This past Friday the Odette School of Business, at the University of Windsor, held the Richard Peddie High School Debate Tournament. The Richard Peddie High School Debate Tournament is a semi-annual invitational debate tournament for Windsor area students ranging from grades 9-12. 130 students were able to attend this semester coming from 10 schools from around the area. Students use logic and their argumentative skills to outweigh their opponent’s arguments. This year was different with the addition of motions of the last two rounds. Ethan Wuerch and Callista Gagnon took home best Junior Male and Junior Female awards respectively. As well as Marcus Deans and Mirna Eshaya were awarded Best Varsity Male and Varsity Female respectively. Assumption
Conflict is inevitable in any personal relationship or among members of any group. While we encounter many types of conflict in our lifetime, we often look for ways to avoid conflict. So, why do we run away from dealing with our conflict? It is often because many of us fear the conflict will escalate into a situation we will not be able to sustain. “As conflicts escalate, they go through certain incremental transformations. It’s shaping up to be a trying year for the NCAA as two former athletes have come forward in the past week and filed a class action lawsuit against them for “academic fraud in its members schools’ athletic programs.” While some think this couldn’t get worse, from the numerous unacknowledged complaints from over the last century, a large number of the student athletes on the receiving end of less than stellar educations were African-American student athletes—especially in revenue-producing sports like basketball and football.
