The evil started with Tantalus. Tantalus sired Pelops and the sons of Pelops, Thyestes and Atreus. The murder of Pelops’ bastard son Chrysippus brought down the wrath of Olympus and an ancestral curse on the House of Atreus. Demeter bore Zeus a daughter Persephone as a result of an incestuous union. The mother concealed Persephone in a subterranean cave guarded by serpents but Zeus desired her and bad-tempered and cunning transformed himself into a winged serpent to rape her, their coupling creating Dionysus, and another union between Zeus and Europa gave birth to Minos, the ruler of Crete. And so forth, from one generation to the next, the bitter legacy endured across the generations of Agamemnon, Cassandra, and Electra, and inspired the dark tragedies of Homer, Sophocles, Euripides and Aeschylus.
The windows of the large trailer had blackout shades. Night and day were much the same. A chart pinned to his wall set out the tree of the House of Atreus. As always Hartley Crane stood awed before the pantheon with its legacy of divine incest, murder, betrayal and deceit.

It was littered with papers and open books, rock fragments, brownish bones and a petrographic microscope. The only semblance of order on the desk was a digital chessboard. The current game had been in play for quite some time. One move each day. The Mieses-Reshevsky stratagem from the thirties was almost unknown. In greek culture the gods started with a war, which led to a very impact full fall, the fall of Kronos. Kronos is the king of the titans, but every king has his downfall. The king had to have his queen and Kronos's queen was his downfall. The queen didn’t stop trying for children and every time she gave birth, the child was swallowed by their father. That is until Zeus came along.
Once Zeus was fully grown he returned to his father’s realm and with the help of his mother, hoodwinked Cronus to drink an emetic that made him disgorge his children (Leadbetter). It was these children: Hades, Poseidon, Hestia, Hera and Demeter who helped Zeus wage the Titan war against Cronus. The women titans refused to help Cronus defeat the Olympians and even a few male titans helped aid the Olympians. After ten years of battles, the Olympians were able to banish the Titans into the Underworld (Titanomachy). It was after this war that Zeus seized the throne and divided the sky, the underworld, and the sea amongst him and his brothers. (Hades: the underworld, Poseidon: the sea, and Zeus: the sky.)
Zeus was the child of the Titans, Cronus and Rhea, and was the youngest of all his siblings. Cronus , Zeus’ father, had been warned that one of his children would overthrow him. Cronus knew the consequences, for he had overthrown his father, Uranus. To prevent this from

According to Edith Hamilton, it all starts when King Peleus marries Thetis a sea nymph. All the gods are in attendance, except for Eris, who was for some reason not invited. Eris is angry and decides to create an argument during the
In the beginning, it all started with the gods and goddesses Cronus (God of the Sky) and Rhea (Goddess of the Earth). They met and got married. While they were married they produced six offspring. These offspring would turn out to be some of the most famous in mythology. The offspring consisted
Hades is one of the brothers of Zeus. He is the unlucky one who got to rule the underworld. He is cruel and unforgiving. Only two have ever gone to Hades domain and returned, Hercules and Odysseus. Hades fell in love with Zeus’s daughter and devised a plan to abduct her. With Zeus’s help they succeeded in the capture of Persephone. Her mother Demeter was so enraged she cursed the Earth. She continued the curse even after she was released. It was only after her mother Rhea was allowed to see her that she let the Earth prosper (message).
In contrast to the father, the mother had a connection with their children, often leading to an overthrow of the husband. This materialistic love is easily shown in the myth of Demeter and Persephone. “ The joy of Demeter’s eternal lifetime was her daughter, Persephone, whom she had borne to Zeus “ ( Rosenberg Demeter 94). After Persephone was taken away, Demeter became infuriated and even “ withdrew her life sustaining powers,.. she broke the plows, killed oxen, and caused the earth to shrivel” ( Rosenberg Demeter 96). Seen from Demeter’s reaction to the situation, the bond between mother and child was very strong compared to that of the father. When Persephone returns, she takes comfort in her mother rather than her father. Children usually took the mother’s side and went against their father’s will. In the creation myth of the Greeks, there were two generations in which the mother wanted to protect her children from the grasps of the father. Gaea was afraid of what Uranus would do to their fearful children, and sought to protect them ( Rosenberg Creation 86). The wives of Cronus and Uranus both schemed the overthrow of their husbands,
First off the origin of Hades himself. So his parents Cronus and Rhea had three boys, but as Rhea had the children Cronus ate them for he feared that once they were older they would
“The supreme deity of Greek mythology has his lusty, tempestuous story recast in engaging fashion by Stone”(ProQuest). Zeus was thought of as the father of gods and men. While he did not make them, he protected them, and therefore was considered a father to them. He ruled over the sky and air, and controlled everything that happened in his domains from his throne on Mount Olympus. To gain his throne, he overthrew his father, Cronos, with the help of his siblings, and then dividing up the realms between him and his two elder brothers. Zeus became lord of the sky and rain, Poseidon took the title lord of the sea, and Hades became ruler of the underworld. He then banished his father to the shadowy Tartarus in the underworld. Zeus was the most
The Rape of Persephone began as a simple story of peace and unchanging atmosphere. Demeter, goddess of the earth, agriculture and fertility in general, withheld her gifts from the earth in an act of isolation and depression once she lost Persephone. Before tragedy struck, she was loved by all for providing a climate for crops to flourish year round.Persephone held the sweetest disposition and was admired by all who knew her- including the God of the dead, Hades. However, unbenounced to her and her mother, her father Zeus had agreed to the turmoil that would soon ensue. As Persephone quested for the most enchanting flower, Hades, “the lord of the dark underworld, the king of the multitudinous dead, carried her off underneath the earth, driving a
The story of Cronos, king of the Titans, was that he had four children with his wife Rhea. These Children are Hestia, Demeter, Poseidon, and Hades, all of whom he swallowed because his parents had warned that he would be overthrown by his child. When Zeus was born, Rhea hid him in Crete and tricked Cronos into swallowing a stone instead. Zeus grew up with nymphs and a goat named Amalthae. When Zeus heard what had happened to his siblings he gave Cronos poison, which forced Cronos to throw-up his brothers and sisters. A war was then fought between the two groups, and the Olympians won, and ruled over the
When Zeus and Hades retuned almost everyone had forgotten about Perculus, Diminutive and Gargantuan. But little did Zeus know Perculus had become good friends with Aphrodite (Goddess of love and beauty), and Aphrodite was wondering where he was. When she went to ask Hades where Perculus went, he panicked and made up a ridiculous lie. Then she knew something was going on. She then decided to search Hades lair. There she found Perculus, Diminutive and Gargantuan tied to a ship being prepared to be exiled. She then untied them and she then had them explain what was going on. Form there she obviously sided with the three gods. Diminutive and Gargantuan ran away to an unknown place but Aphrodite and Perculus got revenge by taking away most of Zeus education and diminishing the love life for Hades, both acts preformed by the gods.
B. suffered a lot during his time of imprisonment, though he did not go insane as quick as other captives. It was because he accidentally found himself a savior, ‘a wonderful weapon against the oppressive monotony of his own space and time’.7 What he found was a chess manual. With this book, his solitude suddenly perished! He immediately started preparing a chess-board with his sheet, and used bread for the chessmen. But it didn’t work, since he continually got confused about which piece of bread represented which chessman. Then he decided: he was going to play the games in his head. At first it was really difficult, because he had to memorize all of the positions of the chessmen. In time he got used to visualizing the chess-board and its thirty-two chessmen. He didn’t need the sheets nor the bread, for he had already reached the borders of
