It is important to see both the positive and negative viewpoints, because homework is something that every student will have to deal with. It can be stressful with extracurricular activities and at some points may seem useless. However, homework is beneficial for understanding the material, and keeping kids out of trouble. Overall, I believe that even though homework may be excessive at some points, it can be extremely beneficial for the future.

Studies show homework barely makes a difference. Kids claim homework is useless to them, and they might be right. Homework can be hard for kids and when they have trouble then it is harder for them to understand what the instructions are. Kids also get worried when they forget their homework. I think you should be able to turn in homework a day early or a day late. Most importantly kids do not perform better by a lot when they do homework. I think kids should have no homework.

Students feel more stressed and turned off to learning, which is, a lifelong pursuit when it comes to homework. Too much homework does nothing but add stress to parents and also to the student. As a kid in elementary school your brain is developing and starting to learn all new types of things. Homework does fall into the category of things kids are learning. “A 2007 MetLife study found that 45 percent of students 3 to 12 spend more than a hour a night doing homework.” As an elementary student you should not be spending an hour a night on homework.

A study by the American Journal of Family Therapy speaks to this issue. In the study, it was found that children in first to sixth grade are assigned three times as much homework as recommended by the National Education Association. According to another study, an overabundance of homework has been found to not only be unnecessary, but also correlate with negative non-academic effects in students attending high school. These effects can range anywhere from psychiatric issues such as depression to physical health issues such as ulcers, migraines, sleep deprivation and weight loss (Galloway et al.).

Researcher Kirsten Weir of the American Psychological Association speaks to the drawbacks of mass quantities of homework saying, “...kids don't absorb much useful information, Cooper says. In fact, too much homework can do more harm than good. Researchers have cited drawbacks, including boredom and burnout toward academic material, less time for family and extracurricular activities, lack of sleep and increased stress”(Kirsten Weir). Due to lack of time, it is not unusual for students to go from one subject to the next, when having so much work to complete. This being said, the more time an energy that students put forth on assignments the less sleep they are able to get in return resulting in less time and energy throughout each of their classes. This being said it is more than easy to loose focus on the true point of homework, to reinforce learning, and instead work to get it all finished even if it is not to the best

I remember back in fifth grade, I had this ultimate child-daddy conversation. This conversation always went as follows, "Dad I am tired of doing homework", he then would say, "Now hard work never killed anyone", then I would say, "I know, but I don't want to be the first!". It was not until later, in my high-school years when I realized that homework is about personal advancement, not only in terms of being a student, but as being an individual transitioning from childhood to adulthood. Homework aids in that transition by reinforcing an individual to develop a strong mentality, and establish relations towards preparation for the "real-world".

A standard researcher found that students in high-achieving communities who spend too much time on homework experience more stress, physical health problems, a lack of balance and even alienation from society. More than an hour of homework a night may be counterproductive, according to the study. The researchers asked students whether they experienced physical symptoms of stress, such as headaches, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, weight loss, and stomach problems. More than 80 percent of students reported having at least one stress-related symptom in the past month, and 44 percent said they had experienced three or more symptoms. The researchers also found that spending too much time on homework meant that students were not meeting their developmental needs or cultivating other critical life skills. Students were more likely to forgo activities, stop seeing friends or family, and not participate in hobbies.Many students felt forced or obligated to choose homework over developing other talents or skills.

But for good reason. Homework takes away time from more important things, causes pressure, --heck, it causes suicides!-- it is unfair, and most importantly, it doesn’t help. Honestly, teachers, you have a choice; you can either have us be completely focused on homework and grades, missing out on a better life, or we can live a more healthy lifestyle, during which we can learn from experience, not textbooks, and maybe have a chance to make some changes in the world. It is time to decide.
