In the book "Fahrenheit 451" Montag changes from a firefighter that burns books and houses down into a caring man the cares about people and books. In the beginning Montag was selfish. He was selfish because he had no feeling for anyone or the books he was just doing his job. Also he burns books along with people and their houses everyday in his life. Montag thinks that life is nothing but for him to have fun burning books. Although, Montag does change. He changes in several ways the first way is he meets someone. He meets Clarisse. Clarisse care about more stuff than Montag and actually has a good influence on Montag. She helps him understand more about life and what it is all about. Also, Montag starts to read a book for the first time
The conflict in the story is that Montag’s job forces him to burn books. This wasn’t a problem for him at first, but then he met a young girl. The girl seems to live an old school life, and it makes Montag question himself and his job.
As Montag walks home from work that night, he meets Clarisse McClellan, his 17 year old neighbor. Montag is at once taken aback by and drawn to the precocious girl's inquisitiveness. Clarisse loves nature, doesn't watch television, and hates cars that drive fast. She questions him steadily about his perception of the world, leaving him with the query "Are you happy?" Clarisse leaves a strong impression on Montag, and he continues to reflect on their brief encounter and her very different way of viewing the world. After some time, Montag comes to terms with his answer to Clarisse's final question. He is not happy.
In the beginning of the the story Montag’s mindset is stuck on destroying. “It was a pleasure to burn” (pg.1) stated Montag. He had never truly thought about what he was doing or the impact his actions had on people's lives. That was until he met Clarisse McClellan. She wasn’t like your average teen. She was very mature for her age and understood life and what was going on around the world. She began talking to him about being a fireman and how she wasn’t scared of him and Montag was confused “Why should you be?” (pg.11) questioned Montag. Because of this comment Montag’s mind began stirring around like an electric beater. “He saw himself in her eyes…”(pg.11). This is when Montag started to begin thinking about what he was doing. Her eyes were fixed on his face and a question came to her mind “Are you happy?”
Although Montag now knows the truth behind books, what they stand for, and why they’re hated so much Montag needed guidance he needed an objective it was until after meeting Granger he finds a new meaning. Before meeting Granger, Montag and Faber devised a plan to setup the firemen by placing books in each one of their homes. This plan went terribly bad when Montag’s last call as a firefighter was to his own house it was then and there Montag became an exile of the law. Montag forced to leave the life he once knew behind managed to escape and group up with an
“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”- Mahatma Gandhi. Fahrenheit 451 is about a man named Guy Montag who doesn’t realize it yet but is one of the most important people in his society. Ray Bradbury wrote this book to show society the change that can and will happened if we keep going the way we are going. Montag has changed through his journey in many ways. One way is Montag has changed from not caring about his wife Millie to caring if she died during the war. Secondly Montag has changed in his journey ever since he met Clarisse, and lastly Montag has changed when he started taking books, reading them, and realizing what him and the other firemen are doing is wrong.
Montag demonstrates change because he tries to change Mildred’s belief that the only point of life is to be happy. Montag is trying to Mildred that tv is not always the answer by asking if the white clown (a tv show that pretends to know you and be your family) if it really loves her. “does the white clown love you”(75). This shows change because Montag is trying to change mildred and you can only change people if you have been changed. Montag also shows he has changed because to make Mildred feel emotion. Montag shows change in this quote because he shows that feeling bad emotion is good and he tries to teach it to Mildred. Montag is talking to Mildred and he asks her when the last time she been upset about something was. “when is the last time you have been bothered you need to be bothered”(75). This shows change in Montag because it shows he knows that diversity builds
In Fahrenheit 451 Montag changes in many ways. In the beginning he is a simple man with a job as a firefighter burning houses with books. Throughout the story he begins to change and do what he feels is right, which is to steal the books and read to gain knowledge from them. Once a common man in the beginning, has a complete different view by the end of the book . The whole world was now looking at him as an awful criminal.
Montag has grown to be a smarter and a more thoughtful person. He used to be like everyone else. Unaware, dumbed down, dull, and not being able to think to the best of his ability. The government likes to keep it that way. They allow for no progressive and interesting thoughts from the citizens. That all changed when Montag met Clarisse. The odd one out that made him understand what he could really be capable of and what books could be for humanity. He started going to work, noticing what was really happening. In other words, he changed for the better. As he continues to act more “strange” then the rest of his society, they start to see him as weird and confusing. Montag goes home and yells at Mildred and her friends. “Maybe the books can get
This is when Montag starts to change. He questions himself regularly and unravels his previous knowledge of how his society should be. His revelation leads him to meet a man named Professor Faber who deals with the way the world is with knowledge of how it could be. Through sharing his knowledge with Montag, Montag detains the information and does something with it, he thinks for himself and changes the way things are. At this stage, Montag is a character that has a wish for something greater and better rather than sticking to his old ways of what is, is.
Montag looks at his house, at his wife, and he realizes he is not happy. The next day he tries to talk to Mildred about her overdose, but she does not admit that she tried to kill herself, everything was a misunderstanding. On his way to work, he meets Clarisse again, who is going to her psychiatrist. “The authorities” send her there because she is too independent and she is not sociable. Clarisse says she is afraid of kids of her age because they “kill each other”. She comes from a “peculiar” family, where they still remember the old days, when people were not so busy to be fast. People were walking more than driving and they were talking on the porch in front of the house, enjoying each other. Clarisse changes something in Montag. He feels attracted to her personality and everything around makes him question himself. Even at work he complains about things, the “Mechanical Hound” is not listening to him, like it feels about his uncertainties. Nothing is how it was supposed to be. Why he does not have
Ray Bradbury in the book Fahrenheit 451 introduces Montag and Clarisse at the beginning of the book when they meet and they were two completely different people. Clarisse was very different and did things that the society thought were wrong. She was “antisocial” and her family was different as well. Montag was a fireman, and he burned books, he thought books weren’t good and didn’t understand why care to read. They were shown as two different types of people, but as time went on Montag changed.
Montag lives with his wife with no children in the suburbs of the city. Due to this pressure and his lifestyle he starts to disagree with the burning of books. He wants to make a difference so he rebels against his society. Montag himself is a very sad person who doesn’t even know he doesn't love his wife. His job along with Captain Beatty's and the rest of their fire squad 451, is to burn books for they are considered useless and a threat.
In the beginning of the book, he found pleasure in burning. But after going through a series of events, Montag developed a new hatred for it. He is clearly not the same person he used to be. Montag has gained more confidence, courage, and knowledge whereas in the beginning he kept to himself, was skittish, and let his fears overwhelm him. Clarisse helped Montag look at the world and realize the smallest details, Captain Beatty and the environment helped Montag realize how horrible and closed-off their laws and relationships were, and Faber helped Montag gain the courage to try and change the laws.
Montag starts off as a trigger happy fireman. He is content with his life and job, he enjoys burning thing to a burnt crisp; “it was a pleasure to burn.” (1). But Montag does not stay that way. Fahrenheit 451 lets you have a front row seat of Montag’s journey from a mindless fireman to a rebel. He transforms into a knowledgeable martyr, fighting for what he believes in. Before the change, he was an insecure, quiet man, what changed him? Montag encounters many influential factors in the novel. But there were three that stood out. Clarisse, Faber, and books, all motivated Montag to steal and gain knowledge. Montag couldn’t have transformed into the person he became without them.
The protagonist in this story is Montag. Montag serves an important role in this story as he is the lead in defining this society. Montag is very confident and not scared. “At the
