Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the 16th president of the United States. He was also known as Honest Abe and the Great Emancipator. He rose to power from humble beginnings. He spent a lot of tume working with public doing manyal labor and was known as a great story-teller among his community. Lincolnʻs first leadership role was the leader of of volunteers during the Black Hawk war. This ultimately brought him into the political realm. He was then elected into office as a state legislature of Illinois. Abraham continued to work his way up the chain of politics until he was elected as president. In his presidency he issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This eventually lead to the abolishment of slavery in the United States. Although a large

Thomas Lincoln (Abraham's father) was a farmer and carpenter. In 1816 the family moved to Indiana where seven year old Lincoln helped his father build a log cabin. Two years later the family moved and his mother fell ill and later died of a milk sickness. In 1819, his father remarried, to his new wife Sarah Bush Johnston. Having come from humble beginnings it could be said that Abraham Lincoln rose up to meet all the challenges that would greet him, and it could be argued that at the time the only person who could successfully guide the United States through the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln.
