Hilma Af Klint, Swedish Pioneer 20th Century Abstract Art

On October 26, 1862, Hilma Af Klint was the fourth child born to Captain Victor af Klint and Mathilda af Klint at the Karlberg Palace in Solana, Sweden. Hilma was engaged with nature at an early age by spending time at her family’s farm during the summer, on the island of Adelson in Lake Malaren. The experience she had with nature, she grew a passion for natural forms and landscapes. It was said, “Hilma took after her father’s mathematical abilities” (Müller-Westermann, et al 2013) she was also known as curious and spiritual. She had a fascination for invisible beings. In 1896, she met four other women who had the same interest as her and the formed a group called “De Fem,” which meant “The Five” (Magnusson, Jonas). They held séances to contact higher powers from another dimension. Hilma Af Klint’s art began to change and it led her to practice, “automatic writing, meaning that she was writing without guiding the movement of the pen over the paper unconsciously. She left a will, that stipulated that her work of art was not to be shown in public for 20 years after her death. When Hilma passed away she didn’t think the world was not ready to see the spiritualist work or the occult symbolism, especially where they came from. In 1986 the Los Angeles show, the “Spiritual” in art, which was the first time the public had ever seen the work of Hilma Af Klint.
