“What is cyberbullying?” you may be wondering. According to Dictionary.com, cyberbullying is “the act of harassing someone online by sending or posting mean messages, usually anonymously”.2 A strong example of cyberbullying would be a scenario in which someone at a school or place of work were to get a hold of someone’s phone number, and repeatedly send them mean or intimidating texts that cause them to become stressed, worried, angry, depressed, or even suicidal, overall having a significant negative effect on their work ethic. Another example of cyberbullying would be if someone were to take an embarrassing photo or video of a peer and spread it around through online social media, causing people to make fun of that person, or even bully them more, and overall resulting in significant negative effects on their daily life and reputation, and sometimes, in rare cases, suicide.
According to Bulent Dilmac, “bullying is defined as aggression with the intention of hurting (Kepenekci & Çınkır, 2003) and is an anti-social form of behavior that produces negative consequences (Taylor, 2006).” “Cyberbullying is defined as the repetitive use of information and communication technologies by an individual or a group in order to hurt other individuals. (Akbaba & Eroǧlu, 2013).” There have been several cases where cyberbullying causes teenagers to take their own life’s (commit suicide). It can cause individuals to suppress negative emotions within them. Lowering their self-esteem and looking at life with a sense of hopelessness. Jessica Laney was a victim of cyberbullying when she was insulted on social media.

Cyberbully: A word that you may see repeatedly in news and social media, even maybe you or your friends have been a victim of this phenomenon. A survey among 131 undergraduate students (73 female and 57 male) in a US university with an undergraduate population of less than 10000 students shows that fifty-four percent of all respondents reported knowing someone who had been cyberbullied (Walker et al.183).
Bullying has been around since the beginning of time. Parents may remember when they were kids and the bully would pick on them or their friends by stealing lunch money or just getting beat up, and that was the end of it. The victims remember the hurt, frustration, and sadness it caused. However, these days, bullying is not just happening on the playground or at the bus stop, it is happening on the Internet and on cell phones, making it possible to bully a child 24 hours a day with multiple bullies and thousands of kids watching. Cyberbullying follows children nonstop and into the safety of their house. Sometimes kids are afraid to inform their parents about the cyberbullying that they will think its there fault. Or that their parents will call the bullies parents or other parents, making the bullying worse. However, the effect and pain that comes from cyberbullying is real. People underestimate cyberbullying, just because it is happening online and not in person. Cyberbullying can lead to many different factors like drinking, and drugs, poor grades, depression, eating disorders. Many students have even taken their own lives because of another student saying something to them online. Cyberbullying has been taking place a lot more in middle and high schools because of the increased usage of social media networks and technology. Cyberbullying is worse and more harmful than traditional bullying.
( "Suicide Statistics" 2016) Cyber bullying is plays a role in suicide also because the kids who bully in schools start to post things online. According to this article, a girl killed herself because people would call her names but online told her to kill herself. ("Suicide Statistics" 2016) Social media plays a big role in school bullying. Teens say that it is easier to cyber bully then it is to bully in school. Cyberbullying is a very depressing thing that can happen to a person. In an article, “Baby Rape Sparks Outrage”, Sameer Hinduja, states that “1-in-3 children say they are cyberbullied, and about 12 percent say they have bullied others online”, (The Press Democrat). Imagine if a family member comes home depressed and is scared to tell someone what is happening to them. It may be that they got bullied at school or on the internet but can not get help. If a student gets bullied and can not get help it will eventually lead them to think about suicide, since they can not get everything off of their chest. There are not many laws on cyber bullying, which means that this social activity is allowed. Anyone can open up any type of social media and start rumors or even make fun of anybody. In the article, two- twelve-year old were cyber bullying a female classmate. They wrote on the internet rumors that their classmate had a sexually transmitted disease, which was not true. Not only that but also called her names and even wrote threats to expose personal information. Unfortunately, the bullied twelve years old ended up hanging herself and the bullies were arrested. This article is devastating because there are people out there who will put a person down and the victim ends up committing suicide is very heartbreaking. Assume this was a close friend or even family member such as sister, brother, cousin and so on, does this not make humans think about their actions before committing them. If the intentions were something else like getting attention, then make sure that the person knows what will be posted online because they may not want to deal with social media. This shows that society can make a human evil. Just by being a part of a group who is constantly putting others down or hang out with the wrong people can lead to a change in
