Introduction
I decided that I would research how leadership can be identified and developed.
The focus of this study is on the student athletes and not the coaches, however. The study focuses on how we can identify leaders, develop leaders and at a high level. This is all beneficial to the success of sports teams at any level. When it comes to identifying leaders the study focuses on three components. The first is how he or she is perceived by teammates. The second is the type of leader the individual is. Are they an emotional, social task or external leader and does that make a difference on how they are perceived as leaders. Finally the last aim is to look at the team’s chemistry and if that has an impact on how the leader is perceived.

If we can develop a group to be leaders they help create leaders. Leaders develop leaders is at the core of my philosophy. Therefore, I can continue to develop my philosophy from my study. Secondly, I enjoy learning about leadership. I think it is not an exact science and no one person can create a perfect leader. However, the more we study it and the more familiar we are with the traits and identifying potential leaders the better off we are at developing them. In order to make a program successful whether it is a team or athletic department leadership is a must and developing those leaders are crucial. I chose this topic because our athletic department has struggled in the past few years. The only sport that is consistently good is football. Our league the Western Buckeye League has a trophy given to the best athletic department based on where the teams finish in each sport in the league. Over the past forty-five years, Kenton has finished no higher than seventh. From my observation I believe this is from our lack of leadership from our head coaches and their lack of ability to develop leaders on their own teams.
Findings
The findings from the study varied from the hypothesis created by Franson et & al (2015). In aim 1 the study concluded that the two major leadership components were social and emotional leaders. Sports management is a really broad field, therefore I decided to focus on my minor and one of my major interests of this field: coaching. In this paper I will be explaining my personal five building blocks that make up a well-rounded coaching philosophy and coach. According to the textbook, Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice, there are over 100 definitions of the word “leadership”, and all of them are unique in their own way (Northouse, 2015, p.1). There are so many different aspects to leadership that is it nearly impossible to have one definition that covers every area. Each and every person that is a considered a leader has his or her own way of leading because every situation, whether it be work, a team, at home, etc., calls for different and distinctive ways of leading people. Northouse states that there are six main aspects of leadership; it’s a trait, ability, skill, behavior, relationship, and an influential process (Northouse, p. 3-6). Giving a clear answer as to what leadership is defined as is very difficult, but this paper will talk about my specific leadership skills and what leadership means to me.
At their finest, coaches perfect their player’s flaws to push them to their potential ability, improve their skills, and create determination within the team. They can expand the importance of such a sport to intensify motivation and the value of good sportsmanship for the sake of not only their reputation, but the outcome that comes from it. Coaches must not lag when it comes to hardships that comes about; they must stay connected. The closer the connection between a player and a coach the better they are moving forward and continuing on the love of the sport and job.
Sports make people come close together like family,” because of the opportunity to train, try, win, or lose together.”( The Mental Benefits of Sports, Kathryn Watson, para. 8) Winning and losing as a team is very important to learn how to do. Everyone has to work as a group in something of their life and no one wants to work with a sore loser or winner. Leadership qualities can, “range from being a good character, to respecting others, to being task oriented can be accomplished in both team and individual sports,” because of that “team mindset” ability.(What Do Youth Sports Teach Our Children Really? Suzanne Pish, Michigan State University, para. 6) The “team mindset” is a key thing to strengthen leadership qualities. Leaders are what makes up teams or groups of people or student athletes. Something to improve leadership is, “encouraging and inspiring team members to attain their own personal goals and reach their potential can help you become a better leader.”(Goals to Increase Leadership Skills for Personal Development, Laura Jerpi, para.5) Also, students that are more task oriented or who have better interpersonal skills tend to be healthier than an average human being. The Student-Athlete Leadership Team is a program that was designed in order to develop the leadership skills of our student-athletes and will be facilitated by North Atlanta High School’s own Andre Regan. The student-athletes are nominated by their respective head coaches, most of which are team captains. The basics of the Citizen Leader Framework are leading self, leading with others, and changing your world are the core of the leadership model created by Andre Regan and so many other coaches nationwide. Discussion topics will include accountability, self-awareness, resiliency, communication, collaboration, and empathy with and for teammates and coaches, in hopes that the Student-Athlete can help their team on and off the playing field.

I know from my time as a student-athlete, along with eleven years as a coach, that on game days I was a little bit edgy, tunnel-visioned, and ready to compete. As voted captain on Hampton-Dumont's athletic teams, I discovered the value of communication, unity, perseverance, and passion. Leaders are only successful if they have followers. I have come to know that every individual has a gift to contribute. Every role is vital. My teammates trust me because I value the individual and withhold judgement. I genuinely care about each and every girl, regardless of who she is or where she's come from. I seek and expect the best out of everyone, and when you do that, anything is possible. With this leadership style, each of our school athletic teams became cohesive and united. It became less about me and more about friends with true commitment to each other who focus on the big picture of teamwork.
Effective followership is an essential component of effective leadership in that, without good followers, the leader’s work is difficult and cumbersome. After undergoing a dramatic and angst-ridden season, the Victorian Korfball Senior Team is in need of significant transformation if there is any hope of fostering a high performance culture in the new season. Due to their history of conflict, the players in their present state lack any indications of cohesion. Selecting the right athletes for the new team will play a significant role in the baseline level of cohesion. Each of these areas can be addressed through a method of careful analysis via the Multidimensional Model of Leadership (Chelladurai & Saleh 1978), implementation of an appropriate intervention and the structuring of a consultative leadership environment.
