Florence Nightingale is considered to be one of the most influential theorist in nursing history. Her ground breaking evidence based practices have lead the way in patient care. This paper will discuss her professional experience, environmental theory, philosophies and her extraordinary impact in the healthcare world.
Personal and professional background of the theorist Florence Nightingale was born to a wealthy and well educated family during the Victorian era. Nightingale’s father regarded education to be very important and she was therefore afforded an exceptional education with an emphasis in Mathematics. History books dictate that she was tutored by “James Sylvester, an important English Mathematician” (Harvard University Library Open Collections Program, n.d.). Her education in mathematics would come to great use later in her career when she would incorporate statistics to help her identify and solve problems in the hospital setting. Elements from her environmental theory, such as hand hygiene are standard practice today. It can be reasoned that Nightingale helped pave the way for evidence based practice. She used statistical data to back up and implement patient care methods that helped improve the mortality rate in hospitals.

It can be concluded that Nightingales lengthy nursing experience, her environmental theory, philosophical writings and actions have had a huge impact how health care is seen today.
