I am going to talk about how marriage and family concepts or relationship in Hinduism and Christianity are influenced by Laws of Manu and Writings of Martin Luther. Martin Luther, a German monk, priest and theologian, is a great reformer in western church history. He focused his study on the necessity for salvation and stated that the rightness of God is the strong faith believers have. His writings hold against the corruption of Catholicism and at the meantime, describe his perspective in the Radical Reformation. The masterpiece called the church to concentrate on the teachings of Bible itself.
Law of Manu, complied between 200-400C.E., gives particular descriptions and prescriptions of dharma. It includes the caste system in Hinduism, the four stages of life, the status of women in the society and so on. Because Law of Manu is one of the most important texts of all legal codes in Hinduism, every Brahman has the obligation to read it at least once in his or her lifetime. Instead of ordering readers to do things, Law of Manu serves as a simple instruction by offering possible actions to certain problems and their consequences.
Speaking of family and marriage, Law of Manu addresses the duties of husband and wife, the details of a marriage ceremony and the benefits when a proper marriage is conducted. As in Writings of Martin Luther, Luther stresses that marriage and family should be treated with respect and honor in the church and society which was against the common view
According to The First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, marriage and divorce are two concepts of life that are sentimental to the entire nature and progress of human life. Whereas in The Koran, marriage is something that is done for the fulfillment of what God intended for man to do in the world. In both religions, which is Christianity and Islam, marriage is an acceptance that has to be done, but under a will from the humanity. Both Christianity and Islam practice marriage as an ordained activity that has to be done to mark human progression, which is followed by the continuation of human life in the world, supported by the God’s plan of creation in the world. Both Christianity and Muslim observe the legal
He starts by characterizing marriage and family because of the breakdown of the societal ideas of both. At that point he identifies with the desperation of the issue by depicting the foundations of marriage and family as "under siege in our world today… our very civilization is in crisis" (p,15). This book will end up being an important asset for individual and gathering study, Christian guiding, and marriage and family courses.
The focus of this paper will be in the present time period of marriage between a man and a wife. The limitations of
Through this conflict, the world has and will continue to evolve into the modern community that we already have begun to live in today. This information is prevalent within the short story “Marriage is a Private Affair.” Although marriage has evolved a great amount in the past into what we know it as today, there are still civilizations that have stuck to their traditional beliefs and are looking to begin their own crusade as to what marriage beliefs should consist
considered him to be in direct communication with the Brahman. So completely had he turned within to realize the true Self that he never acknowledged any human presence, although admirers came from miles around to worship him and to lay before him their offerings of fruit and flowers, cotton cloth, and money (Maharaj, 2004: 14).
Marriage is seen as family affair, a partner is chosen by the partner’s family not based on a love connection. According to Abudabbeh (n.d.), “Although the woman’s opinion is supposed to be respected in accepting or rejecting a certain suitor, this is seldom practiced” (pg. 428). Unfortunately, women are shortchanged and often adhere to pre-Islamic attitudes toward the role that women play in society.
The Hindu’s view of sin is different to the Christian view in that “sin” is something done against oneself, not against God therefore the penalties for that “sin” are also against oneself. This is why the Hindu has to endure repeated cycle of rebirths until they reach that desired state and escape to Nirvana or oblivion. This is why they must work to be better in their current life to improve their position for the future life and more closely gain their oneness with Brahman.
Hinduism and Christianity are two religions that have been around for thousands of years. Both religions since creation has developed philosophies on certain subjects that can be compared and contrasted, to show the similarities and differences within Hinduism and Christianity. Key subjects that can be analyzed after reviewing the history and foundation of these religions are their: paths to enlightenment/salvation, the religions treatment of women, and the afterlife. This paper will give a thorough and concise analysis through discussion with the inclusion of comparing and contrasting embedded throughout this paper. One of the most important elements of
71% of Americans identify themselves as Christians (BBC). With nearly three quarters of Christians in America, it is no surprise the profound impact their religious views have on society. The views and beliefs of Christianity have played a tremendous role in influencing marital traditions and values held by the general population.
According to the Christian doctrine, reasons why people get married and traditional marriages are becoming diminished at a faster rate than ever as the culture changes. This is very true for contemporary culture, law, and society. A growing influence in secular ideologies and practice are undermining biblical standards in family relations and sexual morality. Marital unfaithfulness, spousal abuse, sex before marriage, cohabitation, pornography, and promiscuity; these among other liberated lifestyles of married couples are bringing down the intuition of marriage.
‘Hindu law’ was based largely on customary practices and relationships and formulated in a tribal society. It was more about maintaining peace between the tribes rather than protecting the rights of the individual. The acceptance of a monarchical system by these tribes introduced two new features. One, the political structure required by kingship encouraged an element of authoritarianism amongst the law makers. Secondly, the close association of kingship with divinity was projected into the realm of laws and provided a supernatural sanction for the laws whenever necessary. The status of the individual in society came to be conditioned by these new factors. On the other hand the Buddhist tradition originated at the time when the tribal loyalties were changing into territorial loyalty and there was a sharper awareness of political organisation. It had begun as one of a number of
The article I chose is about how marriage and religion can affect someone’s life. The article says that people with religious involvement often experience more positive outcomes when trying to recover from a health problem. Religious and married people tend to have a higher average longevity as well. These two factors also positively influence mental health. People associated with a religion tend to have higher self esteem, less anxiety and less chance of drug and alcohol abuse than someone who is not actively participating in a religion. Economic well being also sees a positive correlation.
The Code of Manu was one of the laws written for Hindus; they believe it enabled them to reach their dharma. In this book of order, it describes laws in which men and women must follow in Indian society. For example, in the Code of Manu it says, “A Brahmana who takes a Sudra wife to his bed, will (after death) sink into hell; if he begets a child by her, he will lose the rank of a Brahmana” . This law infers that if a Brahmin (the highest in the caste system) has a relationship with a Sudra wife (the lowest in the caste system) then he will not have dharma
moods so they can adjust and get used to them. To help this even more,
