The film Boyz ‘N the Hood, deals with the life of two young African Americans named Tre and Ricky. They are trying to make it out of South Central Los Angeles but face many obstacles due to poverty, crime, and violence. There are many theories that present themselves throughout the film. For example, labeling/stigma theory is a very frequent theory because it happens not only with the law and authority stigmatizing the African Americans living in South Central Los Angeles, but also with own members of the community stigmatizing others in the same community as well. Other theories that are also very frequent, are strain theory and social disorganization. Strain theory, social disorganization, and labeling/stigma theory explain a lot of what …show more content…
In the media African Americans are stigmatized as being criminals and as always up to no good and especially during those time in Los Angeles, there was a lot of police brutality and violence against them. The African American cop that pulled them over, treated Tre like a criminal and assumes that he must of been part of a gang. Due to the high crime rate and violence by African Americans in that neighborhood, Tre and Ricky are automatically stigmatized as also being criminals because of the color of their skin. Lastly, achieved stigma is seen when Doughboy’s mother assumes that he had something to do with the death of his brother Tre just because he was a drug dealer. Doughboy was never his mother's favorite and was often verbally abused by her and at a young age went to juvie for stealing food. Doughboy’s actions contributed to him being stigmatized and his mother stigmatized him because she saw him as a criminal and only assumed the worst of …show more content…
According to Agnew, strain is just something that people do not like and if a person does not like the emotions they are feeling then crime can become a way of trying to get rid of those emotions. For example, the loss of Ricky is the removal of a positive stimulus for Doughboy and his way of dealing with his strain was to turn to crime. Doughboy felt that the only way for him to feel better was to seek revenge on those who killed his brother. He has a behavioral adaptation to strain according to Agnew, which is when a person wants to maximize positive outcomes and minimize negative ones and this can result in a person wanting to seek revenge. Ricky was a positive stimulus in Doughboy’s life because he loved his brother and he would have done anything to protect him. Once he lost the only family who cared about him, vengeance was his way of coping with the
These issues of social control all work singularly and in tandem with each other to create a system where the young boys in Oakland mostly become self-fulfilled prophecies of criminals, drop outs, or gang members. Even I, despite my white
The film Boyz ‘n the Hood, directed by John Singleton is more than just a Hollywood blockbuster. The film incorporates numerous criminological theories and also demonstrates the concepts of conformity and deviance. This paper will analyze the characters of Tre, Ricky, Doughboy, Furious and other friends and family and show how criminological theories and the concepts of conformity and deviance play a part in their lives.
Throughout the 1992 film, “Boyz in the Hood,” John Singleton takes a closer look at urban black America in South Central Los Angeles. Doughboy, Ricky and Trey, along with their parents are chronicled from childhood to adulthood. Each person, though living in the same neighborhood chooses different paths in life. These characters were raised in a very deviant community, however there were many causes as to why they did not all become deviant. Deviance is defined as behavior that goes against what is socially acceptable. It is when a person disregards what is normal in a specific society and acts upon it. Throughout the movie these characters had many chances to engage in deviant behavior, as some did while
The four elements that take place in this theory are attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief. In regards to the movie, this theory is suitable to explain the reason why African American in the main cities like Los Angeles tend to do more crime than the other races (http://www.dailywire.com/news/7441/7-statistics-you-need-know-about-black-black-crime-aaron-bandler#). As the movie tells about mass incarceration which happened to people in color, in which they generally had families; if they get imprisoned, than the piece of attachment that stated in the theory will be missing. One among three African American has faced imprisonment, while for Caucasian, one among seventeen. Subsequently, it will also harden the family to fund themselves because it will reduce the family income or even worse, stop the economy of a family by arresting the parents or guardians of people in color. This gives an implication in the long run that caused the people of color to do more crimes compared to the whites; it is not that they are born with the higher tendency to do more crimes, it is because that the social settings the government has shaped which caused that higher
Boyz N the Hood is a painful but powerful look at the lives of African Americans, mostly male, who live in a lower-middle class neighborhood (hood) in LA. Three primary relationships is the
Discusses how race is a conceptualized concept most often through stereotypes of different groups with the presence of a systematic structure of racism where the dominant group has placed themselves as superior and all other groups are deemed inferior. This structure often produces a negative impact on same race relations. Identity, according to this theory is created due to psychological enforcement of repeated racial oppression. The movie “Boyz N’ The Hood” demonstrates the effect of this enforced systematic structure and its negative impact on same race relations which lead to the ultimate death of some of the characters in this film (Singleton,1991). The movie takes place in impoverished South Central Los Angeles and depicts scenes of violence perpetrated by gangs against the main characters of the movie. Janet Helms points out that racial theory consists of four models White Identity, Black Identity, People of Color, and the Racial interaction model. She points out that the more an individual becomes aware of the social constructs of race and the racist system the closer
Boyz in the Hood starts off with the character Tre Styles as a young man who lives in South Central, Los Angeles with his mom Rita. The social work student viewed this beginning portion of the movie portraying his young life as a social worker. The social work student noticed that Tre lived with his mother in an apartment in a rough neighborhood. Tre went to school but had problems acting out and being the class clown. Tre and the friends he hung around here had foul language and used profanity as young kids. This is just one example of how Tre’s surroundings influenced his life. According to Newman & Newman (2014), the Social Role theory suggests that a person learns behaviors from observing in their environments. Young Tre Styles learned profanity from somewhere in his rough environment and this is a method of learning socially. Rita, his mother was working on her Master’s degree and wanted better for Tre, so it is unlikely she promoted the use of profanity in her household. A contract between the two was drafter and Tre agreed with his mother that if he did not behave he would move in with his father. Rita stayed true to the contract they drafted and took Tre to live with his father Furious, so Tre could learn how to be a man.
The characters: Tre Styles and Mookie are two young African-Americans in the films “Boyz N The Hood” and “Do The Right Thing” respectively. Both films were released around the same time period, with DO THE RIGHT THING being released in 1989, and BOYZ N THE HOOD in 1991. Both films are coming of age tales for Tre and Mookie, they both reside in a low-income, predominantly black neighborhood. Both films share a common theme: the idea of hopelessness and survival as a young black male in the “hood.” Both men are a product of what can only be described as “urban decay;” they are trying to find their place in a society that doesn’t care much for their well being or success. BOYZ N THE HOOD and DO THE RIGHT THING have a common
The movie Boyz N the Hood is an illustration of how a group of early adolescents’ lives was affected negatively due to the environment they lived in. These adolescents lived in an environment where drugs, gangs, and shootings were the center of their community. Living in a predominantly African American community these adolescents were faced with many misfortunes. Ricky one of the adolescent characters I have decided to evaluate for this particular paper was faced with adversity.
In this paper, I will analysis the film Boyz N the Hood based on and around the criminology concept of the General Strain Theory. The film Boyz N the Hood depicts a story about an African-American boy growing up in “the hood” of South Central LA. South Central is a place where on average 1 out of 21 African American men will be die as a result of “the streets”. African Americans within the African-American community are more susceptible to becoming a casualty to gang affiliation and violence. If a person makes the wrong choices in life or even if they are faced with the right circumstances that force this person to join a gang their likelihood of dying as a result dramatically increases.
The movie “Menace 2 Society” which highlights the livelihood in Watts, California and had characters that had relations with many criminological theories. Watts, is an impoverished and crime reckoned neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. The movie highlights the life of Caine who is an African-American 18 year old. Although Caine graduated from high school he struggled to find ambition to go on to find a job or obtain higher education. He rather do obtain wealth by drug dealing and hang out with peers in his neighborhood. Most of his friends were no strangers to experiencing crime as crime rate was high in Watts. Some of them would go out and commit murder. Because how bad the living is in his neighborhood, he has thoughts of moving out. During my analyzation of the characters and their actions in the movie, I’ve related them to the criminological theories of social strain theory, social learning theory and Self-control theory.
Robert Agnew’s strain theory states that there are many strains and stresses in ones lives which could influence the likelihood of one committing a crime. The strain theory suggests there are two main factors that could influence ones decision to commit crimes. The first is the exhibition of a negative stimulus; this could include a traumatic event or abuse. The second being the deprivation of a positive stimulus, this could be the death of a loved one or failed plans. The strain theory has a list of strains which may influence deviance; these include child abuse, criminal victimisation, homelessness, failing at achieving planned life aims.
Although some positive findings come out, studies provide less support for the idea that a range of other factors conditions adaptations to strain. This finding may occur because the methodology of using an interaction term is too crude to capture the complex way in which strain is conditioned by individual and social factors (Agnew, 2013). Another possibility is that the conditioning variables identified by Agnew mainly have direct effects on criminal behavior rather than coming into play mainly when a person is under strain. There is also evidence that the combination of strain and anger increases the risk of criminal conduct. According to Mazzerolle and Piquero, what remains to be clarified is whether strain creates anger, which then
The two theories I chose are The Social Disorganization Theory and The Strain Theory. Social Disorganization theory was created by Clifford R. Shaw and Henry D. McKay. They wanted to know why certain areas in certain communities were continuously high in crime year after year. They found that the change or high turnover disrupted the community and caused the communities to be unstable. Social Disorganization Theory has two main sections, the three causes of neighborhood deterioration and the zones model.
The general strain theory is a theory Robert Agnew developed. The theory is based that young individuals understand socially desired goals, but strain provides no or lack thereof an opportunity to achieve these goals. These strains are likely to lead to crimes. Robert Agnew identified several types of strain an individual goes through while attempting one's goals. The deviance producing strains includes failure to attain a goal successfully, a positive stimulus is removed, and to intimidate a person with some sort of negative stimuli.
