Guns are supposedly used to save lives but mostly guns are used 430,000 times a year to commit crimes, but 2,000,000 to 2,500,00 times a year in self-defense to prevent deaths, rapes, assaults and other serious injuries. In 98% of the situations, the victims just brandished a gun and in only 2% of the cases was the gun actually fired, usually just as a
According to Jeffery Goldberg, guns are responsible for 30,000 deaths a year. This causes people who hear about crimes with guns involved to immediately think that the gun is the issue, but often guns are what saved the vi¬¬ctims life. Sharon Harris cited leading criminologist Gary
There have been many times where people in stores, at house and even in the streets have done self protection with the usage of guns. 9 out of 10 times a criminal is going to flee the place if he or she notices that person with a gun. A victim of rape, Kimberly Corban, ask Obama in a press conference of how she is suppose to protect herself and her children if another accident happens. Another example of how owning firearms are a key part of self protection is how they can can scare people off that put you in danger. A man from Texas, James Gerow, woke up hearing an intruder in his house. He quickly walked out of his room noticing a man wearing a dark hoodie how shouldnt have been in his house. James grabbed his gun and chased the man outside where the cops have arrived and took the criminal to the nearest prison available. Therefore, many people use guns to protect themselves. James used the gun for self protection and he did not shoot at the intruder. This means if the usage of guns is taken away from the people that live in the United States how are they suppose to protect
Guns are like pencils. They could be used to write a chemical equation in order to cure ailments or used to spin tall-tales wreaking havoc. In the article “14-year-Old Boy Shoots Armed Intruder in Home”, by Richard Nance using information from the Associated Press, the article deems this child a hero. On Saturday, June 23, 2012, “ a 14-year-old … boy”(Nance 1) safely removed his eight year old and two twelve year old siblings and “armed himself with a handgun”(Nance 3). Like a superhero, the young protector was able to shoot the man, breaking into his home, without the man harming anyone. Without the gun, this boy and his siblings may have been hurt or even worse, killed. Recently, there has been a press to ban assault weaponry. Studies
There are those people that think that if there were no firearms then there wouldn't be any violent crimes. In 2011 there were close to 33,000 Americans that were victims of gun-related deaths. According Brady campaign an average of 268 people are shot every day; in America that is 97,820 people a year. An average household with a gun is 22 times more likely to be used to kill someone or severely injure a person in a domestic homicide, suicide, or unintentional
A New Jersey woman told police of how two men tried to open her front doors of her car at the same time. In the driver seat she reached for her gun, pulled it out and screamed. The two men fled the scene. “On Feb. 3, 1997 outside a bar in Mexico a female used a gun to stop a man from raping her" (Gale 88). A college park woman shot and killed an armed assailant who tried to car-jack her in her van with her 1 year old daughter inside. These and many other examples are of how and when handguns can save your life. Because people need handguns to protect themselves, the government should not place more restriction on them.
In a survey study, it is shown that 48% of people who owns a gun purchased them for their own security (Pew Research Center) and 57% of Americans said that owning firearms was beneficial for them from becoming victims of a crime (Williams). There are responsible owners of guns who used them to protect their loved ones such as Melinda Herman in Loganville, Georgia who protected her two children during a home invasion when she grabbed her handgun and used it protect her son and daughter after a burglar broken into the home (Brumback). Herman was alone with her children and her husband was away from the home and Herman utilized lessons she learned from a firing range session and wounded the burglar in her home with several bullet rounds and the police later arrived and arrested the man after he escaped elsewhere (Brumback). In addition, another case would be that of Ronald Dixon, a Navy veteran with 2 jobs and a father who protected his 2 children and girlfriend in Canarsie, Brooklyn after a man broke into their home during a home invasion (Haberman). Dixon shot and wounded the intruder, who is a thug with a very big record of burglaries and other crimes, and was later arrested at the scene of the crime (Haberman). Not only are guns necessary for home protection, but also in the general public as well. During a
Making guns illegal will primarily disarm peaceful citizens. At the same time, criminals will always find the weapons they need to carry out their crime. This situation leaves a green light for violent criminals to attack everyone, leaving potential victims defenseless. Every day, thousands of peaceful Americans successfully use guns to defend themselves. A study conducted by Florida State University criminologist Gary Kleck found that Americans use guns defensively 2.5 million times a year based on 16 national surveys of samples of the U.S. population. Prior to Kleck 's study, thirteen other surveys indicated a range of between 800,000 to 2.5 million defensive gun uses annually. Given that there are far more gun-owning crime victims than there are gun-owning criminals and that victimization is spread out over different victims while offending is among a relatively small number of offenders, Kleck arrived at the conclusion that defensive gun uses are substantially more common than criminal gun uses (102). This claim has been repeatedly confirmed, and remains one of the most consistently supported assertions in the guns-violence research area. Through years of research, Kleck has found strong evidence that “crime victims who use guns during a crime are less likely to be injured or killed, and less likely to lose property than crime victims who adopt any other strategy, including non-resistance.”
Guns not only keep criminals away, they provide assistance for the victim during a crime. Based upon data from a 2000 study published in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology, U.S. civilians use guns to defend themselves and others from crime at least 989,883 times per year (Agresti and Smith). Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of women that use guns to protect themselves against sexual related crimes every year. Based upon these statistics and data, it is obvious that guns do more good than evil and in most cases prevent evil from even occurring.
Guns save more lives than they actually take. They are used 2.5 million times a year for self defense. They are also used 80 times more to protect lives of citizens than to actually take them. According to an article I read there was a woman named Alex who was pregnant and home alone and two men were trying to break into her house. She said her husband just recently taught her how to use the gun and she was grateful for that because when they broke in and saw that she was armed they quickly ran out of the house and were soon arrested. Also 200,000 women a year use a gun to defend themselves against sexual
34% of criminals have been scared off, injured, or captured by an armed victim. 40% had decided not to commit a crime because they “knew the victim had a gun. 69% personally knew other criminals who had been scared off or shot at by the victim. (Gun Control – Just Facts). Guns are used to protect vulnerable victims, and can scare off predators who are using guns in the wrong way. Guns should be made harder to receive so that way they are less likely to fall into the wrong hands.
Many of us have heard many times, “Guns don’t kill people on their own, it takes a person to pull the trigger.” Even if people find this statement to be true, guns are an issue that needs to be addressed. A gun is simply an easy tool that people can use and manipulate with hardly any thought. Many suggest taking away guns and promoting peace through government help while others think that the guns are what keep them safe. Situations arise everyday where people have witnessed, or know someone who has been effected by gun violence. Sadly many of the cases result in death or severe injuries. Even though this is a very controversial topic, many people would agree with the fact that guns are an easy means to commit a crime. Guns in
Self defense and guns usually don’t mix. Out of the 29,618,300 violent crimes committed between 2007 and 2011, only 235,700 victims (0.79%) protected themselves with the use or threat of a firearm. In 2010 there were 230 “justifiable gun homicides” against felons out of the
Gun is one of the most violent weapons in the world. Especially during war I and war II,gun is quiet common. The soldiers use it to kill the enemies, and the citizens use it to protect themselves. However, the world is becoming more and more peaceful, and the society is becoming more and more stable. It seems that people do not need guns any more, besides, gun is very dangerous which can help the criminals. As a result, most governments do not allow citizens to own guns. But some countries like America make a different decision. About 80 million Americans, representing half of U.S. homes, own more than 223 million guns. They argued that guns are used in self-defense. However in the recent years, people are questioning whether guns are making
While guns are useful for self-defense and things like war, they do have their problems. The biggest problem about guns are accidental deaths which
Guns are rarely used for self defense; In a nation of more than 300 million firearms, it is striking how rarely guns are used in self defense. Guns should be used to defend yourself and the people you care about, not to just go out and kill random people that do not deserve it.
