Most African American thinks slavery is still causing a big issue on their society, Such as their music, their art and their own identity. Most African American still feels like they are being lied to about their past ancestor and culture, which make them feels very confused about the question of their real heritage. One of the impact the slavery had on the African American was that it brought a lot of sadness to the individual and sometimes that person ends up hating his or her self, not because of their skin color but because they feels like they are the only race who cannot find their true DNA. This destruction of slavery started from previous culture and it continued through generation, their inability to communicate as slaves, and the impact of slavery after emancipation all negatively affected African-American Culture. Kennedy, David (2002) explain, through slavery, Africans completely lost their heritage and previous culture. They were separated from their families, and cultural items such as their music which use to give them strength when their needed it. They also used their music to stay bonded each other; which were also taken away from them during slavery. Another issue the slavery left on the African American society is the lost their own sense of identity. Unfortunately, inequality has not completely ceased to exist in the United States of America. As a country, we have had a long history of injustice among our people. From the enslavement of African Americans, to the mistreatment of Native Americans on the Trail of Tears, and the subtle and sometimes overt discrimination oppressing American women today, there has been a long and continuing history of discrimination and unfair action against our fellow citizens. Slavery is seen as a blemish on American history, and the man who abolished it can be an idol to many. He is considered honest, and his image can be found on the penny and on the five-dollar. However, history is written by the victors, and Abraham Lincoln had no intention of getting rid of the institution of slavery. In a debate with Stephan A. Douglas, Lincoln said, “My first impulse would be to free all slaves, and send them to Liberia,-to their own native land.” Later on during that same debate, he said, “I have no purpose directly or indirectly to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists (Abraham Lincoln 1858).” Lincoln did not intend to abolish slavery nor was he committed to the idea, and he only changed his mind when his teleological ethics dictated him to.

Many African American men, women and even children were either stolen from their families or sold by their own people to traders who would bring them back to the United States and sold them to white plantation owners. Slavery, a term we have learned of in school growing up, is most commonly used to describe the time in American history when African Americans were taken from their homeland to America, where they were sold to white slave owners as labor workers, with the majority of these slaves being separated from their families. Like most people growing up in the American education system, we were taught that slavery started around 1501 with the Atlantic Slave Trade, and ended in 1865 after the conclusion of the Civil War when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all slaves in rebel territory were free, and later outlawing slavery with the passing of the 13th amendment. Thus, most people today have the perception that slavery has been “dead” since 1865.

The history of American Slavery has been recounted by many scholars, taking into account different perspectives. During the 1850’s an abolitionist movement began, gaining momentum to pass anti-slavery legislation. Slave owners concerned about the growing movement, decided to take the matter into their own hands and fight for their property rights. Now as historians look back and analyse slavery, many different ideologies are constituted. Slavery in America caused African families to live under brutal living condition and living under another power. In America, an African family has live under vastly different circumstance. They are forced into slavery that destroyed their national origin and religion that couldn’t be replicated in the New World. Slavery had also been present in New York from the earliest days of Dutch settlement. As their role expanded so did slavery in the city, 30 percent of its laborers were slaves. Most came from different cultures, spoke different languages, and practiced many regions. Some people I met asked me that we Africans sold other Africans into slavery and why? I will tell them well I was not born when it happened, I only learn about slavery in school not even my parents told me so I cannot provide you with genuine reason behind slavery but I do understand this that it may have some economic benefits attached to it and that is a fact, the world back then was like survival of the fittest, slavery was rampant all over the world and not only black Africans were enslaved, many ethnicities and nationalities some Europeans like Irish and Jewish have been enslaved too. You must not hold grudge against me because my ancestors sold your people into slavery, and I must also not avoid your questions even if i feel guilty about the role of my people during slavery.
