I believe that The Girl Who Fell From The Sky by Heidi Durrow is an example of following a stereotypical arc, but changing it to be something entirely different. Rachel Morse’s mother jumps off her building roof with Rachel’s younger brother and baby sister, and Rachel falls too. Rachel is moved to Oregon to live with her grandmother on her father’s side, and after meeting this women Rachel realizes that she is of mixed heritage. At school in Oregon, Rachel is constantly bullied for not being white or black enough. She finally thinks that she found someone who doesn’t care what she looks like, Anthony Miller, but she later is raped by him and learns that he didn’t love her. This follows the common arc of a traumatic childhood followed by a betrayal from a loved one, but from there on everything changes. Rachel’s Aunt Loretta dies, and her grandmother becomes an alcoholic as a result. Rachel is now being raised by her aunt’s fiance, Drew, and is able to confide in him. After Loretta’s death, Rachel still feels sad, but is now being strong and coping with her problems. At the end of the book, Brick, who saw Rachel fall and met her father, tells Rachel the story of her older brother Charles, who died before Rachel was born, and how his death impacted both of her parents in a way she didn’t understand. The book ends with Rachel finally being happy, working at the Salvation Army and feeling like she found her place in the world. Though the story seems to follow a typical story arc, it is different in how Rachel progresses throughout. Most stories like this end with the girl falling in love with a guy, but Rachel actually breaks up with her boyfriend and is content living her own life. I believe that Rachel is an example of a strong women who fought against the odds to succeed, and is now happily in control of her own
Throughout Red Glass, by Laura Resau, the characters have to overcome many changes. One character that changes dramatically is the main character, Sophie. At the beginning of the novel, Sophie is introduced as a sheltered girl, terrified of the outside world. Sophie experiences many things that influence her to become a young woman that is willing to sacrifice her safety for the people she loves. She is influenced mostly by the antagonist, Angel. Angel supports Sophie in ways that make her want to change herself. Sophie changes positively throughout the story into a strong, fearless person, and Angel’s love for her is what makes her capable of that change.
“Life After High School” by Joyce Carol Oates is a brilliant demonstration of the tragedy that follows when individuals refuse to be true to themselves. The protagonist, Sunny Burhman, must reconcile her high status and the ensuing idolization of her character with the pursuit of her hand in marriage by the antagonist, Zachary Graff, whom she does not love. As Zachary presents her with a ring, she finally realizes that she no longer can lead him on; she rejects him. He commits suicide as a result, and Sunny assumes she was the solo motive for his actions, though it is later revealed she was not. Consequently, she draws upon the reader’s pity by renouncing her cheery demeanor and devoting her life to accomplishments rather than the pursuit of
“All you can change is yourself, but sometimes that changes everything” said Gary W. Goldstein. Eliza has changed herself and her identity and that also changed her life and how she sees things now. She has a whole new perspective on life. Eliza did change herself for the better. But at some points, you could see the old her through the new her. Henry Higgins really helped her do that. No one can completely forget who they were in the past and this story is a very good example of it.
As the story progresses, so does Lizabeth. Having entered a difficult stage of her identity, Lizabeth is unsure of whether to be an innocent, carefree child, or to be a knowledgeable, aware adult. She begins to sense a change in the coming, and a feeling of end
Sal says that the story starts when her father unexpectedly makes sal go along with him to Euclid Ohio. They stop in front of a house and her father explains that this is where Margaret lives. Sal says she then sees a face in a window, a girls face. This is where her adventure begins, a tragic, wonderful, life-changing adventure. Sal explains that Phoebe’s story is in many ways the same as hers. She says that “Beneath Phoebe's story was another one. Mine.” (Creech, 3).
In the book walk two moons by Sharon creech Sal is affected internal and external. The forces sal to change first her mother leaves to Idaho random without warning. Then sal’s dad takes her from the only home she has known and moves them to Euclid ohio. Finally sal finds out that her mother will not be coming back cause she died.
Another way that Sal changes internally and externally is by meeting Phoebe. Sal changes by meeting Phoebe because she sees and goes through everything with Phoebe and she
Reading the novel She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb has led me to think about my own challenges, which helped me better comprehend the book’s themes. Throughout the story, protagonist Dolores Price deals with a variety of issues, which includes appearance, constant mistakes, and amends for those mistakes to understand her purpose in life. Although Dolores’s problems are different from mine, I could relate to her struggle. Because of this, I was able to better understand myself and the themes of transformation and coming of age.
Kristina the main character travels to her father that she hasn't seen for most of her life. Before Kristina was a golden child, she got good grade, she made good choices, and she never even thought of drugs. After the trip at her father's she was opened to the idea of drugs, boys and reckless decisions. She wasn't Kristina anymore, she was Bree. This book shows readers how easy it is to get lost into drugs and reckless choices; and the struggle of becoming herself again.
I didn't care, though. I felt so damn happy all of sudden, the way old Phoebe kept going around and around. I was damn near bawling, I felt so damn happy, if you want to know the truth. I don't know why. It was just that she looked so damn nice, the way she kept going around and around, in her blue coat and all.
This showed how much she changed because she was considered to be a bad lady or evil. Finally another person that changed in the book was Freak, he went from a know it all child to a young caring person. Before Freak met Max he would walk around always correcting people and never thinking twice about it. But in the end of the book he learns what boundaries are, and thinks about how what he says will affect others and how it will make them feel. These were a few examples of change in the
This book report is about a book that I’ve read called Cinder by Marissa Meyer. It is the first book of a four book series known as the Lunar Chronicles. MacMillan Publishing published this book on January 3 2012. The book’s genres are science fiction and romance. There are 400 pages in Cinder. It is about a cyborg named Lihn Cinder who is struggling with an unwelcoming family and accepting the prince's love. The classic fairytale slightly influence this book. I enjoyed the unexpected plot and backstory of the protagonist.
She starts drama and the bus driver tells her to stop so she does; calms down and thinks about what Raheem tells her daily that he only wants her. This story captivated my attention because of such good character traits the author includes. The characters have weaknesses as well as strengths. Raheem’s girlfriend strength is her body; I know this because this is why Raheem wants her.
Gretel, his sister, also changed. She went from being a bully to be a supportive sister and became more mature. She wasn’t interested in dolls anymore, she wanted to learn about the world.
