The Falsehood of Resilience
The article How Kids Learn Resilience is written by Paul Tough and she confesses “for all our talk about non-cognitive skills, nobody has yet found a reliable way to teach kids to be grittier or more resilient” (Tough 3). A new idea is developing that these characteristics are not found in teaching but through environmental forces inside the classroom and at home. In the article researchers, economists, American schools, and teachers showcase how grit and resilience can be placed in the minds of young children and in the middle and high school stages. In comparison, this viewpoint alternated my opinion as Dante Cicchetti displays “research on the determinants of resilience in maltreated children is presented as an illustration of empirical work that is moving from single-level to multilevel investigations of competent functioning in the face of adversity and trauma”.
For many different intellectuals in this article feel as though “all our talk about noncognitive skills, nobody has yet found a reliable way to teach kids to be grittier or more resilient” (3). As a result, Paul Tough does not build a logical argument because nobody can determine how a person obtains grittiness.
Due to this topic being so broad, there is no definite answer to how an individual can truly learn resilience. Also, in the article How Kids Learn Resilience Paul Tough emphasizes the point that non-cognitive traits like grit, self-regulation, optimism, and resilience simply cannot be taught. In this case, I agree but on the other hand, she reveals that it is being built through student-centered environments, which include both a sense of belonging and academic
