In A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, Salva showed that in tough times he had to overcome challenges without losing hope. When Salva had problems, or he thought that the events that were occurring weren't going as well, he stayed hopeful it would all work out. “Weeks passed, then months. One day a notice was posted at the camp's administration tent. It was a list of names, but not Salva’s. If your name was on the list, it meant that you might have a chance to go to America,” (Park, 88). Salva wanted to be on the list to go to America, but he had no luck for months. “The way they were treating him made Salva feel stronger still. There is no one left to help me. They think I am weak and useless.” (Park, 66) Perhaps, when Salva’s Uncle died he felt that he wouldn't survive without him. He then lost his hope because the group thought he was just a kid, useless doing nothing, and would be just another mouth to feed. “Salva lifted his head proudly, They are wrong and I will prove it.” (Park, 66) The outcome is that Salva’s group was thinking that he was useless because they think Salva won’t do anything, he lost his hope of being helped. Then he got his hopes up again. Salva was then able to prove it, that they were wrong. He slowly formed a group of his own and became the leader. At that point, he wasn’t useless and proved them wrong. It was the day when there was this big test and I didn’t study at all, it was for science and I had a feeling that I was going to get a bad grade. As I was looking at each of the questions I got more and more anxious because I wasn’t a fully sure if any of the questions I was answering were correct. That’s when I lost my hope or motivation. I tried my best answering each of the questions with the most detail I could. Then I crossed my fingers and tried to keep my hopes up. The test was on the computer so I checked it twice and turned it into google classroom. After two long days of waiting, the grades for the test were in.
