Protecting and serving is the promise guaranteed by police officers, who put their lives in potential danger daily. Police officer’s right to use lethal force is being questioned due to a current bad reputation. A few negative cases should not triumph the countless positive things that police officers do for their community. A police officer who cannot use lethal force cannot easily protect the public and themselves in a dangerous situation. Police officers deserve the right to use lethal force to protect themselves, maintain public safety, and for an intimidation effect. To protect themselves from harm, police officers should have the capability to use lethal force. In August 2015, Goforth, a police officer in Houston, Texas, was shot fifteen times in his back and head. At age forty-seven, while pumping gas, someone took his life because he was venerable (Associated Press). Moreover, if police officers did not have the option to use lethal force, it would result in more police injuries or deaths. This would cause a decline in police officers, which would leave society without anyone to enforce laws. Cases like the Michael Brown case do not depict all police officers. Regardless of if he shot too quickly, officer Darren Wilson helped police officers attain a bad reputation. Regardless of infamous cases, police officers do help their community and enforce laws. Furthermore, police officers save lives by utilizing lethal force to stop dangerous criminals from fleeing.
