Transition To Homework

I remember back in fifth grade, I had this ultimate child-daddy conversation. This conversation always went as follows, "Dad I am tired of doing homework", he then would say, "Now hard work never killed anyone", then I would say, "I know, but I don't want to be the first!". It was not until later, in my high-school years when I realized that homework is about personal advancement, not only in terms of being a student, but as being an individual transitioning from childhood to adulthood. Homework aids in that transition by reinforcing an individual to develop a strong mentality, and establish relations towards preparation for the "real-world". On top of that, it enriches feelings of accomplishment. As a young child with caring parents, my parents had me take initial burdens that I still have till this day. These burdens include, understanding the homework assignment(s) before leaving school, taking home all necessary materials to complete assignment(s), scheduling and organizing time for homework that is compatible with me after-school activities, completing and returning homework on time, conferring with teachers regarding homework concerns, recording assignments in an agenda, and last but not least collecting and turning in all work missed during absence of school. Not taking these burdens in mind would result in serious consequences. These serious consequences accumulated as I grew older and older. It encourages students to work together on assignments or projects, and to motivate and learn from each other. Homework achieves many co-operative learning activities that introduce many life skills through team-work. The fact that students in these types of activities share a common goal allows them to trust each other as they achieve more than would be possible on their own by combining their efforts. During the process of achieving these tasks, they manage to work their leadership skills, communication skills, conflict management skills, and their decision making skills. Dividing out the tasks involved, providing support and ensuring that individuals are meeting their goals are all examples of leadership skills that can be interpreted. When students learn to talk with each other in a positive manner, and actively listen to their team mates, that is considered effective use of communication skills. Conflicts often emerge during group work. The way students handle these conflicts and come up with a resolution is an adequate application of conflict management skills. Group work assignments, even though they are called "group", they require each student to have their own responsibilities.
