“The Black Death” The movie series, “The Pirates of the Caribbean,” was very good for many reasons. Not only was it entertaining, it was also historically accurate. Many different factors helped the film achieve a high level of realism portraying pirate life in the 16th – 17th centuries. For example, in the movie, the character Jack Sparrow was both similar and different to the pirates that lived in real life historical times. In addition to that, the weaponry used in real pirate life was almost exactly the same to the weaponry used in the movie. Another example is that the pirate code in the movie is very similar to the real pirate codes. There were many of the same rules in the codes. Mostly the sea myths in the movie have many differences …show more content…
The pirate code in the movie states that the nine “Pirate Lords” elected pirate captains. Like in the movie some pirates voted for important affairs on Bart Roberts’s ship, but there weren’t nine lords. In the series, the pirate code also states that each crewmember got the same share of the treasure found, but it is historically accurate that captains actually got more than everyone else and they gave bonuses to boatswains, quartermasters, and other officials. Other than that all crewmembers got the same share of treasure. Also any man that is injured is left behind in the movie, but pirates actually gave injured pirates a compensation ranging from 400 to 800 pieces of eight. Like in the movie, real pirates were also marooned and left with nothing but a gun and some rum. Another accurate fact in the pirate code of the movie is that when a pirate found a ship to attack, that pirate would get the best pistol. This is a rule according to Edward Low’s pirate code. Jack Sparrow said that pirates never betray or steal from others because it was not issue on his ship. He had forbidden it, but in other pirate codes like John Phillip’s, it said that they would be marooned if a pirate betrayed or stole. Some of these movie pirate codes are very similar to real pirate
Marcus Rediker’s main point is the Atlantic Pirates were a group of highly intelligent people that unfortunately were forced to a criminal life because it was their only means to Survive. They were intelligent in the reason of choosing to attack the America colonies, but also in the way the pirates made their own governing structure. According to Dr. Rediker “a compact drawn up at the beginning of a voyage or upon election of a new captain, and agreed to by the crew. By these articles crews allocated authority, distributed plunder, and enforced discipline. These arrangements made the captain the creature of his crew”.(Rediker 209). These pirates knew that they had recently escaped a system of oppression that had done them wrong in many ways. This is why they made a system where everyone counted and where everyone got what they deserved. In a way they kept each other on check. An example of this today would be friend making sure another friend doesn’t cheat on his
The Book is written by Adrian Tinniswood. Before I read the book I think pirates are rude and violent men, after I read the book I think pirates can be romantic and living for pirates can be jolly. There is always piracy on the sea since the days of commerce. Through the history of Europe, especially in the seventeenth century, piracy become a part of European history. The pirates seemed mysterious. Even in this wonderful book, there are not many part describes the pirates, it counties to be mysterious. I think it leaves room for reader’s imagination.
Someone who robs or commits illegal violence at sea or on the shores of the sea is, by definition, a pirate. Piracy in the Age of Sails has set an image for what a pirate truly is. The collective perception of a pirate of old makes fondness for the modern pirate virtually unheard of, as they have become an excellent subject for entertainment and bring joy to many with modern interpretations of adventures undertaken by the buccaneers. Pirates have become a staple in the market, having multiple brands and products named and based on them, such as movies, liquors, video games, and music.
To begin, pirates have been prowling the seas as far back as ancient times, such as the “Phoenicians and Greeks in the Mediterranean.” As well Muslim piracy as Jihad has existed since the 17th Century along the Barbary Coast of North Africa.2 These pirates were known as Barbary corsairs, and they would attack ships from Christian countries, seizing their ships and, and selling the sailors into slavery. Today, Somali pirates are seizing ships and taking hostages for ransom along the waters off the coast of Somali and the Gulf of Aden.
For example, Captain Benjamin Hornigold’s crew deposed him for “refusing to take and plunder English Vessels.”[xii] Democracy was the primary mechanism pirates used to control their captains. Also, much like modern American democracy, pirates instituted a separation of powers to regulate the amount of control one man could have. Crews had many officers, each one dealing with a different aspect of upholding the pirate code.[xiii] One could argue that the Framers based their entire government off of the democratic checks and balance practiced by pirates. It is amazing to think that a successful model of democracy was being practiced on pirate ships more then a half century before Congress would sign the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia.
The pirates are Somalians who are raiding ships that come nearby Somalia. They carefully select a ship to raid. They will want to raid cargo ships. After they find a ship to raid, they then use force to get into the ship. The pirates carry various guns to help to get on board the ship. After they manage to get on the ship, they start to take all the valuables on the ship (Hamza Mohamed 1). They then take the workers of the ship as hostage to gain more money for their safe return. In the movie, Captain Phillips, the pirates that are in the movie are Somalians pirates (Telegraph 1).
The majority of the life of a pirate is spent at sea. Most pirates’ made their money from taking over ships of other people and selling illegal goods which were usually stolen from the ships. Pirates needed to be able to travel on sea and explore new areas, they would have encounters with the ships they are trying to capture, and they would exchange illegal goods and slaves. One infamous group of pirates, the Barbary Pirates, was so good at their job that they were seen as a threat to the major governments of the world.
The movie “Pirates of the Caribbean” illustrates a tale of adventure during the 17th century the story is happening in the Caribbean where pirates of the most active place. Main character Jack Sparrow is a charming and crafty pirate, his ship “Black Pearl” was taken away by an infamous captain, Hector Barbossa, however Barbossa and his crews are cursed after they took “Black Pearl”, the only way to break the curse is Will Turner’s blood and his coin. Jack wants his ship back so he went to Port Royal to steal the fastest ship his Majesty’s ship “Interceptor” but he saw governor’s daughter fall in to ocean and he saved her life but he was arrested after he saved Elizabeth. Nonetheless the coin was in Elizabeth Swan’s hand so Barbossa knapped
Firstly, there are a few allusions to Coleridge’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” such as the undead crew, a snake-like creature under the surface and a dice game played on board. Concepts of mortality, death and immortality are borrowed from Coleridge as well as J.M Barrie’s Peter Pan. Also, adopted from Peter Pan is the fantastical and surreal setting intermingled with a strictly historical setting. The sea in Pirates of the Caribbean functions in the same way as Neverland in Peter Pan. Lastly, many of the literary tropes of piracy that are commonplace today are from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island such as excessive rum drinking, distinct pirate speech, and buried treasure. These tropes are included, multiple times, in the first three films. In creating a movie from a non-typical source, Disney placed itself on a new path of adaptation releasing their creative licence from the strict boundaries of fairy tales and cartoon movies into a new era of
Although the history of piracy is often bloody and gruesome, it can be understood that there were certain people who actively sought a life with the pirates as a way of escaping condemnation and judgement at home. Though the pirates are commonly remembered as being quite brutal, something that escapes common knowledge is the fact that they were actually quite tolerant of minorities and marginalised people in their crew. Piracy can be seen as a haven for those suffering from religious intolerance, women who felt more comfortable in male dress, and non-heterosexual men. These were people who would have faced discrimination, imprisonment, or even death at home, but found an escape in life amongst the pirates. On pirate ships these people were openly accepted and received the same treatment as any other crew member.
Using the broad definition of piracy- the "indiscriminate taking of property (or persons) with violence on or by descent from the seas" includes privateers. It was therefore very difficult to rid the seas of pirates because privateers would be acting on behalf of the
Even though pirates are not common around the world today, the experiences and characters can relate to people of all ages. Since the characters are not
When watching “Pirates, Galleons, and Treasure: Globe Trekker”, one certainly does learn something about pirates and their history. However, that does not mean the documentary is particularly useful. In fact, the documentary while mostly accurate still has some small discrepancies and does not provide enough detail for it to be helpful to those actually studying pirates. The documentary is a fun resource for those who want basic facts, but leaves some facts to assumptions and seems to gloss over some information. It tends to focuses on myths and interesting stories that may have been true rather than the truth. More attention is also put on cities rather pirates and when it does focus on the pirates, it is not done well. It tends to
The pirate lifestyle was different. Pirates were better treated and had more freedoms and rights than normal sailors. The reason why I choose pirate lifestyle because they had many accurate facts about pirates in the movie such pirates drinking rum, stealing a boat, they were they dress and more. For example, Pirates only had rum to drink when they were on board because they did not have not enough water for the pirates on board. Rum was also easily obtained in the sugarcane rich Caribbean and olden day South Seas Pirates and that's what made rum the drink of choice which was all sown in movies when Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) was trying to escape from the ship of Black Pearl, they showed Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) drinking a bottle rum after capturing Elizabeth. The second reason why I say pirate lifestyle is accurate is that of stealing a ship. At the start of the movie when Jack Sparrow was to be hanged by the British
These new pirates are similar to their predecessors in a variety of aspects. They are split up into two groups: those who work for themselves and others who have an alliance with a government. The most famously known group is currently known as the Somali pirates. They attempted to attack and capture the U.S. cargo vessel called Maersk Alabama in April 2009. However, they were fought off, and their one hostage, the ship’s skipper, was rescued five days later (Boot, Max. “Pirates, Then and Now”). Pirate techniques of stealing and escaping have not changed either. Sea robbers continue to elude the authorities by using state and country flags to become unrecognizable. Their ships are designed to be fast and easy to maneuver through coves and channels. On the other hand, technological advances have made it easier for ordinary ocean vessels to become victims of piracy. Wooden ships with shallow bottoms and cannons were ingenious a century ago, but speedboats have become the new pirate transportation. Somali pirates tend to have a larger, ‘mother ship’ used for deep ocean assaults (May, Laura.
