Over the span of half a century, the medical profession has witnessed a catastrophic shift in the patient-physician relationship. As the manufacturing of new pharmaceuticals and the number of patients under a physician’s care continue to rise, doctor’s are finding it difficult to employ the time-honored principles listed within the Hippocratic Oath. This oath, written in 430 BC by the Greek Physician, Hippocrates, was the first document to state the responsibilities of a physician to his patient (vadscorner, pg 2). Hippocrates believed that it was the physician’s duty, as a healer, to treat the patient infected with the disease to the best of his ability, and not to treat the disease

In the article “The Hippocratic Oath of the Manger: Good or Bad Idea? ” Sean Jasso suggests that a manager is not necessary requires a professional license to practice management neither takes oaths. However, he believes that it is normal for medical doctors, lawyers, and CPAs to take the oath. The idea about whether the Hippocratic oath of manager is good or bad still stay controversial because some believe that having a professional license to practice management will minimize the failure in business. On the other side, some believes that as long as manager produce effective result within the rule of law then oath is irrelevant or not helpful. For example, Harvard Business School Scholars takes the “MBA Oath”, which was inspired by the professor Rakesh Khurana and Nitin Nohria. The example of Harvard School of Business shows readers that the business crisis could be prevent or improve by turning management to a profession like law and medicine because these professions have to take oath: not to do harm to the society and people. Although Rakesh Khurana and Nitin Nohria’s ideas of “MBA Oath” is noble, Jasso believes that it is not realistic in our society.

The Hippocratic oath (document4) is an oath all doctors take to this day. It is a pledge that all doctors take to promise that they intend on giving their patients the greatest care possible. The oath asks doctors to vow that they will be honest and confidential with their patients “I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice. I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody who asked for it nor will I make a suggestion to this effect… Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice….

The Greeks made many influences to their medical practices as well as ours today. Hippocrates was one of the many doctors at the time and he made many new discoveries in medicines which really helped people live longer and made his procedures a lot easier. He was a very trustworthy doctor. He made an oath stating that he wouldn't do anything to put his patients in harm by giving them bad medicines. Instead, he swore to do everything possible to cures patients and help make them feel better. This was known as the Hippocrates Oath (Doc 4). Both seem to focus on the idea that Hippocrates did not really write all of the Hippocratic Corpus and as well as its importance. They explain the significance of the Hippocratic Oath in particular, but also speak of Hippocrates’ medical breakthroughs. The main breakthrough referred to is his denial of religion and spirituality in relation to medical practice. By not having and religious affiliation with medicine, Hippocrates and as well as his followers, the Hippocratics, based their medical practice purely off of logic, reason, and observation. Rather than turning to the spiritual world to figure out how to cure a patient, they would refer to the areas of diet, lifestyle, and weather.

(Hendon and French, 2016) Both the Hippocratic Oath and Engineering code of ethics emphasize the importance of the duties and responsibilities of professionals in regards to the safety and health of humans, providing services within areas of expertise, being truthful, hold confidential information, and being accountable for professional services provided.

The Importance of Hippocrates in Medicine Hippocrates was a Greek doctor. Born in Cos around 460BC, Hippocrates was the most famous of Greek doctors. He wrote medical books which have helped improve medical information and remedies. Hippocrates created the Hippocratic Oath, where doctors promised to treat patients with respect and would always try to cure them of their problems. All of Hippocrates work has helped to forward medical knowledge.

Throughout the history of medicine there has always been a need for shared commitment to ideals of moral, ethical and humane practice. The Hippocratic Oath, created by a compilation of works largely based on Hippocrates, has always stood as guidelines for the conduct of physicians. The Classical oath has and continues to serve well in preserving the sanctity of the medical profession while developing a basis for the respectful treatment of patients. However, this out-dated oath is not equipped to handle the modern trials and tribulations faced by physicians and health care in general. I am curious to why there are so many edit versions of the Hippocratic oath and I can see why they described to change it generation after generation. For example, in 1993, doctors were not allowed to "use the knife". If I am abiding the oath and a patient has breast cancer what am I supposed to do? Watch my patient die knowing that there’s no treatment for cancer or I should cut out the invasive tissue, preventing it from spreading to the entire body.

A doctor takes an oath that he or she will do everything in their power to keep a patient alive. But they also take an oath that they will do whatever is in the best interest of their patient.
