How Is Greece Different From American Culture

Introduction Cultures are different around the world. There often is multiple cultures in a country. Greece’s culture is different in many ways from other cultures, for example family, tradition and religion are three of many key factors in Greece(www.everyculture.com). Family, tradition and religion can be popular values for other cultures too, but all cultures have different values. Families in Greece are affected by poverty, religion and tradition.

When visiting different countries, it is easy to see the differences between the cultures of each place. When visiting Greece, something that stood out to me was the food and the process that it took to get it. Greeks ate at different times than Americans and finding a place to eat was a completely different process than in America. The service, food, and payment at Greek restaurants also had contrasting styles than what I was used to in the United States. Greeks and Americans both contain people who share a love for food, but the process of getting food in each country is slightly different from each other depending on the time, place, and service.

This article helps me understand how Ancient Greece has influenced our modern world so much. Some of the words and phrases that we use today are based on gods and goddesses that were in Greece. We also have many artifacts from the different city-states that are fascinating and will help us even in our state of technology

1. The Greeks had similarities and differences compared to traditional American’s and our culture. Similar to Americans, Greeks were a very entertainment based culture. They had plays, music, and texts to pass their free time, all of which most Americans typically experience in a day. Cities and towns existed, with city-states serving almost like today’s capitals of each state. Farming played a big part in their culture, which is shared with America, as farming continues to be a trade that is necessary, no matter what age. A military existed to protect their society, like America has. Religion was relatively relaxed as a subject in Greece, where they didn’t really think care too much about which gods or goddesses you worshiped - a trait somewhat

People in ancient Greek civilization thought, believed, and treated people differently than modern day Western civilization does. Although what went on in Greek culture at the time may seem very strange or different to children who have grown up in America their whole lives, that does not mean that Greek life was, by definition, strange. The Greek culture is like any culture in that it is different in its own way. It has aspects and objects that are unique to the culture that others would find interesting. Even some objects, for example: bow and arrows, swords, spears, and others, are the same objects other cultures have, yet they may look slightly different from the objects in other cultures. Ancient civilizations did not have mass manufacturing as modern day America. No weapon, item of clothing, or dish was the exact same.

Ancient Greek culture had major influences on today’s culture; some of these influences include mathematics, government, art and architecture; they even did research in the field of medicine. Many cultures and religions have adapted their ideas from the ancient Greeks. Without the influences of the ancient Greeks our society wouldn’t be the way it is today. The Greek culture lasted from around 776 BCE to 146 BCE (though it is argued to have begun around 1000 BCE), during this time they invented many technologies and refined old technologies. These things are what caused the ancient Greek culture to be such a powerful influence on western society today.

When people wonder about Ancient Greece the first thing that comes to their minds is Greek mythology; gods and goddesses that have helped shape many historical events. “In ancient Greece, stories about gods and goddesses and heroes and monsters were an important part of everyday life.” (“Greek Mythology.”) The civilization showed that numerous characters and stories helped shape Greeks. The beliefs the Greeks had with mythologies was they understood the meaning behind all the characters that are known today. However, to the Greeks, they were not just characters, these were their gods and goddesses who gave them meaning and understanding of the world around them. Worshiping the gods and goddesses helped them with their religious rituals and the temperament of the weather. A famous wine-jar that was made during this time period was “Achilles killing the Amazon Queen Penthesilea, 540-530 BCE, black-figured amphora”. (Khan Academy) The civilization that they lived in grew around their worship and achievements.

Ancient Greek culture beliefs and social ideas have helped us with American Education because it influences us with what is going on today. Ancient Greek influence affected us today with democracy, Ancient Greek actually created the world’s first democracy. Ancient Greek have helped us along with Math, History, and Literature. As a matter of fact, Ancient Greek where the first to invent new things along the years. For example, Greek where the first civilization to use the alphabet. Greek have help us over million years.

Historians have long considered Ancient Greece to be one of the most influential societies on modern day life. Ancient Greece has inspired the modern world in five main areas: theatre, government, philosophy, art, and architecture.

​There are two main periods in Greece history, Hellenic and Hellenistic period. They have some similarities but they are significantly different. Many people believe that the Classical era is the most impressive due to the success in literature, science, philosophy and architecture, which does not mean that the Ancient Greece is less significant. While in Hellenic era they saw rising and falling of the polis in Hellenistic era it was more about war and fighting for among the prevailing dynasties. The thing that they have in common is that they were consistent in discovering new philosophies and science also decreasing the role of gods.

I never thought that the Greeks wouldn’t eat much of a breakfast also i didn’t know that most of the food in Greece were imported from all around them. The foods they eat also don’t seem really different from what we would eat here. I knew very little about what they wore in Greece. I didn’t think that they wore modern clothes like us currently. There houses inside are partially the same way our houses would be like in the inside but, on the outside the houses aren’t much

The Ancient Greeks brought us achievements that shape our world that were made not by figures lost in time, but by men and women whose voices we can still hear. Science, art, literature, political science and historiography were formulated as we now know and work with them by the ancient Greeks. As Americans, we have learned and took on many ideas from the Greeks. Greeks were one of the most advanced cultures in ancient history. How Has Greek Culture and Mythology Affected American Culture? Ancient Greece gave many gifts to American culture. The earliest mathematic theorems, Thales’ theorem and Intercept theorem, both stemmed from the work of Thales of Miletus, recognized as the first of the seven wise men of Greece (“12 Gifts Ancient Greece Gave To The World”). Greeks have been in America since about 1528. Greece is located at the southeast end of Europe on the Mediterranean Sea. The first recorded Greeks colonized in Florida, which is where about 77 thousand Greeks still inhabit today as well as a majority of the East Coast. Greeks believe in a simple four-step process to being healthy and if these four basic kinds of things are in order they will be healthy but if they are out of order, illness will occur. I chose to do my research on Greeks because I had heard of the popular “Mediterranean Diet” talked about for years. I have also seen movies about Greek culture, like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but did not know all the traditions of the Greeks.
