In 1860 he received 40% of the presidential vote, but by 1865 he became popular (Holzer, Harold.). Even though his feeling towards slavery did not change Lincoln's decision to fight. He believed it was his job as president to maintain the Union.(Abraham Lincoln). Abraham Lincoln’s strategy was to advance at the Confederates at the same time. His goal for the Union armies was to destroy opposing forces. Changing generals many times he found a general that would fight aggressively, Ulysses S. Grant. (Holzer, Harold.) Proposed in the summer of 1862 and established in January 1, 1863, the Proclamation established slaves in the South did not have to serve in the Confederacy. It also established African American people in the north to be able to serve in the Union. Nearly 200,000 African American citizens served in the Union. This gave the Union more leverage in the war to win. The Proclamation served as the pathway for the 13th amendment to emerge. If Abraham Lincoln did not sign the proclamation the Union might not have won the war, the country today would be separated into two different countries.

Abraham Lincoln was faced many of the country’s issues. He wanted to make sure that country had peace and togetherness no matter what. Finally a civil war broke out between the north and south states. He battled through the war and made the announcement that, a country would not be able to exist if it is half free and half slave. Once the war was won he was able to keep the country united.

Abraham Lincoln affects American culture today because he brought the U.S. together and united our country. He decided at a fairly young age to go out into the world to fend for himself. Without him doing that, he would not have been independent and willing to take over as president.

Lincoln did not win the nomination, but it boosted his status as a politician. He later decided to run against Douglas to become the 16th president of the United States.
