Introduction

I decided that I would research how leadership can be identified and developed.
The focus of this study is on the student athletes and not the coaches, however. The study focuses on how we can identify leaders, develop leaders and at a high level. This is all beneficial to the success of sports teams at any level. When it comes to identifying leaders the study focuses on three components. The first is how he or she is perceived by teammates. The second is the type of leader the individual is. Are they an emotional, social task or external leader and does that make a difference on how they are perceived as leaders. If we can develop a group to be leaders they help create leaders. Leaders develop leaders is at the core of my philosophy. Therefore, I can continue to develop my philosophy from my study. Secondly, I enjoy learning about leadership. I think it is not an exact science and no one person can create a perfect leader. However, the more we study it and the more familiar we are with the traits and identifying potential leaders the better off we are at developing them. In order to make a program successful whether it is a team or athletic department leadership is a must and developing those leaders are crucial. I chose this topic because our athletic department has struggled in the past few years. The only sport that is consistently good is football. Our league the Western Buckeye League has a trophy given to the best athletic department based on where the teams finish in each sport in the league. Over the past forty-five years, Kenton has finished no higher than seventh. From my observation I believe this is from our lack of leadership from our head coaches and their lack of ability to develop leaders on their own teams.
Findings
The findings from the study varied from the hypothesis created by Franson et & al (2015). In aim 1 the study concluded that the two major leadership components were social and emotional leaders. The stronger the leader connected with its followers the better response or more followers they would accumulate (Fransen et & al, 2015). It
