How Babies Talk is a book written by Roberta Michnick Golinkoff and Kathy Hirsh-Pasek. The book discusses how babies acquire language throughout various stages (The first three years of life) of their infant life. The chapter I chose to elaborate on was chapter 7, which outlines language and grammar between the ages of twenty-four to thirty-six months.

Speech , language and communication are closely tied to other areas of development, this learning outcome requires you to understand and be able to explain links between speech and development and the likely impact of any difficulties that children may have in acquiring speech, communication and language.

It is believed that babies develop language when they are in the utero and it continues throughout their lifetime. By twelve weeks old, babies may register the sounds they can hear and at the same time make basic visual, auditory and tactile mind maps (Karen Kearns, 2013, P.105). This allows the infant to turn towards any familiar sounds and noises. Babies begin to communicate with people around them quite quickly. By two months old, babies begin to make ‘cooing’ and other noises; this indicates the phonological component of language development. By six to nine months babies begin to experience with a mixture of sounds, and often you will hear a baby babbling. At the age of 6-11 months babies begin to babble such things such as mama. Babies at this age often try to communicate by actions or gestures and tries to repeat simple sounds that are used a lot around them.

The skills needed to communicate with children are active listening; give clear messages, understanding the reply by giving appropriate feedback and being able to pitch to the correct level. Giving clear messages is important so the child knows exactly what is required of them. If you give an instruction in a jovial manner the child or young person may not be fully sure what to do. This may unsettle the child worrying whether you really meant the instruction or if they don't do the required task they maybe chastised. Being able to pitch to the correct level is probably one of the most important skills needed to communicate. If you use jargon, acronyms, sarcasm and innuendos the recipient will not understand, possibly switch off to what is being said and the instruction will not be followed. If you use vocabulary

Communication development 0-3 years listening to parents and practitioner and starting to recognise their name by 1 and half they should be able to say mama dada ect and start to join in with rhymes such as twinkle twinkle little star. At the age of 3 they should be able to say at least 200 words. If the child has a speech problem then we use 100 words pictures and sign language to see what they know.

Explain how people from different backgrounds may use and/or interpret communication methods in different ways

With children langue needs to be age appropriate so your language will need to be simpler and you need to be very clear and concise about what you are saying. You may also have to give more reassurance to build their confidence. Body language may also have to be more exaggerate as children may not pick up on subtler signs. Also you may have to use more physical contact with children especially the very young.

When dealing with children, parents and educators usually have a hard time in understanding kids in order to help them follow guidelines. It is a great achievement to be able to adhere to children and keep them on the right path.
