What would start as an act to protect people from the abuses of the government, would turn into one of the most oppressive periods of French History, giving it the name: Reign of Terror. The men that drove these revolts were very determined to change their world. When Marquis de Lafayette, a French noble, went to America and fought as a volunteer in the American Revolution, he was inspired by their quest for liberty. He brought this inspiration home with him, and began the French pursuit for freedom. In 1788 "absolute monarchy was collapsing... What would replace it?" (Mckay, 706). The three estates would quarrel for the next few years about how to proceed. In the end the National Assembly would form, vowing not to disband until a new constitution was born. On August 27, 1789 the National Assembly (NA) issued the: Declaration of the rights of man. By 1790 the NA would hold the power of lawmaking. Although it did not last long, the idea was there and it did bring about some type of reform. Unfortunately, Napoleon would reign and dictatorship would once again reign in France.

By the time the Constitution was put into place, America had a very well understanding and expertise in self-government. Long before independence was declared, the colonies were already functioning as governmental groups that were controlled by the people. After the Revolution had begun between January 1, 1776, and April 20, 1777, most of the thirteen states had their own constitutions already in place. Majority of the states had a governor elected by the state. The legislature itself was elected by popular vote. Every state but Pennsylvania had a bicameral legislature.

The two historical documents, Narrative of Lavinia Bell written by an anonymous author in the Montreal Gazette and the Letter to an English Abolitionist by James Henry Hammond, shared their strong opinions on the important issue of slavery. These documents were written in the 1800’s during an era of progressive changes. One can identify similarities and many differences in their opinions, motives, and goals for their writings. I believe Bell’s account was written to show the perspective of slaves’ brutal view, compared to Hammond’s letter justifying slavery and the rights of the slaveholders.

Immediately after the Meeting of the Estates General, the lower class people met a a tennis court, they formed what we know as the National Assembly. They took an oath, which is like a pledge, to not leave until a constitution was written and finally a constitution was written. The people attempted to present the Constitution of 1791 to the King in order for him to sign it but, he refused.I was angry that the King did not sign the Constitution because it was best for the people. The King may have not signed the Constitution that the people created but, this was a step towards a democracy because, a Constitution has been written and presented to the King.

Numerous events and people have played a great part in shaping this country of ours into what it is today, the United States of America. Choosing such events or people to talk about is no easy task since there are so many that play a key role in how this country was founded, but the three different ones that will be covered in this paper are George Washington, the Revolutionary War, and finally the Civil War.
