I’ll answer that question by looking at the most fundamental social unit of any culture…the family.

In my culture, rigid gender roles are enforced from the moment a child can communicate. Sex and gender in the Haitian community are used interchangeably. Men are expected to fulfil their duties as the “strong breadwinner” while women were expected to be submissive to their husbands and tend to the home and children (Benokraitis, 2015). Girls are taught to cook, clean, and care for the home, while boys are taught to be independent, vocal and financially stable. A husband does not feel the need to help in the domestic realm, as he is socialized into believing that it is not his responsibility. Religious affiliation plays an extensive role on many of the beliefs held by my family and culture. Many of the views I’ve previously held regarding gender roles have changed over the years.

It was also believed that the role of male is always as a leader. Males are considered to be have leadership qualities. In the Middle East, males were always the leaders of home in the past, even in under developed or developing countries, male lead the family. So traditionally, it was conceptualized that the role of the male is only to provide money or financial support to the house. It was also considered the duty of male to take the important family decisions.

The men don’t usually work and are expected to watch the children (hence the term “housebound”) so they don’t have any access to money. They are made to be fully dependent on their woman. Even when engaging in sexual activity there are permissible positions and others that are regarded as dirty or deviant because the man is in control, which is unacceptable. It’s very interesting because the same can be said of modern society today. Women often have little access to financial means and have long since been expected to stay home with the children and let the husband work. This can actually be better explained when looked at on the macro-level. Though this book isn’t about a nation it’s fairly well-spread and established that women are in control of everything. There are some societies that differ in the treatment of men but it’s still a matriarchal situation.

It is the society which gives higher value to men than women from birth. Most of the time, women, blame the men for having more control, more power, and being “The Perfect One”. However, it is not actually the men’s fault whom we should blame first, because it is the society which puts man over woman.

Some cultures view men as being in charge and women are not allowed to make any family decisions.

In traditional Chinese culture, women were inferior to men. They were not allowed to make any decisions concerning their families. Their only purpose in life was to stay home and take care of the households. "A woman's duties are to cook the five grains, heat the wine, look after her parents-in-law, make clothes, and that's all! ...she must follow the `three submissions.' When she is young, she must submit to her parents. After her marriage, she must submit to her husband. When she is widowed, she must submit to her son. These are the rules of propriety." Throughout history every civilization has looked to the stars and pondered their existence. While never truly reaching an understanding of their purpose on this lonely blue planet we call earth, they have constantly strived to further their understanding of the world and it’s mysteries. The men were in charge of all the physical labor while the mother was in charge of running errands with the children. In fact, the story also states that the father and brother relied on the women who rented out the property to give them water. This exemplifies, the social norms the are placed among both men and women. Within societies perspective, men are the breadwinners and the ones in charge of handling any tough physical labor. On the other hand, the role of a woman generally speaking is that of a housewife or a caregiver, sometimes being a schoolteacher.

Overall, girls get poorer education than boys, and become less aware of the world around them. Therefore, they become dependent on men, whether it is the father, the husband or the son.
