Let’s talk about the fact that people need to learn how to deal with their emotions, this is not currently taught in our homes or schools…. At least not to the capacity that it should be, most people do not know HOW to process their feelings and THAT needs to change.
Session began by discussing weekend events, in were R.M disclosed two stressful events and problems which occurred within the past couple of days. R.M informed me her issues surrounding her Ex-boyfriend in trying to terminate their friendship. R.M vented about the situation in a relax state by stressing past issues without any emotions or feelings. When asked, R.M informed me she is "over the relationship" and knows she deserves better stating "he was in the wrong, so I don't feel bad about ending our friendship or being truthful about my feelings". R.M and I discussed the importance of validating one's own feelings to accepting their emotions, encouraging R.M to do this more often, stating she seems happier and more content when she is expressing her true thoughts.

Attempts to define “emotion” have proved to be rather difficult. Instead of searching for a comprehensive definition, Gross (2011) describes the three core features of emotions. First, emotions occur when an individual decides that a situation is relevant to his or her goals. Second, emotions are multi-faceted, and involve both subjective and physiological experiences, as well as behaviors. The third feature involves the authoritative nature of emotions. They have the powerful ability to interrupt ongoing processes, assert their priority over other activities, and force their way into awareness. Having a conversation with two parties that are able to do this is ideal and leads to quicker resolutions and the ability to be creative in solutions. Sounds so easy, but any times this is not the case as one of the parties in the conversation can’t or don’t read the other emotions. From our perspective, we can help lead the conversations by knowing how we can be involved in bringing awareness to this need. And how we can ensure we are reflecting on what is being said and the feelings that are being brought into the conflict or conversation.
