Everyone in life has their own journey. Life is not based upon one ultimate goal. A good life overall depends on how you live it and what perspective it is in. For a man that does not have a home, his good life could be living in a shelter and being surrounded with people just like him. The woman who just got a promotion and is now celebrating with her fiance. From the little things in life to the “never would have thought this would be happening,” the good life all depends on the person.

For many, love is a constant search for happiness that never ends. The desire for love is longed for and pursued by every human. Many constantly seek it in self satisfaction, but are never fully satisfied with the love which they attain. The biggest reason for this is the distortion of the love which is sought for. True love is pure and selfless, the perfection of a person. It is truly something which must be cultivated in order to recognize and attain it. Academic integrity is the code of academic conduct that is set forth by educational institutions. It is the catalyst for the mission of most institutions. The expectation is that students will be honest and responsible as it pertains to academia. Prior to completing the Academic Integrity Program, I thought academic integrity was as simple “not cheating.” I considered it a policy solely implemented to ensure that students learned the material. To me, cheating was mostly plagiarism, or trying to pass off someone else’s work as your own. It was not until I completed the program that I began to understand the long-term effects of cheating on the peers, the professor, and the institution. Now, I understand that cheating affects not just me, but also the other students in my courses and the university’s reputation. Solution of cheating culture is honor codes and techniques for academic integrity which are important parts of the solution. The term “the good life” can be viewed in different ways. Although, the more powerful meaning regarding the sources would be when others are jealous of your own success. In other words, they can be considered haters. Once you reach this point, you sense accomplishments because it shows you did something with your life. More importantly, “the good life” can be lived well if you’re able to help others while you’re stable and able to treat yourself.

In philosophy, there are many understandings of the Good Life. One belief is long-term happiness is the ultimate end goal because it results in overall contentment in life, unlike the temporary state of feeling happy. Aristotle relates long-term happiness to human nature and explains that people achieve long-term happiness when they properly fulfill what is most essential to live a meaningful life. In the Road to Character, David Brooks explains that there two opposing sides of human nature that must be balanced in order to correctly attain all the things necessary to live the Good Life. The problem is many people are off balance and neglect to fulfill both sides of human nature because of the fact human nature is inherently flawed. Good Character works to overcome one’s faults by practicing character traits. The most important one being humility because it eliminates the greatest vice, pride. The Good Life is a struggle to achieve long-term happiness by developing good character and finding balance.

A goal tempted to be achieved by people all over the world is the good life. The idea of endless happiness is pleasing to everyone. Three components found in achieving the good life is an intensive feeling of affection a person feels, when their heart starts racing when they see something they love. Feeling belonged in a society helps a person feel connected and less lonely, and significance to the world and to the people, feeling that one was put on this earth to make a change. In an individual’s life love, status and significance to the world and one another, are the basic components in making the good life achievable.

There is no doubt that people will then try different means in order to pursue a happy life based on their definition toward what a happy life is. Therefore, the following will talk about the pursuit of a happy life from the perspectives of both Dalai Lama in The Art of Happiness and Viktor E. Frankl in Man’s Searching for Meaning, during which the experiences of some characters from the film Forrest Gump will be applied as evidence. Generally speaking, the pursuit of a happy life in the minds of Dalai Lama and Viktor E. Frankl can be achieved via experiencing sufferings and adversity. It is hoped that this analysis can help people understand what a happy is from a different point of view.
