they will assist me to put me back on the right path. They teach me different skills in order
The “Hero’s Journey” as founded by Joseph Campbell, can be detected in numerous works of literature including Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, and even in lives of the authors themselves. Ultimately, everyone’s lives are hero’s journeys, including Hemingway himself. Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey” is a way to categorize similar concepts in literature to help classify parts of the story. There are six main phases of the “Hero’s Journey”: the call to action, the answering of the call, the threshold guardians, the crossing of the threshold, the dragon battle and the master of two worlds. The call to action is the invitation the protagonist receives from someone or something to venture into the unknown. The protagonist likely
In 2014, I attended the Hero's journey summer program in hope to discover myself and to become a better man. My father who has attended the program many of times introduced me to the foundation and thought I should give it a try under the Young Men’s program with 8 other teens from around the world. Nervous but also excited about discovering who I truly was and what brotherhood really meant I found myself becoming the best of friends with these guys for 7 days. During the trip I learned that in relationships it is not only about how much you have in common, but that you trust each other and can work together as one. I could not tell you those guys last name or their favorite video game but I can tell you that I knew they had my back no matter what.
Small or big, everything we do in life is part of our journey. Reg Harris’ “The Hero’s Journey” describes the voyage one takes throughout life to grow and change as a person. He breaks the journey down into eight steps leading to the return. It starts out as a goal that isn’t always easy to reach, one goes through hardship and personal doubts only to succeed and become a better person. An example of this journey can be found in the movie, Troy through the character Achilles. Achilles is a strong fearless warrior in the movie, Troy who goes through “The Hero’s Journey” and ends up with a change of heart.
Today was my first lesson in humility. Some of the elder Monks had reprimanded me for my selfish thoughts and words. This was my first transgression and thus I was taught my lesson behind closed doors.
“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”(Joseph Campbell). Joseph Campbell showed how important hero’s are by creating the Hero’s Journey and that you can be a hero just through writing and showing it through different characters. A hero shows that you can help other people to make the world better
When he was younger, Arn-Chorn was forced to wake up and work in the rice fields from 1 to 7 in the morning. He wasn’t allowed to sleep, he was only allowed a thirty minute break, with very little food. Arn and other kids his age were forced to work out in the fields under the blazing sun, wearing a black pajama. Working day and night, in order to survive, Arn started to steal food from the kitchen. The extra food allowed him and his “friends” to survive at least one more day. He had many opportunities to run away from his camp to find his family, but he stayed because he knew that he wouldn’t be able to survive a day out in the jungle. There are many other kids and families like Arn who are forced to face this situation. Some families are
The stages of the Hero’s Journey can be found in myths, fairy tales, dreams, and movies. All of these movies will experience the same stages but different stories. To begin with, before the Hero takes his journey he starts off in the ordinary world that allows us to understand his background, problems, characteristics and flaws. After understanding where he is from, the Hero then gets “The Call to Adventure”. This call can either ruin or drastically change the Hero’s ordinary world. Usually the call is for the Hero to fix a problem into the special world. Many Hero’s may reject that call which is known as the “Refusal of the Call”. The reason for them refusing could be because of either fear, obligation, insecurity, or sense of duty. Once they accept the
Watching a film, one can easily recognize plot, theme, characterization, etc., but not many realize what basic principle lies behind nearly every story conceived: the hero’s journey. This concept allows for a comprehensive, logical flow throughout a movie. Once the hero’s journey is thoroughly understood, anyone can pick out the elements in nearly every piece. The hero’s journey follows a simple outline. First the hero in question must have a disadvantaged childhood. Next the hero will find a mentor who wisely lays out his/her prophecy. Third the hero will go on a journey, either literal or figurative, to find him/herself. On this journey the hero will be discouraged and nearly quit his/her quest. Finally, the
Hero’s always have a desire, sometimes they know exactly what they want, but other times it turns out to be serendipitous. Some examples of where heroes are driven by desire include the movie Thor directed by Kenneth Branagh, Around the World in Eighty Days written by Jules Verne, and The Odyssey written by Homer. In all of these pieces desire motivates and changes the hero throughout the story. In literature the role of the hero is fueled by the desire of going home, but then changes for a different kind of home.
My life has always been a series of transitional phases that was as every-changing as the seasons themselves. The words of my literary heroes were my utmost comfort; they inspired my confidence and my character, and moved me to be a more visceral, understanding person. I believe that during my time I have been wizened, and connected to the roots of all humanity; in my imagination I see it as the growth of a sampling into the dampness of the earth and the jaded formation of rough bark. Ralph Waldo Emerson, whose transcendental views have inspired me, was once quoted as saying, “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” I believe that is true, and with every choice I’m reminded of that hopeful and assertive message.
Rion calmed from his night terror easily, and he and Percival went back to sleep. When morning arrived, Rion shot out of bed with a grin, full of his typical energy. He had no memory of his tears and screaming the previous night, which was just as well; the boy deserved peace after all the heartache he had weathered.
Months later she told me what actually went through her mind that day. She told me how her legs began to shake when she discovered who it was. She was an equestrian as well and had seen her share of accidents at horse shows. When she first heard the news, she thought it was someone else; then she learned it was her best friend.

The most critical part of the journey of a hero, is the challenges they face. A knight may have to save a princess from a castle, but first he must face the challenge of the dragon in his way. Or someone may want to get a law passed, but to do so they have to appeal to their local government. Challenges can be seen as an obstacle to the hero, but often times, they are also an opportunity. They can be an opportunity to get stronger, or learn something. If you face the challenge head-on, and don’t cower away, you will likely end up a better person for
A Hero’s Journey by Joseph Campbell describes the different elements of what it means to be a hero. A book that utilizes these elements, A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle is a story about the adventures of a young girl named Meg, her brother Charles Wallace, and friend Calvin. Meg comes from a supportive and brilliant family with a beautiful mother, but her father who she adores dearly, has not come home for many months. Meg’s genius little brother, Charles Wallace befriends an old lady that Meg is initially suspicious of, but ends up helping her tremendously in bringing her father home. Throughout this story Meg faces challenges and grows as a character after overcoming many obstacles that ultimately aid in saving her father and brothers life.
