While a distinction between fine art and illustration is often made, the work of Winslow Homer certainly appears to bridge the two. When comparing Homer's engravings to his paintings the artistic intent of his work is evident. Often Homer would take an engraving and develop it further as an oil painting. However, Homer occasionally would reverse this process. This interchangeability between a wood engraving, intended for mass reproduction, and oil painting reveals that regardless of medium Homer's artwork had substance. As an artist Homer had a clear message that he wanted expressed through each of his creations. This intention is what makes his images more than simply illustrations. As Albert Dorne stated “The form in which an artist …show more content…
"These images of boys at play, exuberant celebrations of childhood to be sure, also embody Homer's own observations on problems of social dynamics.”(Wierich 40). The point of the game is not simply remaining part of the whip. The possibility of breaking away and becoming independent from the chain is what add the excitement. “The boys learn through experience, and symbolically, in the game, those snapped from the whip are flung out of community, a playful “dry run” at growing up and going off on their own.” (Prown #). Homer's criticism of these dynamics would be especially relevant the years following the Civil War. Previous to this painting and engraving the Confederate states declared secession during the Civil War. A correlation between the confederate states and the boys being thrown off of the human whip can certainly be made. The use of children to allude to the war also emphasizes the stark contrast of what the previous generation of children had to endure. The detachment of the two boys from the rest of the group is accentuated through multiple formal elements in both iterations. The most obvious difference between the oil painting and woodblock engraving is the color. The sentimentality that is contained the original oil painting is partially conveyed through its use of color. The warm color palette that Homer chose to use contrasts the social criticism

Griffith is a prime example of how the same piece of art has a different meaning to everyone who views
Art is a particular form of social consciousness and of human activities, an important way for people to perceive, discover and improve life: according to the laws of beauty. It is the creation of tangible or intangible products containing great values of thought-aesthetics, cultural character, and emotions. In this sense, there are numerous types of art. Painting is one of the oldest forms of art on earth. From prehistoric times, artists not only used it to communicate, but they also used painting to entertain the viewers. Painting can be transformed, eliminating the tedium, fatigue, and stress in daily tasks to bring the joy. Fun in life or silence for the soul. In other words, painting is a language that communicates an artist 's ideas
Secondly, the light and colors help to enhance the piece. Due to the oil painting,
In the “Odyssey”, Odysseus goes through obstacles throughout the book that a normal man couldn’t subside. One example is in book 9, his main obstacle that he is trying to face is to escape from being held hostage in a cave by a Cyclops better known as Polyphemus. Odysseus is a archetypal hero, he is also a role model, with an ambition to get to his homeland Ithaca. He goes through resisting temptation and using his intellect and physical strength to get him there, no matter the obstacle nor the negative flaws that he faces. Odysseus put himself and his men in that situation by being curious and wanting to know what kind of land his ship and the winds led him to. This was selfish of him because it cost him some of his men, but a leader and hero has to play that role and some lives will be dealt with on the way. Odysseus says, “The rest of you will stay here while I go with my ship and crew on reconnaissance. I want to find out what those men are like, Wild savages with no sense of right or wrong Or hospitable folk who fear the gods” (Homer 429). Saying this quote alone makes Odysseus a humble man due to the fact that not even a piece of land is going to slow him down on his journey back home.
Sappho’s poem, entitled Fragment 16, is of the lyrical style instead of the epic style we are used to in Homer’s Iliad. The lyrical style of poetry got its name because it was usually accompanied by a lyre while it was recited. It also was used to express more emotion rather than telling a story. This form of poetry seems to be more artistic rather than the story telling of epic poetry of the time. In this poem we are able to use the comparison of different imagery to understand a common theme within the poem itself. The reason for the interesting title of the poem is because most of Sappho’s poetry is now only found in fragmented forms. Most of Sappho’s writing is from 600 B.C.E.
This quote is from the time Odysseus is trapped on an island by the nymph Calypso for nine years. These powerful words portray clearly the pain that Odysseus bears within him thus giving the reader a fuller understanding of the story and his character.
One other difference between the movie and painting is the picture hanging up on the wall. In the film, the picture is distinctly a horse, but in the painting, the picture is a blurred blue and grey image which makes it impossible to tell what it
Thucydides and Homer, though they lived a relatively short 300 years apart, wrote about very different Greek cultures. While the Greeks who Homer wrote about in The Iliad were, in many respects, dissimilar to the Greeks in Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War, this stands in marked contrast to the profound similarities that exist between contemporary cultures and those that Thucydides wrote of. There are, however, similarities between modern cultures and those in Homer’s writing, as well as differences between modern ones and those in Thucydides’ writing. Thucydides’ history is, therefore, a relational bridge between the cultures of ancient Greece and modern ones.
Homer and Ovid are two of the oldest, most influential poets that have ever lived. Although they are both poets, they have several differences in their writings. Homer, a Greek poet, is most famous for his epic poems Iliad and Odyssey. Ovid, a Roman poet, is most famous for Metamorphoses a 15 book poem containing over 250 myths. To compare and contrast these two poets and their writing styles, I will use Achilles’ battle with Hector in Homer’s Iliad book 22 and compare it with Achilles’ battle with Cycnus in Ovid’s Metamorphoses book 12. The comparison of these battles will give us a better understanding of these poets different views on the Trojan War.
It's really, really, really big and spacey - just like in the books. The stars were shining so bright, Ash couldn't help, but compare them to Christmas lights. The galaxy itself was so empty and quiet, filled with many wonders. It was quite a sight.
For many centuries, the question of who composed the Iliad and the Odyssey was almost forgotten. Then, in 1795, German scholar Friedrich August Wolf revived the issue. He said archaeologists had no evidence that the Greeks knew how to write when Homer was supposed to have lived. Wolf argued that such long poems as the Iliad and the Odyssey could not have been composed without the knowledge of writing. He led a school of critics called analysts, who developed a theory that Homer never existed. They believed the Iliad and the Odyssey were collections of short songs by several poets. The analysts insisted that inconsistencies in the stories and variations in language showed many authors were involved.
“Snap the Whip” is an oil painting on canvas, created by the American artist Winslow Homer. Although the exact month and place where this art was created are unknown, it was made in 1987. During the same year, this painting was created, there were important events in the history of the United States. “New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art opens”(History). “Victoria Woodhull becomes 1st woman nominated for U.S. President”(History). “Britain pays U.S. $15 M for damages during Civil War” (History). It is an artwork that illustrates happiness of the children. In the painting, eight children are holding hands while running. One child falls on the grass while another is pulling a kid. The children are playing in the front yard of a red house. In the background, there are a lot of trees and flowers. Homer painted a clear day with clouds and very blue sky. This setting integrates well with the harmony of the painting.
There are some parts in the artworks that are related with each other. For example, there are bright and hue colours in the artworks, and the artists used primary colours in them. There are no uses of shadows in the cotton picker’s artwork. The use of plants in the paintings makes them relates with nature and free-form style art. Millet man with a hoe was made with a pen and brushes. The texture of these pieces is rough because the artists used hue colours. The use of colours in the artworks affects the quality of the art because if Homer only used the dark black colour in the cotton pickers, then viewer cannot recognize the cotton plant in the painting. Both are medium style paintings made with oil on canvas. The culture is different in the paintings. The cotton picker is related with American culture and the man with a hoe is related with French culture. The main reason they are connected with each other because it shows the hard working images of peoples inside them. It does not matter what culture they are belong to. They are made in late 1800s during war time, and that is the reason they got involved in
Jan Van Eyck artistic style is very identifiable. Eyck's use of iconography, the use of symbolism in a work, occurred in a majority of his paintings. His creation of oil paint allowed him to create a detailed painting with varying textures. The use of natural lighting and vibrant colors, known as impasto, is very characteristic of Van Eyck painting.
