Culture can be defined as the characteristics, attitudes, knowledge and beliefs of a group of people, relating to language, cuisine, religion, interaction, lifestyle, and more which is learned through socialization. These aspects of cultures are what distinguishes it from others. It is interesting to explore and learn about new cultures. I will be focusing on the Mexican culture, their religion, death, family life, weddings and ….

Did you know that not all teenagers in the world get the opportunity to go to school? In the United States, teenagers and even adults are so accustomed to school being required. They are unaware that it is not like that in all parts of the world. In third-world countries, like Honduras, teenagers do not get to go to school unless they are sponsored, because they cannot afford books, school supplies, school clothes, or shoes. It is not that these teenagers in Honduras choose not to go to school, but more of the fact that they do not have the money to attend school. Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is located 14.97503° N, -86.26477° E. It is part of Central America and goes on for about 112,492 km squared. Honduras is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea. Honduras’ capital is Tegucigalpa, which is also the largest city in the country. Hispanic heritage is an important concept that surrounds my entire life. I have lived in Colombia until I turned fourteen years old. Colombia is a beautiful country in South America and consist of mostly Hispanic individuals. This culture has been important in my life because it helps define who I am and how I view the world. It was not until I moved to the United States that I began to become more aware of different ethnic groups. I grew up in a city where everyone was the same, looked the same and had the same cultural behaviors in our country.

An immigrant that is coming to the United States has the emotion and perception that draws to a country of opportunities; that will live in a country that will be friendly. However, most of the time, immigrant do not know that they are coming to live in a different culture, and because of that, they need to experience and adjustment in many ways, and an adjustment that will help them to do many things with confidence.

The main culture I will be talking about today in my interviews is the Mexican culture. The Latino culture contains many sub cultures including many South American countries and Central America. This will be an in depth interview of Mexican culture, but it is only a small fraction compared to the amount of different cultures we have in our country today.

Approximately 1 in 6 individuals are Hispanic in the United States, and the population is expected to grow to 1 in 4 by 2035 (CDC, 2015). Given that, Hispanics are the biggest minority group in the US (CDC, 2015). The leading cause of death among the Hispanic population is heart disease and cancer responsible for around 2 out of 5 deaths (CDC, 2015). Hispanics have a 50% greater chance of death resulting from diabetes or liver disease than whites (CDC, 2015). Additionally, there are 3 times as more uninsured Hispanics than whites (CDC, 2015). According to the US average, whites are 15 years older than the Latino population, so prevention will greatly benefit the health of the Latino population (CDC, 2015).

My dad was born in the small Central American nation of El Salvador, more specifically in Anamoros located on the east side of the country. He lived in the countryside so he often played with their animals, spent most of his childhood swimming in the rivers or playing soccer with his friends, and would frequently hang out with his grandparents in the afternoons. In 1980, when he was about 12 years old that all began to change, he and all those around him needed to be more cautious about their surroundings.

The land of Texas was initially owned by Spain, but became a part of Mexico when they won independence from Spain. The Mexican government allowed U.S citizens did they: promised to become citizens of Mexico and worshiped the Catholic Church. By 1825, 25,000 Americans lived in Texas in comparison to the 4,000 Tejanos, or Mexicans living in Texas. Americans living in Texas complained that they were used to governing themselves and resented taking orders from Mexican officials, that it was not suitable to them that Mexico outlawed slavery, and that all official documents were written in Spanish, a foreign language to them. The design of the flag however does have a meaning. The stars symbolize the heavens. Having fifty of the stars, represents the fifty states of the United States today. The stripes symbolize the rays of sunlight radiating from the sun. Having thirteen of the stripes, represents the thirteen colonies that proclaimed independence for Great Britain to form the United States.

Should the US have all of Texas and California or should we not have them? The US went to war with Mexico in 1846. In this war the US wanted to have the Manifest Destiny come true, so the US fought over land which is now called Texas. After the war had been fought over Texas, the US had a little later had attempted to take more land. In which, they were successful and now we call the land they fought for part of California. The US was right for going to war with Mexico for three reasons, Manifest Destiny, there was a vote on it, and Mexico attacked first.

The Hispanic population is the fastest growing minority in the United States, Hispanics or Latinos are defined as a person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Central American, or other Spanish speaking cultures. Hispanics, particularly Hispanic Americans are full of pride and vibrancy that you can’t help but notice. Today Hispanic groups are often perceived as immigrants, when in fact some group’s heritage can be traced back to the 1600’s in the western, southwest corner of what is now the United States, others groups such as Puerto Ricans were given American citizenship in 1917. “While immigrants used to make up the majority of U. S. Hispanic population today, almost two thirds were born in the U. S”(jec.senator).

As a Hispanic Studies minor being able to spend a whole year in a hispanic country is a complete dream come true. Being completely immersed in the culture I fell in love with six years ago will be able to open so many doors for me in my studies of hispanic societies. This will help increase my written and oral language abilities and my knowledge of the culture. However, I think the biggest lesson I will get out of studying abroad will be the power to be more open minded. Learning about a new culture teaches one to look at situations in a different way than they are used to. This will be useful in my dream profession as a child advocate lawyer. I will have to be able to assess the problem in as many different ways as possible to decide how the
