In the novel, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden Caulfield, the protagonist, is a 16 year old boy who faces many challenges emotionally and can be considered a “lone wolf”. Physically, teenagers become taller, their shoe sizes get bigger, and they grow out of all their clothes, but what does it mean to be a teenager emotionally? Holden faces many emotional challenges such as coping with the loss of his younger brother, flunking out of high school, and having a distant relationship with his family. These challenges cause Holden to become hostile and depressed. Salinger uses Holden as an example for what it means to be a typical teenager and although every teenager is different, they struggle with having relationships with others, deal with peer pressure and fitting in, and need a parent figure in their life. Most people, young or old, know how hard it can be to make friends and have connections with people. One of the main experiences that a teenager goes through is having relationships and friendships with other people. In the novel, Holden has a hard time keeping friends and people in his life that he can turn to. Holden goes to a small private school, called Pencey Prep, and has two roommates, Stradlater, and Ackley. Although they are roommates, at times they are not the best of friends. Holden tends to say or do something that makes them upset with him and weakens the connection between them. We see this when Holden and Stradlater are talking in their room
