How are students able to afford these high tuition cost? Majority of students are forced to find any sort of work to earn income. The problem is that balancing school, work, and a personal life, is physically and mentally draining. I know from experience that working a part-time job, studying hard to keep up a 3.8 GPA, and taking care my family is a struggle. Many of my friends who were attending college had to drop-out because they could not afford these high tuition cost and balance having a job and going to school. Since schools have no choice but to raise tuition, there are three main areas that should be taking into consideration to help students afford college. If the government stops cutting funds from education, provide more scholarships …show more content…
Like I mentioned earlier, the government can not continue to do this because it will only result in tuition to keep rising. This is affecting colleges by having them make drastic measures to reduce cost such as cutting staff and not being able to provide high education. In addition, this is affecting students because tuitions are constantly being raised to the point where they are not able to attend or having to drop-out of college. On top of this, the high cost of tuition is discouraging young people like myself from getting a college degree. There are numerous of time where I have thought of just working a full-time job because I would not have to worry about paying high tuition fees and college loans. If tuition continues to increase, the government can expect an decrease in enrollment, and an increase in student …show more content…
FAFSA is one of the main sources that students apply for to receive federal student aid. However, there are a lot of students like myself who are not qualified to receive financial aid and are only eligible to take out loans. My high school teachers had told me that they are still paying their student loans because other bills come up which result in having to extend their loan payment. Making an extension to loans means that there is a chance of paying an charge interest which basically means the longer it takes to pay, the more money you have to owe. Also, students who have grown up in a middle class family are seen as being able to afford college. However, in today’s society, there are some middle class families that can not afford college because they do not have the extra money. One of the main issue on the FAFSA is being considered an independent student because it does not mean that they are responsible for paying their own education expenses. Also, according to fastweb (2013) it states that students “Not living with parents or not being claimed by them on tax forms does not make you an independent student…” (p.1). In order to be considered independent, student must be one of the following: 24 years old or older, married, an orphan or foster care, be a veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States or serve on active duty, have children, or be a
With this increase in tuition costs it is making a college education more and more unaffordable and putting students in more debt.
College tuition is too high. Since the demand for an education and the supply of schools are both high, cost should be low. What we see,
Just about everyone agrees that college should be more affordable. A century ago high school was becoming a necessity, not a luxury; today the same is happening to college. If college is essential for building a career and being a full participant in our democracy as high school once was, shouldn 't it be free, paid for by public dollars, and treated as a right of all members of our country? The average college graduate comes out of college with at least $60,000 in debt and if they went to an Ivy League should that shots up to upward of $100,000 all this debt before they even get their first real job (“Fast Facts”). This is the burden that students have to worry about and then they only have six months to find a job that can cover they loan payments, which can be as much as a couple thousand dollars a month and most working people can’t afford that. These days it is highly emphasized that the responsibility to educate the poor lies on the shoulders of the government. It should be, considering the significant hike in the tuition fees worldwide. In such circumstances, many intelligent and hardworking students miss out on studying in a university due to lack of funds. This not only demoralizes the student, but also has a negative impact on the society as it loses out on its future professionals.
It’s simple, we need to federally mandate a cap on tuition for both private and public institutions who receive federal funding. According to Forbes in 2011 over 900 different schools received roughly 40 billion dollars. We also need to set borrowing limits on student federal and private loans. Robert Farrington’s believes the tuition cap, should always be set at an annual 25% of the borrowing limit. If we suggest $57,500 as the potential student loan borrowing cap, then the annual tuition cap would be $14,375. This allows students to complete a 4-year degree and borrow only up to the student
The government needs to work to reduce the cost of college tuition because college is necessary in a competitive economy, tuition has become too expensive for the majority of average Americans, and the current system of financial aid is ineffective.
College tuition is a subject that I am certain is on every college student's mind. The current cost of college has become so outrageously high and so students are graduating college with what you think is a feeling of excitement for their lives starting, when in reality they are entering a pool of stress due to high amounts of debt and no job guarantees. With that being said overly expensive College Tuition is merely taking away opportunities from potential students. According to Collegefactual.com, you will see that 20 years ago the average college tuition for a student at any University was around $6,285 for the room, board, and tuition. Today, according to Niche.com, the average tuition for almost any college is over $30,000 for those same things. Today, this isn't even offered for those same colleges, we don’t even know what is actually causing the raising tuition. At this point in time, we are paying for the name. Just like clothing, we pay more for the “high end” (a.k.a the college name) items. This is an issue that not only affects college students, but people who want a good education. College tuition should be lowered because the average student debt is too high, FAFSA results can be misleading and not high enough, and there is not enough access to college for deserving students.
An article by HO, J.D says, “the National Center for education statistics reports an average tuition of 25,409 for the 2014-15 academic year at four-year colleges and universities.” It’s amazing how costly is to get an education. Where many questions, Should the amount of wealth you make determine whether you attend college or not.? Many students going college are in college debt College expenses are getting higher, every individual that is thinking of going college goes through the financial struggle. As many think of a question of how much income they need to pay college tuition.? In regrade to making their college life, usually, student tend to go school and work. although, going school and working becomes the habit but the student will have a dangerous effect on their study. They would have less time to study and take a rest. Education has given many an opportunity to change the world and taught people to saves other people lives. Now our world has doctors, pilots, engineers, scientist and much more that people are not seeing. The life cycle of humans is amazing where we lose another and get even smarter and betters. In this cycle, many have not have gotten an opportunity to show the talent because of college tuitions rising every year. There have been different college grants and some help on college fee if you are under poverty level. Education should not be compared with the price, we can buy a nice dress with a good price but we cannot buy an education at a price
Going to college may get students an education, but may cause their parents or legal guardians to lose everything they have worked for in the process. While trying to stay up to date with their student loans, they may fall behind on all their other bills. You may even lose your home because “you cannot make your mortgage payments for fear of missing a student loan payment or two” (Beauchamp and Cooper 539). They apply so much pressure on how it is important to pay off your loans that “you struggle to make your car
Increased tuitions are results of a variety of factors. Shrinkage of state budget and low endowments cause by the recession forcing colleges to make up the cost somehow (Lee). The government has increased their support during the recession. For example, in the form of Pell Grants which doubled over the years. Andrew Kelly, director of the Center on Higher Education Reform at the American Enterprise Institute, writes “... the increase of federal spending has been completely eroded by the rising tuition prices”(Bidwell). Higher tuition defeats the purpose of the federal government increasing their support.
College tuition costs more than health care, housing, and transportation; it has even risen past the inflation rate. Supposedly college should make life a little bit easier because it educates a person enough to obtain a higher paying job, this gives them the ability to support themselves. However, if tuition has risen above the everyday things that we use to get around, every day necessities to have a stable life, and the inflation rate, then it is an obvious problem that should be addressed. If this
The increased costs of tuition and fees are making it more difficult for individuals to attend college, and they are being forced to drop out, having a major impact on graduation rates. Data stated that was stated in FACT SHEET on the President’s Plan to Make College More Affordable: A , Better Bargain for the Middle Class (2015), “The average tuition at a public four-year college has increased by more than 250 percent over the past three decades, while incomes for typical families grew by only 16 percent” (“Fact Sheet”, 2015). This is causing major stress and becoming a burden on the finances of the student and their families. In order to attend college, a large percentage of students will have borrow money because of
In the 2016 presidential campaign free college tuition was highly debated. President Obama briefly talked about it as well. Tuition is one of the most expensive pieces of obtaining a higher education. US citizens deserve higher education. The people of America are ready for a change. College tuition should be free, so that more Americans can attend higher education and make something of themselves.
As college in the U.S. gets more expensive on year to year basis, it seems to become more of need or a necessity for a student to get a good job. It almost as if colleges or the higher education system as a whole is taking advantage of students by constantly raising their tuition. At some universities there tuition has risen to nearly a quarter-million dollars for a four year education. College tuition has gone up 945 percent since 1980. It is almost impossible for the average day to day, four year college student to not come out of school without any type of debt at all. It is to the point now where the only people who do come out of college without any debt, are college athletes and the top tier of the students in their high school class,
Higher education costs have been increasing at a rapid pace, faster than inflation for the economy as a whole, for the past fifty years. It started in the 1960’s when the federal government passed the Higher Education Act to increase the amount of people able to afford and attend college. Regardless of the Unites States Government efforts to increase the affordability of college, federal aid programs have not risen to expectations due to the ever-increasing college prices. To lower the price of college, the government needs to cut back on student financial spending to go only to the lowest income families and create tax incentives for families to start saving up on their own.
Going to school and trying to afford it can be a financially draining experience, and I know that from experience. Our government has made many relevant changes thus far to better support students, but much more can still be done. With rising tuition costs and not enough government aid, more and more students are forced to take out loans in order to pay for continuing education. These loans later become a huge financial burden, some totaling near $30,000. If the dream of a college education is dependent upon access and affordability, how are young people supposed to continue their education and plan a future, when the cost of tuition is through the roof? Because higher education supports our economy, the government should be expected
