Chris McCandless is seen by a lot of people as an idol and a hero, but also as a coward and as a selfish and a foolish boy. He is a very complex person drawn mostly by anger and fear of commitment. Chris McCandless is a person with strong morals and a great sense of determination, with his origins being from a wealthy family he abandons everything he owns and runs away in pursuit of a life without a commitment to other people, and walks into the wilderness alone. Unlike Chris, I don't have a strong moral code, even though I do have morals. I am determined but at the same time, I adapt to other people and try to understand them. McCandless is known as a stubborn and strong-willed person, who isn't afraid of anything. He chooses his beliefs over everything and doesn't let his feelings slip. McCandless is an interesting person but is not as complicated as he seems. He is a boy who grew up in a wealthy family that values material success over happiness and satisfaction in life. He grows up seeing these materialistic people up close, how narrow-minded and how simple they are. This leads to him hating everything that is associated with his parents. I really sympathise with McCandless’ ideas of complete freedom, but at the same time I think he is a coward. Even though I am scared of those things I try to face my fear, I still become attached to people and I let myself be even if it makes me scared. McCandless on the other hand runs away from that fear his whole life. People think he is brave, but he would think that everyone who lives the life he abandoned is brave to him. That obsessive fear of commitment killed him, because he was happy in Alaska until he realized he is trapped, and because of that fear he didn’t try to escape, he lost his sanity to it and that is why I think he didn’t eat the right
Chris McCandless was in no way, perfect, but he was passionate for his beliefs and had the courage to follow through with his dreams.
Many people have read the story “Into the Wild” By Jon Krakauer, when mentioning the name Chris McCandless he is either viewed as hero or as a dumb man. The people who view him as a hero tend to believe that he was determined enough to want to do something. Others view him as an idiot who just wanted attention. Him being unprepared and not knowing much about how to survive in the wild made McCandless an idiot, the dumb jerk. Also causing him to be a poor role model to multiple people causing them to end up in dangerous situations that could be threatening to their lives.
Christopher McCandless is seen by many individuals as an inspiration, an inspiration to not be afraid. “Chris was fearless even when he was little.”(Walt McCandless) Chris’s father made a comment about how he believed Chris was fearless, Chris was a fearless individual even was he was just a young boy, he showed how he was fearless and brave, his strong character was acknowledged as a young age by his father and his family. How many people have packed up a few of their belongings and just took a journey into the wild? Chris did and he took nothing along just what he could carry on his back, he proved to many individuals that all you really need is yourself to get you through the tough situations that you will encounter along they way.
McCandless was his own person he did what he wanted not caring about what anyone thought, well at least it seemed like he didn’t care. In my opinion I would consider Chris as being overly confident, going into the wild was the biggest risk Chris took. He knew he did not have the right equipment to survive out in the wild but from his knowledge he thought he could have. McCandless risked everything just to live in the wild, overconfident, thinking he could survive some where he was not used to.
Chris McCandless to me was a very intelligent but stubborn man. He didn’t care about how his family felt. All along his quest to the stampede trail Chris was kind to strangers and others but neglected the fact that his family back home worried about him. In the end Chris became at one with nature but realized that his surroundings (meaning family
Throughout the book, Chris McCandless demonstrated qualities of a self absorbed, selfish person. From the way he thinks about himself as higher than the law, to the way he shows no empathy, compassion or care towards others feelings, we can immediately tell he is egotistical. Chris McCandless shows us how inherently selfish he is from the way he thinks of himself as above the law, the way he is capable of leaving friends and family with no regrets without batting an eye, and the way he uses everyone he meets along his journey before leaving them without appreciation. Being an inherently selfish individual by definition is a person who has no consideration for others around them, and does what they do purely for either personal profit
Chris doesn’t rely on others to assist him in capturing his dream. Chris does want he desires, and he does it at any moment, that is a quality I admire. Even though Chris McCandless was foolish in the sense that he abandoned his loved ones, in the end I find his actions to be brave due to the fact that Chris achieved something that every human hopes for, and that is to die a happy person. Living out our dreams, along with dying as a happy person are two things every human dreams to achieve.
Chris McCandless was a combination of being insane and sane at the same time. He was sane when it came to ordinary life, yet his ideologies and beliefs caused him to be a bit too extreme with his practices. He focused too much on the fiction of Tolstoy and Thoreau and took it too seriously. Although Chris was a straight A student, he lacked common sense. He’s planned to run away for a long time yet instead of
In the book, Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, we get an idea of who Chris McCandless really was internally along with how he expressed himself for the world to see. The author admits that McCandless was both rash and an over thinker, but he insists "he wasn't a nutcase or a sociopath…"(85). Chris McCandless, the way I see it, was extremely brave and ambitious. In some cases, he was unfortunately overconfident, which later led to his death. McCandless was a modern transcendentalist in a time where it was not socially acceptable.
Many individuals that Chris encounters on his journey see him as a mature, and hardworking man who is living the life he truly wants without looking back. And others see him as an inspiring individual who worked hard for what he wanted without giving up no matter what is put in front of him. And some select few see him as a man who just wandered into the wilderness entirely unprepared just to stay in a remote area surrounded by only himself and nature. In reality, Chris works hard to fend for himself and survive under all the circumstances put upon him. He walks countless, and almost seemingly endless miles across the Western United States, finding food on his own due to his lack of money. What Chris McCandless did was in no way easy, and even
The book “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer explains how McCandless has several characteristics such as being: reliable, idiotic, and being on his own such as being an individual. Jon Krakauer explains how each characteristic relates to Chris McCandless was throughout the book. Krakauer gave us a good perspective of the type of person McCandless was from the time he was a little kid till the time he passed away.
Chris McCandless did not live the average life. He ran away from his family on several occasions, and his actions can lead people
As people grow up, they realize the “real world” is not as pleasant as they pictured. Chris McCandless is a victim of this false advertisement. He is from a well based family background. Received a lot of attention because he is one of two children in his house. His family did not need to push Chris since he is talented in anything he tried. He is able to accomplish anything he sets his mind to. Somehow, he hates the thought of improving. He is stubborn and sticks to his idea of “right or wrong”.
He was a very kind and generous man who took care of other people instead of himself. Chris McCandless met a lot of people on his journey throughout the United States. He met three people who took care of him and cared about him. Those people wanted the best for him and they really showed their kindness.
From the book, Into The Wild, Chris McCandless was an independent man. Ever since day one, he always believed in his own morals and it didn’t matter what anyone else said. People never really understood his beliefs and would always try to change his mind right before he did something, but it didn’t bother him. Instead he would try to change their mind and pursue them into his thoughts.
