In A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, Salva showed that in tough times he had to overcome challenges without losing hope. When Salva had problems, or he thought that the events that were occurring weren't going as well, he stayed hopeful it would all work out. “Weeks passed, then months. One day a notice was posted at the camp's administration tent. It was a list of names, but not Salva’s. If your name was on the list, it meant that you might have a chance to go to America,” (Park, 88). Salva wanted to be on the list to go to America, but he had no luck for months. The evidence shows that Salva was frustrated that his name was not on the list, he did not lose hope. “Whenever he found himself losing hope, Salva would take a deep breath …show more content…
“The way they were treating him made Salva feel stronger still. There is no one left to help me. They think I am weak and useless.” (Park, 66) Perhaps, when Salva’s Uncle died he felt that he wouldn't survive without him. He then lost his hope because the group thought he was just a kid, useless doing nothing, and would be just another mouth to feed. “Salva lifted his head proudly, They are wrong and I will prove it.” (Park, 66) The outcome is that Salva’s group was thinking that he was useless because they think Salva won’t do anything, he lost his hope of being helped. Then he got his hopes up again. Salva was then able to prove it, that they were wrong. He slowly formed a group of his own and became the leader. At that point, he wasn’t useless and proved them wrong. After being let down and losing his hope Salva managed to regain it by telling himself that everything is okay and he will get through all the bad things that happened to …show more content…
It was the day when there was this big test and I didn’t study at all, it was for science and I had a feeling that I was going to get a bad grade. As I was looking at each of the questions I got more and more anxious because I wasn’t a fully sure if any of the questions I was answering were correct. That’s when I lost my hope or motivation. I tried my best answering each of the questions with the most detail I could. Then I crossed my fingers and tried to keep my hopes up. The test was on the computer so I checked it twice and turned it into google classroom. After two long days of waiting, the grades for the test were in. I checked it and as a result of not losing my hope, I got an A-. I knew that if I had hoped I will get through any challenge better than having no

These factors made survival possible for him since his family and friends he met had motivated him to continue on his journey, helpful people were the most helpful on the journey they may have gave him something that was the most useful, and basic needs were the most important things but were the things everyone needed to have such as a gourd which was a simple but an important product to carry water.

Salva keeps going even though he was devastated when he lost his friend Marial. Salva explained the loss of his friend as: “A cold fist seemed to grip Salva’s heart”(pg 38). He also kept going even though his uncle was shot dead. His beloved uncle who protected him, guided him, and loved him, was gone. “Now that Salva was without Uncle’s care and protection, the group’s attitude toward him changed”(pg 65). Salva faces traumatic events while crossing the river, he watches people get shot and killed. Later, Salva learned that thousands had died trying to cross the river, either drowned or shot or attacked by crocodiles (pg 79). After crossing the river only a few boys were alive, so Salva led the young boys to shelter. The boys kept walking, and walking till they found a safe
It took 648 miles to walk from Southern Sudan to Ethiopia. Salva did this on an empty stomach with no food or water. Do you think you would survive in a 100 degree weather with no food or water, with the same cloths that you been wearing for a year? Because salva did. In the book “A Long Walk to Water” written by Linda Sue park, she talks about Salva's journey that took years and years to get to safety after the war stated. The war came to his village while he was in school he had to run to the bush with not knowing where is his family or even knowing if they are alive. Salva was running from the war for 24 years before he finally found safety in the united states. He was 11 when he started to run, he met a friend along the way but he sadly died due to being eaten by a lion. He also meant his uncle along the way which help Salva gain confidence that he was going to make it out alive, but again the uncle passed away due to three men shooting him, because he was trying to keep everyone safe. In this essay I am going to prove that we can learn to never give up even if things are at the worst point possible and if you take things one step at a time you will get through whatever you are struggling with. The key aspects I am going to be talking about are how did Salva learn never give up and even when salva is at his worst he never gives up and still has hope that he is going to make it out alive. My first body paragraph I am explaining how salva never gave up.
In the book, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, Salva learns to believe in himself and not let anyone bring him down.
Salva’s uncle (Jewiir) was one of the many factors that aided him in his survival. When Jewiir, pretty much his only hope of protection and his source of
There's many factors that leads to one's survival. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park is a creative non-fiction story about the life of one of the Lost Boys from South Sudan during the Second Sudanese Civil War; whose name is Salva. His journey wasn't the easiest in fact he was at risk for dying at any given second. There were multiple factors contributing to his survival, his uncle, determination, and physical resources. Salva's uncle was one of the main factors. He gave Salva the will to go on so he doesn't lose sight of what's important. Traveling across the hot dense desert isn't easy. Given the circumstances survival wasn't likely. But Salva proved that with willpower the toughest challenges can be overcome. While
Imagine if you had to survive swimming in crocodile infested water or even sleeping in lion territory. Savla has gone through multiple task to survive in the wild to later then help other people by giving them a water supply.Linda Sue Park’s book A Long Walk to Water, Salva has survived because of his connections, perseverance, and luck.
The second survival factor that made survival possible for Salva was Uncle Jewiir’s advice. Not only was his advice a survival factor, but he himself was a survival factor. While Salva was crossing the desert in chapter 7 he found himself losing hope. But Uncle Jewiir didn’t let that happen. He made sure to stay by Salva’s side when he needed somebody for comfort and he gave advice. According to chapter 7 (page 41), it states that “If it hadn’t been Uncle, Salva might have gone crazy with fear. Uncle spoke to him all morning in a steady, low voice.” This shows us that Salva was afraid of the lions and he needed someone to comfort him. This also shows that without Uncle Jewiir Salva would probably be long gone. It also says in chapter 9 (page 53) that “As if by magic, Uncle was suddenly at his side. “Salva Mawien Dut Ariik!” he said, using Salva’s full name, loud and clear. Salva lifted his head, the sobs interrupted by surprise. “Do you see that group of bushes?” Uncle said, pointing. You need to only walk as far as those bushes. Can you do that, Salva Mawien Dut Ariik?” This shows us that Uncle Jewiir’s advice helped him a lot and what Uncle was trying to imply to Salva was to take a step at a time instead of taking it all in one time. Not only did Uncle Jewiir’s advice help now, but years later too. He was
