Memphis Tennessee statistics report an overall downward trend in crime based on data from fourteen years with violent crime increasing. In 2012 the city violent crime rate was higher than the national violent crime rate average by 352.41%. However Memphis crime rate is still high. Memphis was ranked third most dangerous city in America in 2014. The rate is steadily increasing. (neighborhoodscouts.com) Our murder rate has sky rocketed and it is ridiculous. This generation is in an uproar for whatever reasons. There is no more fighting and living to see another day. The young boys (punks are what I call them) are so outraged and uneducated with guns. They are shooting innocent by-standers, which is always a small toddler or teenager. Not all of the youth are considered hateful and violent. Peer pressure from gangs have taken over and some kids join gangs or become followers just to fit into the “in crowd”. Teenagers like to feel like they are a part of something worthwhile to them. I think they do this so they won’t get bullied and end up becoming the bully. Everyday someone’s child is getting shot. This is bigger than what …show more content…
This story touched the hearts of the entire community. She left behind a one year old little boy. From what friends and family states, she was a fighter and strived to continue to go to school and work after having a child at such a young age. She was a student at Booker T Washington High School, which is located in one of Memphis’s hardcore neighborhoods. These murders not only affect the relatives, but the victim’s peers as well. Kids fear for their life in some instances, feeling as if they will become the next victim. This also affects how they participate in class activities. I pray that this epidemic becomes better before it gets worst because I too have two sons that I worry about daily living in Memphis,
Memphis is notoriously known for its shocking poverty rates, which are higher than the poverty rates in Shelby County for every category (2015 Memphis Poverty Fact Sheet), and that is not a good thing. Memphis is also known for its high unemployment rates and its low availability of a skilled workforce (Does Memphis Have a Fighting Chance), and that is not great, either. Finally, it is well known that Memphis has one of the highest crime rates in the country (Memphis TN: Crime Data and Crime Rates), and that just takes the cake. While it is common to focus on these negative aspects about Memphis, it is not a complete description of this multifaceted city. It is my position that there are many positive aspects to Memphis that are overlooked
Ever since the terrible tragedy at Columbine High School, there has been a numerous list of recent school shootings in America. Youth violence is a major issue in today’s society. Many people dread what causes adolescents to be so violent, committing horrible crimes.
“Forbes collected their information from the FBI Crime Statistics Database. Since 1985, the total violent crimes in the city have totaled above 8,000 each year” (Jennes). Some Memphians believe that the violence increase among the city because of the gang culture that spread across the whole city. Based on the police data, more than 12,800 documented gang members have been recognized in Memphis city. Almost 2,750 people have become a part of this culture in the past three years, which mean two to three people join every day. Additionally, many gangs that have originated in major states such as California and Chicago have been moved to Memphis, which make most of the committed crimes primarily relate to the gang culture which increased the violent crime rate by 6% last year as Jeremiah Graham and Dominique Jennes mentioned in their article about the Gang activity on the rise among Memphis youth. Most of those who joined and involved in the gang activities are youth because of the carelessness of the family. To give an illustration of what I mean let’s look at the case of the parent’s indifference, when the parental control of the child is not existing, this will lead him to the wrong way with the wrong people. “A child’s home and family are the center of development. One of the most important functions of this matrix is to provide structure and guidance in an effort to encourage and aid children in their socialization and identity development” (Stern et. al.,
Looking at the nightly news, many would believe violent crimes are at an all-time high. There is no longer just one on one violent crimes or gang violent crimes. There are court shootings, school shootings, church shootings, theater shootings, mall shootings, workplace shootings, and others. Most one on one crime is committed with an illegal gun; whereas most mass shootings are done with handguns that are purchased legally. Although, violent crimes reported on the nightly news is hard to hear or see. It has become very common to encounter this information on a daily basis. The numbers seem to be overwhelming; statistics share violent crimes are at an all-time low. While the numbers of crimes are decreasing, gun ownership
Memphis, Tennessee is listed in the top five most violent cities in America. Memphis’ homicide rate is close to two hundred and we have one more month to go before the end of 2016.
There are about 55.3 million people who die each year, but it’s only increasing. Many people, especially teens are loosing their lives on the daily. Suicide and murder have become an even bigger problem in today’s society. When someone looses their life families and friends are the ones suffering, they’re the ones who get torn apart so why would we want our own people hurting? Instead of people handling their problems like an adult or even fist fighting people are so quick to pull out a gun. One of our biggest problems is young teens trying to rep or bang something they’re not. This goes along with the BLM v’s ALM movement.
Teenage gun violence is on the rise. Gun violence has become a major problem for America. We have more privately owned guns than any other country. This could be one of the reasons that guns are being used by teens, because of the access they have to guns. The availability of guns to our youth is making the world unsafe. Although lawmakers are working on gun control laws, I wonder is the problem too far gone.
School shootings, gang violence, drive by shootings, murder, and thousands of acts of violence are committed every day. Members of our society criticize their own people for this violence while they continue to sit back and do nothing about it. These acts of violence have many contributing factors. Violence in our country today is escalating because we don't control the distribution of the guns sold. There are not enough restrictions on guns sold legally. The illegal purchase of guns through the black market is out of control. There is not enough education on the usage and storage of guns.
In 2015, Nashville, Tennessee experienced the highest rate of juvenile violence then compared to the last ten years (Bennett, 2016). In fact, Nashville far exceeded other large cities such as Oakland, California and Louisville, Kentucky (Bennett, 2016). Nashville juveniles were responsible for 75 homicides, which is twice as many as Oakland, California (Bennett, 2016). Nashville juveniles committed 215 violent crimes, with 159 of them included the use of a firearm (Bennett, 2016). These statistics are alarming and show that juvenile gang activity in Nashville is of great concern (Bennett, 2016). Nashville’s Metro Police have concluded that youths today are using guns as way to resolve disagreements, rather than what has typically been accomplished, in the past, through fist fights (Bennett, 2016).
the FBI's newest crime report puts Memphis as the second most violent city in the United States.
Data consistently shows that Southern U.S. has higher violent-crime rates than other regions of the United States (Anderson, 2001). The heat hypothesis and the southern culture of honor hypothesis are among the many explanations for the high violence rates in the south. The heat hypothesis claims, heat increases aggressive behaviors (Anderson, 2001). However, Baron and Bell tested the hypothesis and found contradicting results. They found, high heat reduces aggression if there are other discomforting factors involved. Accordingly, Baron and Bell found, aggression increase if heat is the only discomforting variable upon a person. Cohen tested the southern “culture of honor” and found significance in the explanation. He states, crimes rates
Although no one can explain the "why" of these tragedies, recent statistics give insight into the "how": A 1990 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) survey found that one in twenty high school students had carried a gun in the past month, while a 1994 Harris poll found that only one in five students would tell a teacher if he or she knew that another student was bringing weapons to school. Where do these kids get their guns? The Harris poll found that only 43% of parents of minors keep their guns safely locked, which means that an estimated 1.2 million latchkey elementary school students can access the guns kept in their houses. The consequences of the latter statistic were brutally obvious in Jonesboro, when sixth grader Andrew Golden and eighth grader Mitchell Johnson opened fire on a crowd of students with guns taken from a glass
This project is a focus on how variables such as population, ethnicity, and income affect crime rates throughout different neighborhoods throughout a city. I feel that this information finding this information could be useful to many people. For example if you are looking to buy a new home or even start a new business, you’ll probably want it located in a safe neighborhood. This study will help identify the signs of a safe neighborhood. Knowing why crime rates are higher in some areas may also help prevent the crime rate to rise in other neighborhoods. For example, if crime rates are higher in neighborhoods with
What is motivating individuals to turn their anger out on innocent lives. Is the reason being that they are mentally ill, post-traumatic stress, or even depression. There can be numerous causes to this those were just to name a few. I do know that there are followers, people that are easily influenced, that can be manipulated to carry out vicious hate crimes on to the innocent. According to the Harvard school of public health, “One killing or shooting increases the chances that others will occur within about two weeks, an "infection" that lasts about 13 days”. This can happen even more easily deriving from that guns are that much more attainable than other countries. Estimating 270 million to 310 million firearms spread out in the United States. American population is close to 319 million, that formulates to almost one firearm for every US citizen. How are kids bringing these weapons to school? Should we hold parents to a higher standard? A lot of times weapons are owned by parents of this kids that are bringing these weapons to the schools.
